Analysis of ingredient and nutritional labeling of commercially available gluten-free bread in Brazil.

This study aimed at evaluating the ingredients and nutritional information of commercially-available gluten-free bread (GFB) in Brazil. A total of 128 products were studied, of which 87% presented the sandwich loaf shape. Traditional GFBs (n = 114) had as main ingredient the refined rice flour and starches, whereas alternative ones (n = 14) presented whole rice flour. Raw materials suggested by science to improve nutrients and bioactive compounds of gluten-free foodstuffs were observed in the ingredient list of most products (n = 86); however, they were used in lower levels, thus no significan

On genies and bottles: scientists' moral responsibility and dangerous technology R&D.

The age-old maxim of scientists whose work has resulted in deadly or dangerous technologies is: scientists are not to blame, but rather technologists and politicians must be morally culpable for the uses of science. As new technologies threaten not just populations but species and biospheres, scientists should reassess their moral culpability when researching fields whose impact may be catastrophic. Looking at real-world examples such as smallpox research and the Australian "mousepox trick", and considering fictional or future technologies like Kurt Vonnegut's "ice-nine" from Cat's Cradle, and

Acupuncture for symptomatic rotator cuff disease: Protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff disease (RCD) consists of subacromial impingement syndrome, rotator cuff tendinopathy or tendinitis, partial or full rotator cuff tear, calcific tendinitis, and subacromial bursitis. Acupuncture has been suggested as a meaningful nonsurgical intervention for managing shoulder pain and dysfunction. However, previous reviews have not completely addressed the role of acupuncture in the management of RCDs. The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for managing symptoms in patients with RCD. METHODS: We will search t

The Use of Narrative in Science and Health Communication: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Many people deny science and reject health recommendations despite widely distributed facts and statistics. Didactic science and health communication is often dry, and relies on the false assumption that people make purely evidence-based decisions. Stories can be a powerful teaching tool by capturing attention and evoking emotion. OBJECTIVE: We explore the impact and appeal of, and describe best practices for, using narrative (storytelling) versus didactic methods in science and health communication. PATIENT INVOLVEMENT: No patients were involved in the review process. METHODS:

Effects of Astrobiology Lectures on Knowledge and Attitudes about Science in Incarcerated Populations.

The incarcerated population has little or no access to science education programs, STEM resources, or scientists. We explored the effects of a low-cost, potentially high-impact informal science education program that enabled NASA scientists to provide astrobiology lectures to adults inside 16 correctional institutions in three states. Post- versus pre-lecture surveys suggest that presentations significantly increased science content knowledge, positively shifted attitudes about science and scientists, increased a sense of science self-identity, and enhanced behavioral intentions about communic

[The Frontal Lobe and Top-down Control of Attention].

The concept of attention in cognitive science encompasses a bidirectional nature: bottom-up attention based on the salience of sensory stimuli, and top-down attention, which involves voluntary control over aspects such as intensity, allocation, selectivity, and duration. Top-down attention is believed to be primarily realized through the frontal lobes that monitor on-going information processing. This monitoring helps detect situations requiring intervention and manipulates lower-level information processing systems as a part of executive functions.

The value of program science to optimize knowledge brokering on infectious diseases for public health.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge translation (KT) and related terms have variously been defined as process and as products. In this paper we contribute to debates on effective KT, specifically knowledge brokering, by describing an adaptation of Program Science that aligns with the real-world of public health activities. We describe an adaptation of the Program Science framework to our knowledge translation and brokering planning and projects at the National Collaborating Centre for Infectious Diseases. The systematic approach allows for layering of knowledge year to year and translating knowledge from on

Development of the InTelligence And Machine LEarning (TAME) Toolkit for Introductory Data Science, Chemical-Biological Analyses, Predictive Modeling, and Database Mining for Environmental Health Research.

Research in environmental health is becoming increasingly reliant upon data science and computational methods that can more efficiently extract information from complex datasets. Data science and computational methods can be leveraged to better identify relationships between exposures to stressors in the environment and human disease outcomes, representing critical information needed to protect and improve global public health. Still, there remains a critical gap surrounding the training of researchers on these in silico methods. We aimed to address this gap by developing the inTelligence And

Standards for vision science librarians: 2026 review and revisions.

The Association of Vision Science Librarians (AVSL) is an international organization composed of professional librarians, or persons acting in that capacity, whose collections include vision-related materials and/or whose patrons include vision scientists. Since 1976, AVSL has defined standards for vision science libraries in all capacities, including optometry, ophthalmology, academia, industry, and beyond. As the most recent Standards for Vision Science Libraries was published in 2014, an AVSL member committee was formed in 2024 to review the Standards and consider what a revision should inc

Factors associated with access channels and satisfaction with health science popularization among health lifestyle instructors.

BACKGROUND: Health Lifestyle Instructors (HLIs) play a pivotal role in community health promotion. The quality of and satisfaction with their own access to health science information may directly influence their work effectiveness, which in turn affect residents' health literacy and the outcomes of chronic disease prevention and control. This cross-sectional questionnaire-based study aimed to (1) explore factors associated with satisfaction with access channels for health science popularization among HLIs and (2) examine whether self-rated health status statistically mediated the association b

The journalist's role in bioethics.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, emerging advances in the biomedical sciences raised insufficiently noticed ethical issues, prompting science reporters to serve as a sort of Early Warning System. As awareness of bioethical issues increased rapidly everywhere, and bioethics itself arrived as a recognized discipline, the need for this early-warning press role has clearly diminished. A secondary but important role for the science journalist is that of investigative reporter/whistleblower, as in the Tuskegee syphilis trials and the government's secret plutonium experiments. Because the general p

A tiered assessment framework for interregional flows of ecosystem services from migratory species.

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has called for assessments explicitly accounting for interregional flows of ecosystem services (ESs) across geographic scales. An important type of interregional ES flow is generated by the long-distance movements of migratory species. Many migratory species provide important benefits to people, and due to migration dynamics, ESs provided in one location may be affected by habitat conservation, or lack thereof, in other locations. The state of the science on interregional flows of ESs from migratory species, h

Clerkship faculty perspectives on basic science integration during clinical training: implications for fourth-year physiology elective development.

The shortened preclerkship phase in integrated medical curricula has raised concerns about whether medical students retain and apply foundational basic science knowledge during clerkship. Yet few studies incorporate perspectives of clerkship faculty, who directly observe students' mechanistic reasoning and are well positioned to inform curricular interventions for vertical integration. This mixed-method study addresses that gap by conducting a clerkship faculty-centered needs assessment evaluating basic science integration, students' preparedness, and priorities for physiology-focused elective

Evaluating online information on temporomandibular disorders: readability, reliability, content and quality: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a prevalent group of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint, associated structures and masticatory muscles. The internet has become a primary source of health information for many patients; however, the readability, reliability, content and quality of online information on TMDs vary widely. A comprehensive synthesis of the characteristics and evaluation methods of such content is currently lacking. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This scoping review will follow the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and be reported in accor

Exceptionally Long Lifetimes of Strongly Entangled Acyl-Trityl Radical Pairs Photochemically Generated in Crystalline Trityl Ketones.

Triplet acyl-alkyl radical pairs generated by pulsed laser excitation within the constraints of their nanocrystalline ketone precursors were recently introduced as a potential platform for the robust and repeated instantiation of spin qubit pairs for applications in quantum information science. Here, we report the transient spectroscopy of a series of nanocrystalline trityl-alkyl and trityl-aryl ketones capable of generating correlated triplet radical pairs with persistent triphenylmethyl radicals forced to remain within bonding distances of highly reactive acyl radicals. Whereas triplet trity
