[Huge glass foreign body penetrating into the infratemporal fossa through the maxillary sinus:a case report].

We report a rare case of glass foreign body penetrating into the infratemporal fossa through the maxillary sinus. The patient felt a little difficulty to open mouth. Both CT and DSA are helpful in diagnosis and treatment. It was important to keep the foreign body stability and integrity, through the modified Weber incision around the original traumatic wound and removal of anterior wall of the maxillary sinus around the foreign body.

Combined cranionasal surgery for spheno-orbital meningiomas invading the paranasal sinuses, pterygopalatine, and infratemporal fossa.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of combining an endonasal endoscopic skull-base approach and repair with a transcranial orbitozygomatic approach for spheno-orbital meningiomas (SOMs). METHODS: Three patients with recurrent SOMs underwent combined orbitozygomatic and endonasal endoscopic surgery. In 2 patients both procedures were done in 1 operation and in 1 patient the endonasal surgery was done 2.5 months after the craniotomy. Extent of resection, complications, morbidity, and mortality were evaluated. RESULTS: Gross total resection was achieved in 1 patient and near total resection in

Preauricular Approach for Removal of a Displaced Dental Implant From the Infratemporal Fossa: A Case Report.

The placement of pterygoid implants offers a viable solution for the rehabilitation of the atrophic posterior maxilla. A 76-year-old female patient was referred to our hospital. She suffered from facial swelling and pain caused by pterygoid implant displacement. The implant migrated into the right infratemporal fossa during an immediate loading procedure. Imaging studies, including cone-beam computed tomography, confirmed the ectopic position of the implant. The implant was successfully retrieved via a preauricular approach under general anesthesia. The postoperative course was uneventful, wit

Granulomatous Mucormycosis of the Temporal Bone extending Into Temporomandibular Joint and Infratemporal Fossa: A Case Report.

Mucormycosis of temporal bone is extremely rare. They are usually associated with host immunodeficiency, are difficult to diagnose, and many cases are fatal. We performed a literature review and found only 10 reported cases of temporal bone mucormycosis. We present a case of temporal bone mucormycosis involving the temporomandibular joint and infratemporal fossa in a 53-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus who presented with unbearable otalgia. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrate inhomogeneous density mass in the parapharyngeal and retropharyngeal space accompanied

Leiomyosarcoma of the infratemporal fossa with perineurial spread along the right mandibular nerve: a case report.

Leiomyosarcomas are malignant tumors displaying strong smooth muscle differentiation. They can often develop within the GI tract and myometrium, but are particularly rare in the head and neck. Perineurial spread of head and neck cancer is observed in patients with neoplasms of the skin (squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma) or skin appendages (adenoid cystic carcinoma). We report the case of a woman who presented with diplopia and headaches. MRI showed an infratemporal mass lesion and faint enhancement tracking along the mandibular nerve into the wall of the right cavernous sinus. A nerve biopsy

The intranasal endoscopic removal of schwannoma of the pterygopalatine and infratemporal fossae via the prelacrimal recess approach.

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to analyze the results of a novel surgical method-the endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach (PLRA)-in patients with tumors involving the pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) and infratemporal fossa (ITF). The surgical technique and indications for this approach are also discussed. METHODS: The authors analyzed data from 7 cases involving patients who underwent resection of PPF and ITF tumors by means of the endoscopic PLRA from 2004 to 2013. Preoperative and postoperative imaging studies were available in all cases and were reviewed. The surgical specimens were al

[Combined paralateronasal and cervical approaches for malignant maxillo-mandibular tumors extending to the infratemporal fossa].

INTRODUCTION: The common anterior paralateronasal approach for malignant maxillo-mandibular tumors extending to the infratemporal fossa is usually difficult, insufficient, or even dangerous. TECHNICAL NOTE: We report a new approach for tumors extending to the infratemporal fossa. It combines a paralateronasal and a cervical approach indicated for tumors extending to the infratemporal fossa, requiring a total monoblock excision of the tumor with as little esthetic sequel as possible. DISCUSSION: The main interest of this technique is to offer a large exposure of the facial skeleton and the tu

Microanatomy and surgical approaches to the infratemporal fossa: an anaglyphic three-dimensional stereoscopic printing study.

