Empowering Trusted Messengers With Motivational Interviewing Skills: Improving Dissemination of Accurate Information to Communities.

BackgroundHistorical injustices, structural racism, and negative healthcare experiences contribute to Black and Brown communities' distrust of science. Bridging Research, Accurate Information, and Dialogue (BRAID) is a community engagement model that leverages trusted messengers to share accurate, co-created health and science messages to their community through their social networks. In our prior research, trusted messengers reported encountering resistance or "discord" when conveying information about controversial topics such as COVID-19 vaccines and the importance of diversity in clinical

A qualitative study of the multi-level influences on oral hygiene practices for young children in an Early Head Start program.

BACKGROUND: Individual child-level risk factors for Early Childhood Caries (ECC) have been studied, but broader family- and community-level influences on child oral hygiene behaviors are less well understood. This study explored multiple levels of influence on oral hygiene behaviors for young children in Early Head Start (EHS) to inform a future behavioral intervention targeting children from low-income families. METHODS: Twenty-four semi-structured interviews were conducted with mothers of children under 4 years old, enrolled in the home visitor (HV) component of one EHS program in Los Angel

Efficacy of the Flexible Lifestyles Empowering Change intervention on metabolic and psychosocial outcomes in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (FLEX): a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with type 1 diabetes commonly have poor glycaemic control. We aimed to test the efficacy of a newly developed adaptive behavioral intervention (Flexible Lifestyles Empowering Change; FLEX) on metabolic and psychosocial outcomes in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. METHODS: Young people (13-16 years, type 1 diabetes duration >1 year, HbA1c of 64-119 mmol/mol [8·0-13·0%], and without other serious medical conditions or pregnancy) from two clinical sites (Colorado and Ohio, USA) were eligible for enrolment. One caregiver was required to participate actively in the study.

Patient motivators of postoperative electronic patient-reported outcome symptom monitoring use in thoracic surgery patients: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) systems can be used to engage patients in remote symptom monitoring to support postoperative care. We interviewed thoracic surgery patients with ePRO experience to identify factors that influenced use of ePROs to report their symptoms post-discharge. METHOD: This qualitative study used semi-structured telephone interviews with adults who underwent major thoracic surgery at an academic medical center in North Carolina. Individuals who enrolled in symptom monitoring, completed at least one ePRO survey, and were reachable by phone for the in

Pilot Study of a Tailored Smoking Cessation Intervention for Individuals in Treatment for Opioid Dependence.

INTRODUCTION: Over 85% of opioid-dependent individuals in methadone treatment smoke cigarettes; however, smoking cessation interventions are minimally effective in this population. To better help opioid-dependent individuals quit smoking, we developed and pilot-tested an intervention, based in the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) model of behavior change, which could be tailored to address individual barriers to smoking cessation in this population. METHODS: We randomized participants (n = 83) in methadone treatment to the eight-session, IMB model-based, intervention plus nicoti

A Mobile Phone-Based Sexual and Reproductive Health Intervention for Female Sex Workers in Kenya: Development and Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) have high rates of both unintended pregnancy and HIV, but few health promotion interventions address their contraceptive needs or other sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) concerns. A broader approach integrates contraceptive promotion with HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention and management, alcohol awareness, gender-based violence and rights, and health care utilization. The Women's Health Intervention using SMS for Preventing Pregnancy (WHISPER) mobile phone intervention uses a participatory development approach and behav

Integrating the Common Elements Treatment Approach and motivational interviewing to improve HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis engagement among women who use drugs in Tanzania: protocol for a pilot randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Women who use drugs in Tanzania face a disproportionately high burden of HIV and mental health disorders. Despite the availability of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), uptake remains low, highlighting the need for integrated, scalable interventions that address co-occurring substance use and mental health challenges. Motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive-behavioural approaches, such as the Common Elements Treatment Approach (CETA), show promise for enhancing HIV prevention outcomes in this population. This study presents the protocol for a pilot feasibility trial assessing

Self-care for head and neck cancer survivors with lymphedema and fibrosis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients are at high risk for developing lymphedema and fibrosis (LEF) following cancer treatment. Once HNC patients develop LEF, they need to conduct life-long self-care to slow LEF progression and reduce associated symptom burden and functional deficits. Data demonstrate that inadequate LEF self-care may be a potentially remediable issue. The objective of this study is to explore the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of an Information-Motivation-Behavioral (IMB) Skills model-driven self-care program (SCP) to improve LEF management and reduce LEF-rela

Differences and commonalities in barriers and facilitators experienced by participants enrolled in an online behavioral weight management program: A qualitative comparison.

