Harnessing digital health data for person-centred HIV prevention monitoring: a survey of national health information systems.

INTRODUCTION: Measuring HIV prevention impact is challenging because prevention is started and stopped as needed, and individual-level data availability has been suboptimal or not collected. WHO's 2022 Consolidated guidelines on person-centred HIV strategic information aim to bridge this gap by recommending a minimum dataset for HIV prevention monitoring. METHODS: We surveyed the availability of 42 HIV prevention data elements collected on an individual from WHO's recommended minimum dataset in 21 countries' national health information systems during a Prevention Outcome Monitoring Workshop h

Specialty Care Oases: Utilizing Geographic Information Systems to Evaluate Specialty Care Access for Individuals With Down Syndrome.

Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition occurring in about 220,000 individuals in the United States. Previous research showed almost 1 in 5 individuals with Down syndrome in the U.S. face significant geographic obstacles to receiving specialty care. The purpose of this study was to extend this work and learn more about socioeconomic barriers to Down syndrome specialty clinics. We quantified the percentage of the general population in each U.S. state living within a 2-hour drive of a Down syndrome specialty care clinic. We created a Down Syndrome Specialty Care Access Score to quantify access

Mapping Eastern (EEE) and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitides (VEE) among Equines Using Geographical Information Systems, Colombia, 2008-2019.

INTRODUCTION: Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) viruses are zoonotic pathogens affecting humans, particularly equines. These neuroarboviruses compromise the central nervous system and can be fatal in different hosts. Both have significantly influenced Colombia; however, few studies analyse its behaviour, and none develop maps using geographic information systems to characterise it. OBJECTIVE: To describe the temporal-spatial distribution of those viruses in Colombia between 2008 and 2019. METHODS: Retrospective cross-sectional descriptiv

Insights from a Systematic Search for Information on Designs, Costs, and Effectiveness of Poliovirus Environmental Surveillance Systems.

Poliovirus surveillance plays a critical role in achieving and certifying eradication and will play a key role in the polio endgame. Environmental surveillance can provide an opportunity to detect circulating polioviruses prior to the observation of any acute flaccid paralysis cases. We completed a systematic review of peer-reviewed publications on environmental surveillance for polio including the search terms "environmental surveillance" or "sewage," and "polio," "poliovirus," or "poliomyelitis," and compared characteristics of the resulting studies. The review included 146 studies represent

Measuring community integration using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and participatory mapping for people who were once homeless.

Measures of community integration rely on self-report assessments that often quantify physical or social participation, but fail to capture the individual׳s spatial presence in the community. The current study documents the activity space, or area of daily experiences, of 37 individuals who were once homeless through participatory mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Contrary to expectations, there was no significant relationship between activity space size and community integration measures, except a negative association with physical integration. Further analysis revealed, howev

Essential elements of strategic information systems to guide focused HIV responses in south and south-east Asia.

Strategic information is fundamental to the formulation and delivery of effective HIV programmes, but generating that information is a complex process, for which most countries in south and south-east Asia lack capacity and supporting structures. Although most countries in this region have made tremendous strides in collecting relevant data, advances in the ability to translate that data into strategic information and evidence for action, have not kept pace. To overcome these shortcomings, this paper presents a comprehensive approach to collecting strategic information and building the capacit

Integrative literature review: a review of literature related to geographical information systems, healthcare access, and health outcomes.

Differences in access to healthcare services and the resulting adverse health outcomes are major public health priorities. The Institute of Medicine and the Department of Health and Human Services have identified the need for strategies to improve access to healthcare services and to support the improvement of health outcomes. The literature documents health disparities associated with healthcare access and health outcomes from a geographic perspective. Place of residence, location of healthcare services, and geography in general are important factors in the analysis of health. Geographical in

Use of the vector index and geographic information system to prospectively inform West Nile virus interventions.

We sought to estimate West Nile virus (WNV) activity in mosquito populations weekly at the census tract level in Chicago, IL, and to provide this information graphically. Each week we calculated a vector index (VI) for each mosquito trap then generated tract estimates using geographic information systems. During June 29-September 13, 2008, a median of 527 (60%) of 874 possible tracts per week had a VI value. Overall, 94% of the weekly VI tract estimates were 0; among those with a VI estimate greater than 0, the median was 0.33 (range 0.003-3.5). Officials deemed risk levels and weather conditi

Information-Theoretic Channel Selection and Spatiotemporal Deep Learning for Early Fault Detection in Microsatellite Thermal Control Systems.