OBJECTIVE: The infratemporal fossa (ITF) is a continuation of the temporal fossa between the internal surface of the zygoma and the external surface of the temporal bone and greater wing of the sphenoid bone that is sitting deep to the ramus of the mandible. The principal structure to understanding its relationships is the lateral pterygoid muscle. Other important structures are the medial pterygoid muscle, the maxillary artery, the pterygoid venous plexus, the otic ganglion, the chorda tympani nerve and the mandibular nerve. In this study, we describe the microsurgical anatomy of the ITF, as

Case Report: Giant communicating solitary fibrous tumor of the temporal skull base and infratemporal fossa.

BACKGROUND: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal spindle-cell neoplasm that can arise in the central nervous system and the head and neck region. Giant communicating lesions spanning the temporal skull base and infratemporal fossa are exceptionally uncommon and remain diagnostically and surgically challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 76-year-old man who presented with more than 3 years of intermittent headache and dizziness, recent symptom progression, and a palpable right maxillofacial mass. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a strongly enhancing right temporal skul

Expanded Endonasal Approach for Resection of Extradural Infratemporal Fossa Trigeminal Schwannoma: 2-Dimensional Operative Video.

The infratemporal fossa (ITF) is bounded superiorly by the skull base, specifically the greater wing of the sphenoid, which contains foramen ovale. It is bordered posteriorly by the temporal bone, including the petrous portion of the carotid canal, anteriorly by the posterior wall of the maxillary sinus, laterally by the mandible, and medially by the pterygoid body and lateral pterygoid plate.1-3 In this video, we report a case of a rare, exclusively extradural, schwannoma originating from the third division of the trigeminal nerve with a widened foramen ovale at the skull base. Anatomical variability of the lateral pterygoid plate and its influence on the dimensions of infratemporal fossa in human skulls.

The lateral pterygoid plate is a key landmark within the infratemporal fossa, and its morphological variations influence surgical access to the foramen ovale. This study evaluated the morphometry of lateral pterygoid plate and its spatial relationships in 60 dry skulls. The specimens of skull were categorized into direct, lateral, removed, and medial types. Measurements included five sectional breadths, height, distances from lateral to the medial pterygoid plate, the anterior tubercle, and degree of lateral deflection. The specimens of skull classified as medial type had significant greater m

Intramuscular lipoma of the temporalis muscle extending to the infratemporal fossa: surgical pitfalls and short literature review.

Lipomas are benign tumours of mesenchymal origin, representing one of the most common tumours of the body. They are often observed between the fourth and the sixth decade of life and in 13% of the cases they occur in the head and neck region. In case of symptoms, surgical removal is the treatment of choice; when the formation involves the temporal region, the surgical approach is often challenging due to the presence of the neurovascular structures, such as the temporalis branch of the facial nerve and their potential extension to the nearby structures under the zygomatic arch to either the in

Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery to Resect a Solitary Trigeminal Neurofibroma Involving the Infratemporal Fossa: A Case Report.

Trigeminal neurofibromas are rarely reported, and even rarer when involving the infratemporal fossa. We describe the case of a 58-year-old man incidentally found through magnetic resonance imaging to have a tumor situated mainly in the infratemporal fossa. The tumor derived from the third branch of the trigeminal nerve and was totally removed by endoscopic endonasal surgery. Final pathology confirmed a diagnosis of neurofibroma. The patient had no intraoperative or postoperative complications except for numbness of the face. During the 6 years of follow-up, there has been no tumor progress or

Retrieving a displaced third molar from the infratemporal fossa: case report of a minimally invasive procedure.

BACKGROUND: The appropriate management of postoperative complication of wisdom teeth removal is of utmost importance as it can result in legal procedures. The accidental displacement of a maxillary third molar in the infratemporal fossa (ITF), is a rare complication that can occur even with experienced surgeons. The numerous retrieval techniques reported are invasive and provide an unpredictable access. Our aim was to achieve the safe and swift retrieval of the tooth displaced to an area of such complex anatomy. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the case of a 17-year-old female patient whose rig