Online behavioral weight management programs offer a scalable solution to address overweight and obesity but often face high dropout rates and variable success. Understanding the barriers and facilitators experienced by participants who achieve weight loss targets versus those who do not is critical for optimizing programs. This study compared the barriers and facilitators reported by participants achieving ≥5% weight loss with those achieving <5%, using a social-ecological framework to capture influences across individual, interpersonal, and environmental levels. The framework was chosen to r

TRAQ in clinical practice: A narrative review for health care transition readiness.

BACKGROUND: Advances in medical care have dramatically improved survival rates for children and youth with special health care needs (SHCN), with more than 90% now reaching adulthood. As a result, pediatric-to-adult health care transition has become a critical component of lifespan care. Despite national consensus recommendations, fewer than one in four adolescents receive the transition services needed to prepare them for adult-oriented care. Standardized, validated instruments to assess and promote transition readiness are essential to close this gap. OBJECTIVE: This review describes the pr

The mediating effect of coping styles between emergency capacity and mental workload among clinical nurses: A cross-sectional study.

AIMS: This study aimed to examine the relationship between emergency capacity, coping styles, and mental workload among nurses. BACKGROUND: Emergency capacity, coping styles, and mental workload are all variables associated with work. Identifying the relationship between these variables can facilitate administrators to implement tailored and effective intervention strategies to improve individual performance, quality of care, and medical safety. METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional study was carried out to investigate 605 Chinese clinical nurses in seven tertiary hospitals by using person

Barriers and enablers to the implementation of a perinatal care bundle: the Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth project.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth is one of the most significant causes of child mortality and morbidity internationally. Although we have seen an overall reduction in neonatal mortality since 1990 there remains significant variation across the world. PERIPrem, is a care bundle that brings together 11 low-cost best-practice interventions for mothers and preterm babies. Through a structured and supportive implementation approach, using primarily Quality Improvement (QI) methodology, implementation of these evidence-based interventions has increased but remains varied across participating sites. Navigating sexuality information: A comparative study on the actual and preferred sources by young people in Uganda's island communities.

BACKGROUND: Young people's access to sexuality information plays a central role in shaping sexual behaviour. Sexuality information comes from various sources, yet young people often lack access to their preferred and trusted sources. This paper examined the gap between actual and preferred sources of sexuality information, critical for inclusive and responsive interventions in the underserved, yet high-risk settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study, guided by the Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) and bioecological models, was conducted among young people aged 10-24

Consumer Co-Design of an Online Resource to Build Communication Skills of Health Consumers: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Information provided by health professionals can be complex and is often not well understood by health care consumers, leading to adverse outcomes. Clinician-led communication approaches such as "teach-back" can improve consumer understanding, yet are infrequently used by clinicians. A possible solution is to build consumers' skills to proactively check their understanding rather than waiting for the clinician to do so; however, there are few educational resources to support consumers in building these skills. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to co-design a web-based learning resource

Just-in-Time Adaptive Intervention to Improve HIV Prevention and Substance Use in Youth Experiencing Homelessness (MY-RIDE): Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Youth who are experiencing homelessness face a higher risk of HIV infection compared to their housed peers, and suicide and overdose remain the leading causes of death among homeless youth. Just-in-Time Adaptive Interventions (JITAIs) are gaining momentum for HIV prevention and substance use research. Yet, most interventions for homeless youth have not addressed modifiable real-time factors. OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the development and implementation of a randomized attention-controlled trial to assess the efficacy of motivating youth to reduce infections, disconnections, a

Predicting patient outcomes from initial in-session interactions within cognitive behavioral therapy and person-centered experiential therapy for severe depression.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and person-centered experiential therapy (PCET) are the most frequently delivered individual psychological therapies in the UK National Health Service Talking Therapies program. However, many patients do not benefit from treatment and motivational processes early in therapy may influence outcomes. This study assessed specific, in-session interaction-types at the first session of CBT and PCET for severe depression that may predict therapeutic outcomes. METHOD: Trained raters assessed active engagement in specific interactions from 103 first session

A Peer Support Specialist-Delivered Sexual and Intimate Partner Violence Prevention Program for Women in Substance Use Treatment: Protocol for a Single-Arm Trial.

BACKGROUND: Women in substance use treatment are disproportionately affected by violence. Both a history of violence and substance use place women at risk for cumulative exposure to violence and adverse outcomes, including mental and physical health problems. Interventions are urgently needed to reduce these health disparities by preventing initial and repeated exposure to sexual and intimate partner violence among women with substance use disorders (SUDs). The Healthy Relationships and Interpersonal Violence Education (THRIVE) program adapts evidence-based strategies for this population and i