Early fault detection in microsatellite thermal control systems (TCS) faces fundamental challenges: high-dimensional redundant telemetry channels, overlapping multi-scale periodicities that obscure anomaly signatures, and severely limited daily data downlink (1-2 passes per day) that restricts the temporal window for diagnosis. Existing data-driven approaches either rely on supervised learning, requiring labeled fault data that are scarce in practice, or employ univariate analysis that fails to capture inter-sensor spatial correlations. To address these limitations, this paper introduces a hyb

Leveraging Laboratory Information Management Systems to Support HIV and Other Infectious Diseases Testing in PEPFAR-Supported Countries.

Laboratory information management systems (LIMSs) are an important tool for public health laboratory operations and serve the data needs of public health programs. A comprehensive and interoperable LIMS allows laboratory staff to ensure quality management of laboratory operations. It also provides timely client care through direct access to diagnostic data and tracks important public health trends. Here, we describe the implementation and adaptation of HIV-related LIMSs in 3 countries supported by PEPFAR (President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief)-namely, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe-to suppo

Building consensus on common features and interoperability use cases for community health information systems: a Delphi study.

INTRODUCTION: Information systems for community health have become increasingly sophisticated and evidence-based in the last decade and they are now the most widely used health information systems in many low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to establish consensus regarding key features and interoperability priorities for community health information systems (CHISs). METHODS: A Delphi study was conducted among a systematically selected panel of CHIS experts. This impressive pool of experts represented a range of leading global health institutions, with gender and regional

From disease- to people-centred pandemic management: organized communities, community-oriented primary care and health information systems.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the health equity gap between and within countries. Western countries were the first to receive vaccines and mortality was higher among socially deprived, minority and indigenous populations. Surprisingly, many sub-Saharan countries reported low excess mortalities. These countries share experiences with community organization and participation in health. The aim of this article was to analyse if and how this central role of people can promote a successful pandemic response. METHODS: This analysis was partly based on local and national experiences shar

Immunity to poliovirus in Afghanistan: A household sampling method for serological assessment based on geographical information systems.

Afghanistan continues to experience challenges affecting polio eradication. Mass polio vaccination campaigns, which aim to protect children under the age of 5, are a key eradication strategy. To date, the polio program in Afghanistan has only employed facility-based seroprevalence surveys, which can be subject to sampling bias. We describe the feasibility in implementing a cross-sectional household poliovirus seroprevalence survey based on geographical information systems (GIS) in three districts. Digital maps with randomly selected predetermined starting points were provided to teams, with a

Examining Environmental Predictors of Community Participation for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

A geographic information system (GIS) approach systematically assessed whether population density and distribution of community resources contributed to caregiver reported community participation outcomes for 124 adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Regression analyses examined whether GIS measures predicted community participation in areas of social activities and use of services, while also accounting for adult age, conversation ability, and daily living skills (DLS). Results indicated that in addition to person factors of greater DLS and better conversation ability, access to specifi

Syndromic surveillance using monthly aggregate health systems information data: methods with application to COVID-19 in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of SARS-CoV-2 circulation is imperative to inform local public health response. However, it has been hindered by limited access to SARS-CoV-2 diagnostic tests and testing infrastructure. In regions with limited testing capacity, routinely collected health data might be leveraged to identify geographical locales experiencing higher than expected rates of COVID-19-associated symptoms for more specific testing activities. METHODS: We developed syndromic surveillance tools to analyse aggregated health facility data on COVID-19-related indicators in seven low- and middl

Monitoring vaccine safety using the vaccine safety Datalink: Assessing capacity to integrate data from Immunization Information systems.

BACKGROUND: The Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) uses vaccination data from electronic health records (EHR) at eight integrated health systems to monitor vaccine safety. Accurate capture of data from vaccines administered outside of the health system is critical for vaccine safety research, especially for COVID-19 vaccines, where many are administered in non-traditional settings. However, timely access and inclusion of data from Immunization Information Systems (IIS) into VSD safety assessments is not well understood. METHODS: We surveyed the eight data-contributing VSD sites to assess: 1) statu
