The contribution of associated congenital anomalies in understanding Hirschsprung's disease.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a complex congenital disorder which, from a molecular perspective, appears to result due to disruption of normal signalling during development of enteric nerve cells, resulting in aganglionosis of the distal bowel. Associated congenital anomalies occur in at least 5-32% (mean 21%) of patients and certain syndromic phenotypes have been linked to distinct genetic sites, indicating underlying genetic associations of the disease and probable gene-gene interaction in its pathogenesis. Clear-cut associations with HSCR include Down's syndrome, dominant sensorineural d

Formation, structure, and function of extra-skeletal bones in mammals.

This review describes the formation, structure, and function of bony compartments in antlers, horns, ossicones, osteoderm and the os penis/os clitoris (collectively referred to herein as AHOOO structures) in extant mammals. AHOOOs are extra-skeletal bones that originate from subcutaneous (dermal) tissues in a wide variety of mammals, and this review elaborates on the co-development of the bone and skin in these structures. During foetal stages, primordial cells for the bony compartments arise in subcutaneous tissues. The epithelial-mesenchymal transition is assumed to play a key role in the di

Anaphylaxis.

Anaphylaxis is a systemic, life-threatening disorder triggered by mediators released by mast cells and basophils activated via allergic (IgE-mediated) or nonallergic (non-IgE-mediated) mechanisms. It is a rapidly evolving, multisystem process involving the integumentary, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and cardiovascular systems. Anaphylaxis and angioedema are serious disorders that can lead to fatal airway obstruction and culminate in cardiorespiratory arrest, resulting in hypoxemia and/or shock. Often, these disorders can be appropriately managed in an outpatient setting; however, these conditi

Microscopic Menaces: The Impact of Mites on Human Health.

Mites are highly prevalent arthropods that infest diverse ecological niches globally. Approximately 55,000 species of mites have been identified but many more are yet to be discovered. Of the ones we do know about, most go unnoticed by humans and animals. However, there are several species from the Acariformes superorder that exert a significant impact on global human health. House dust mites are a major source of inhaled allergens, affecting 10-20% of the world's population; storage mites also cause a significant allergy in susceptible individuals; chiggers are the sole vectors for the bacter

The Effects of Topical and Oral Creatine on Skin Firmness and Resilience: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Skin quality declines with intrinsic aging, environmental damage, and oxidative stress. Loss of skin firmness, a hallmark of aging, results from collagen degradation and fibroblast dysfunction, weakening the extracellular matrix (ECM). This leads to increased laxity and wrinkle formation, known as dermatoporosis. Creatine, a naturally occurring compound essential for cellular energy metabolism, has emerged as a potential agent for improving skin firmness. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of topical and oral creatine supplementation on skin firmness, focusing on cellular mechanism

RETROSPECTIVE REVIEW OF MORBIDITIES AND MORTALITIES OF JAGUARS MANAGED (PANTHERA ONCA) IN NORTH AMERICAN ZOOLOGICAL INSTITUTIONS, 2003-2023.

Previous retrospective studies on common morbidities and mortalities of jaguars (Panthera onca) provided information that led to changes in preventive medicine protocols and proactive medical care.8,11 However, new disease trends and medical conditions may emerge, change over time, or change location. Medical records from 139 jaguars housed in 35 North American zoological facilities between 2003 and 2023 were reviewed. Common morbidities and mortalities in different age groups were identified. Most morbidities involved the integumentary system (n = 173) in this study population, followed by th

Crocodylians evolved scattered multi-sensory micro-organs.

BACKGROUND: During their evolution towards a complete life cycle on land, stem reptiles developed both an impermeable multi-layered keratinized epidermis and skin appendages (scales) providing mechanical, thermal, and chemical protection. Previous studies have demonstrated that, despite the presence of a particularly armored skin, crocodylians have exquisite mechanosensory abilities thanks to the presence of small integumentary sensory organs (ISOs) distributed on postcranial and/or cranial scales. RESULTS: Here, we analyze and compare the structure, innervation, embryonic morphogenesis and s

The Model of Interstitial Cystitis for Evaluating New Molecular Strategies of Interstitial Regeneration in Humans.

Given the recent evidence in the clinical application of regenerative medicine, mostly on integumentary systems, we focused our interests on recent bladder regeneration approaches based on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and hyaluronic acid (HA) in the treatment of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) in humans. IC/BPS is a heterogeneous chronic disease with not-well-understood etiology, characterized by suprapubic pain related to bladder filling and urothelium dysfunction, in which the impairment of immunological processes seems to play an important

Hand injuries secondary to subcutaneous illicit drug injections.

We present a retrospective analysis of 32 patients admitted over a 5-year period to a metropolitan regional trauma center with recently induced subcutaneous ("skin pop") illicit drug injectional injuries involving the hand. Cocaine derivatives were the most frequently reported illicit drug used (75%). All patients had local disease manifested by subcutaneous abscess formation, and several had regional disease (cellulitis, lymphangitis, or lymphadenopathy), but only one patient had systemic illness. Microbiological analysis revealed endogenous integumentary and oral flora sensitive to oral prep

Explicating the multifunctional roles of tocotrienol and squalene in promoting skin health.

The skin is the largest organ in the integumentary system, protecting against various external threats, including ultraviolet exposure, heat, infections, dehydration and mechanical injuries. Skin disorders can arise from various causes, including allergic reactions or breaches in the skin barrier, which allow microorganisms or chemicals to penetrate the sweat ducts. These conditions encompass a wide range of issues, including acne, xerosis (dry skin), fungal infections, atopic dermatitis (eczema) and psoriasis. Collectively, these ailments affect a significant portion of the global population,

Antimicrobial resistance in methicillin susceptible and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius of canine origin: literature review from 1980 to 2013.

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is a commensal and a common opportunistic pathogen causing mainly infections of the integumentary system in dogs. The recent emergence of multidrug-resistant S. pseudintermedius isolates, in particular methicillin-resistant strains (MRSP) is a threat to small animal health and highlights the need for antimicrobial resistance surveillance to detect trends and potentially perform timeous interventions. We systematically reviewed 202 published articles to investigate temporal changes in antimicrobial resistance in clinical and commensal S. pseudintermedius isolated

A Selective Bottleneck Shapes the Evolutionary Mutant Spectra of Enterovirus A71 during Viral Dissemination in Humans.

RNA viruses accumulate mutations to rapidly adapt to environmental changes. Enterovirus A71 (EV-A71) causes various clinical manifestations with occasional severe neurological complications. However, the mechanism by which EV-A71 evolves within the human body is unclear. Utilizing deep sequencing and haplotype analyses of viruses from various tissues of an autopsy patient, we sought to define the evolutionary pathway by which enterovirus A71 evolves fitness for invading the central nervous system in humans. Broad mutant spectra with divergent mutations were observed at the initial infection si
