Hepatic intra-arterial infusion of yttrium-90 microspheres in the treatment of recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma after liver transplantation: a case report.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurs with a reported frequency of 12%-18% after liver transplantation. Recurrence is associated with a mortality rate exceeding 75%. Approximately one-third of recurrences develop in the transplanted liver and are therefore amenable to local therapy. A variety of treatment modalities have been reported including resection, transarterial chemo-embolization (TACE), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), ethanol ablation, cryoablation, and external beam irradiation. Goals of treatment are tumor control and the minimization of toxic effect to functional parenchyma. Efficac

Clinical effects of intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy with cisplatin, mitomycin C, leucovorin and 5-flourouracil for unresectable advanced hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy (IAIC) can potentially improve survival in some patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but the ideal regimen is not yet established. We prospectively evaluated the effects of short-course continuous infusion with the combination of cisplatin, mitomycin C, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin for unresectable advanced HCC and analyzed their prognostic factors. METHODS: Patients with unresectable advanced HCC and not suitable for other therapy were enrolled. Cannulation via the left subclavian artery with the tip of catheter at the proper

[Hepatic intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy using polymer-coated 2.9 Fr implantable catheter-port system--initial experience].

We developed a new 2.9 Fr implantable catheter-port system (reservoir) to perform arterial infusion chemotherapy in patients with unresectable liver tumors. This study was undertaken to evaluate the feasibility of placing this new reservoir system in patients in whom placement of a 5 Fr-reservoir system would seem to be difficult because of severe stricture, tortuosity or angulation of the hepatic artery. A new reservoir system was successfully implanted in 25 patients during 27 sessions. After a side hole was opened, a 2.9 Fr catheter was inserted in the distal hepatic artery or in the gastro

Treatment with combined intra-arterial 5-FUdR infusion and whole-liver radiation for colon carcinoma metastatic to the liver. Preliminary results.

Twenty-eight patients with colon carcinoma metastatic to the liver were treated with continuously infused intra-arterial 5-fluorouracil deoxyriboside (5-FUdR) and cyclical whole-liver radiation (2000-3000 rad). Survivorship ranged from 25 days to almost 4 years and was a clear function of the extent of liver dysfunction at the time of initiation of this treatment. Difficulties in establishing the objective complete response rates in patients with minor imaging abnormalities were frequently noted. Both extracorporeal and permanently implanted arterial infusion devices have been employed, the re

Angiographic demonstration of neoangiogenesis after intra-arterial infusion of autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells in diabetic patients with critical limb ischemia.

Critical limb ischemia in diabetic patients is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Suboptimal responses to the available medical and surgical treatments are common in these patients, who also demonstrate limited vascular homeostasis. Neovasculogenesis induced by stem cell therapy could be a useful approach for these patients. Neovasculogenesis and clinical improvement were compared at baseline and at 3 and 12 months after autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cell (BMMNC) transplantation in diabetic patients with peripheral artery disease. We conducted a prospective stu

Safety and efficacy of selective and superselective intra-arterial cerebral infusion with blood-brain barrier disruption for glioma: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Selective and superselective intra-arterial cerebral infusion (SIACI/SSIACI) delivers chemotherapy directly to tumor-supplying arteries, achieving high local drug levels with reduced systemic toxicity. Often combined with blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBd) to enhance penetration, these methods have been widely studied, yet a comprehensive evidence synthesis is lacking. This study systematically assesses the safety and efficacy of intra-arterial chemotherapy with BBBd for glioma treatment. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science for studies on SIACI with BBBd in

New induction chemotherapy using intra-arterial infusion for tongue squamous cell carcinoma to avoid reconstructive surgery: A 6 case reports.

Most tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) classified as T3 require reconstructive surgery, which inevitably causes problems with oral functions. We propose new induction chemotherapy using intra-arterial infusion for TSCC classified as T3 to avoid reconstructive surgery. This chemotherapy regimen consists of intra-arterial infusion of docetaxel and cisplatin and systemic administration of 5-fluorouracil. As a result of this treatment, the therapeutic effect was a complete response in five patients and a partial response in one patient, and the overall response rate was 100%. All six patients

Development of a rabbit human glioblastoma model for testing of endovascular selective intra-arterial infusion (ESIA) of novel stem cell-based therapeutics.

BACKGROUND: Endovascular selective intra-arterial (ESIA) infusion of cellular oncotherapeutics is a rapidly evolving strategy for treating glioblastoma. Evaluation of ESIA infusion requires a unique animal model. Our goal was to create a rabbit human GBM model to test IA infusions of cellular therapies and to test its usefulness by employing clinical-grade microcatheters and infusion methods to deliver mesenchymal stem cells loaded with an oncolytic adenovirus, Delta-24-RGD (MSC-D24). METHODS: Rabbits were immunosuppressed with mycophenolate mofetil, dexamethasone, and tacrolimus. They underw

Proton beam therapy combined with retrograde intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy for an extremely rapid growing recurrent ameloblastic carcinoma: A case report.

Ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) is a very rare malignant odontogenic tumor. Although surgical resection is generally performed, treatment approaches have not been established for recurrent cases. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy are positioned as adjunctive therapies, and few studies investigated definitive non-operative therapy. We present the case of a 71-year-old male with recurrent secondary-type AC arising from the right maxilla, who was treated with proton beam therapy (PBT; 71.4 Gy relative biological effectiveness in 32 fractions) combined with continuous intra-arterial infusion of cisplatin

Differential Clearance of Rat and Human Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells From the Brain After Intra-arterial Infusion in Rats.

Intra-arterial (IA) delivery of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) has shown potential as a minimally invasive therapeutic approach for stroke. The aim of the present study was to determine the whole-body biodistribution and clearance of technetium-99m ((99m)Tc)-labeled rat and human BM-MSCs after IA delivery in a rat model of transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). Our hypothesis was that xenotransplantation has a major impact on the behavior of cells. Male RccHan:Wistar rats were subjected to sham operation

Intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy utilizing cisplatin inhibits bladder cancer by decreasing the fibrocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cells in an m6A-dependent manner.

Intra-arterial infusion chemotherapy (IAIC), using immunomodulatory cisplatin, is a novel treatment for bladder cancer (BC) that allows the delivery of specific drugs to the local malignant lesion. To explore the immunomodulatory effect of cisplatin during IAIC, we detected the proportion of immunosuppressed cells in BC tissue from eight BC patients, with the reduction of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), more specifically fibrocytic-MDSCs (f-MDSCs). Further, we demonstrated that cisplatin inhibits their proliferation and immunosuppressive activity. f-MDSCs promote tumor proliferation a

Intra-arterial infusion of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells results in transient localization in the brain after cerebral ischemia in rats.

Cell therapies from various sources have been under intense research in stroke. Efficient homing of the cells to the injured brain without complications is necessary to realize the therapeutic potential of cell therapy. Intra-arterial (IA) infusion of cells bypasses the filtering organs and directs the cells to the target area more efficiently. Here we studied the biodistribution of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (BMMSCs) after a direct infusion into the external carotid artery (ECA) in rats. Cells, which were cultured without animal-derived agents and also treated wi
