Data from couples (n = 103) seeking artificial insemination with donor sperm because of poor sperm quality and a control group of couples treated by in-vitro fertilization due to female causes were analysed according to the occupations of the spouses. Comparison of occupational categories revealed a significant difference in the prevalence of agricultural occupation (11/103 vs. 1/103, p < 0.01) between the group with male factor infertility and the normospermic controls. These patients also reported more long-term exposure to several insecticides and other pesticides. These toxic chemicals pro

Eleven infertile men were treated with glutathione (600 mg/day IM) for 2 months. The patients were suffering from dyspermia associated with various andrological pathologies. Standard semen and computer analyses of sperm motility were carried out before treatment and after 30 and 60 days of therapy. Glutathione exerted significant effect on sperm motility patterns. Glutathione appears to have a therapeutic effect on some andrological pathologies causing male infertility.

During an 18-month period, 200 male infertility patients had scrotal sonography examination. Fifty-seven percent showed abnormal sonogram; such as epididymitis, epididymo-orchitis, orchitis, varicocele, spermatocele, epididymal cyst and undescended testis. Among all lesions, infection was the commonest finding. There was no obvious relation between oligospermic and azospermic patients with scrotal sonographic findings except for testicular atrophy, which was very common among azospermic patients. This study indicates the role of scrotal sonography in male infertility patients.

The clinical approach to male infertility involves uncertainties, and various circumstances must be considered: 1. If no pregnancy occurs in the case of a couple whose sexual relations are "normal" and regular, and who have used no form of contraceptive for one year, the evaluation must systematically include both the woman and the man. 2. In the case of a man wishes to know his capacity for procreating, what are the possibilities for improvement? 3. Are there ways of predicting male infertility? If there are, the socioprofessional and iatrogenic risks should be more fully investigated. 4. Wha

On the basis of systematic cytogenetic studies carried out with men undergoing examination for infertility in the couple, it is now estimated that the incidence of chromosome anomalies is about 5 per cent. This rate is much higher than that observed in the general population (0.7 per cent). Anomalies in the sex chromosomes are the most frequently observed since they represent approximately 4 per cent of the cases, and the analysis of the various types of mutation shows a distinct predominance of the 47 chromosome composition, XXY, which is related to Klinefelter's syndrome. Autosome anomalies

This month's Views and Reviews provided a detailed review of how the immune system plays a role in male fertility and infertility. The first article provided an elegant overview of the physiology of the blood-testis barrier and the pathophysiology of impairment. Lindenbaum et al examined the current state of evidence surrounding antisperm antibody testing and the role it plays in contemporary practice. Robertson and Sharkey described the role seminal plasma cytokines play in fertility and infertility, as well as the current state of testing. Campbell et al performed a systematic review and met

Men affected by substantial defects in spermatogenesis have previously been considered untreatable in nearly all cases. The advances of intracytoplasmic sperm injection and microdissection testicular sperm extraction brought the potential of treatment to a substantial proportion of men with severe infertility. Novel approaches for the restoration of stem cells within the testis that have severely impaired function, and enhancement of spermatogenesis are now being actively investigated. In this issue of Fertility & Sterility, we have three Views and Reviews on these topics, as well as the speci

The escalating prevalence of male reproductive disorders and associated infertility has become a pressing concern, necessitating heightened awareness due to its substantial socioeconomic and psychological impact. Research has elucidated the multifaceted etiology of male infertility, encompassing oxidative stress, inflammation, and lifestyle-related factors. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring non-flavonoid polyphenol, has garnered significant attention for its potential health benefits, particularly in mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation. However, the relationship between this compound

Infertility affects 8-12% of couples globally, and the male factor is a primary cause in ~50% of couples. Male infertility is a multifactorial reproductive disorder, which can be caused by paracrine and autocrine factors, hormones, genes, and epigenetic changes. Recent studies in rodents and most notably in humans using multiomics approach have yielded important insights into understanding the biology of spermatogenesis. Nonetheless, the etiology and pathogenesis of male infertility are still largely unknown. In this review, we summarized and critically evaluated findings based on the use of a

Male infertility is a multifactorial disorder that involves different physiopathological mechanisms and multiple genes. In this sense, we analyse the role of miRNAs in this pathology. Gene expression analysis can provide relevant information to detect biomarkers, signalling pathways, pathologic mechanisms, and potential therapeutic targets for the disease. In this review, we describe four miRNA microarrays related to patients who present infertility diseases, including azoospermia, asthenozoospermia, and oligoasthenozoospermic. We selected 13 miRNAs with altered expressions in testis tissue (h

Qualitative research methods represent a valuable tool for investigating the entirety of the experience of male infertility evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment. Qualitative research is rigorous and thorough and well adapted for studying the complex field of infertility and reproductive health. Knowledge gained from qualitative research methods can undoubtedly inform clinical practice and improve support for individuals and couples affected by male factor infertility.

Somatic health is associated with male infertility; potential links between infertility and health may arise from genetic, developmental, and lifestyle factors. Studies have explored possible connections between male infertility and oncologic, cardiovascular, metabolic, chronic, and autoimmune diseases. Male infertility also may be a predictor of hospitalization and mortality. Additional research is required to elucidate the mechanisms by which male infertility affects overall health.

BACKGROUND: Between 30% and 80% of patients with male infertility produce excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) in their ejaculate even though the cause of male infertility is unexplained in approximately half of cases. The strong connection between oxidative stress (OS) and male infertility has led recent investigators to propose the term "Male Oxidative Stress Infertility (MOSI)" to describe OS-associated male infertility.
METHODS: We searched the PubMed database for original and review articles to survey the effects of OS on male infertility, and then verified the effects and treatments.

Infertility is a widespread clinical problem affecting 8-12% of couples worldwide. Of these, about 30% are diagnosed with idiopathic infertility since no causative factor is found. Overall 40-50% of cases are due to male reproductive defects. Numerical or structural chromosome abnormalities have long been associated with male infertility. Monogenic mutations have only recently been addressed in the pathogenesis of this condition. Mutations of specific genes involved in meiosis, mitosis or spermiohistogenesis result in spermatogenic failure, leading to the following anomalies: insufficient (oli
