The effects of hydrocephalus on intelligence, visual perception and school attainment.

A group of 59 children with spina bifida, and a group of matched controls, were given detailed psychological and educational tests at five and seven years. The scores of the control group were similar to the national figures. The scores of the children with spina bifida only (without hydrocephalus) were closest to normal, but still below average. Those with spontaneously arrested hydrocephalus were in the backward range of abilities, and those with shunt-treated hydrocephalus had scores which generally were incompatible with normal levels of intelligence and attainment. Abnormal visuo-perceptu

Long-term intelligence outcome of post-encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis childhood moyamoya patients.

Long term post-encephalo-duro-arterio-synangiosis (EDAS) intelligence quotient (IQ) evaluated by Wechsler tests stays around the normal range (mean full intelligence quotient (FIQ), verbal intelligence quotient (VIQ) and performance intelligence quotient (PIQ) at 100.0 +/- 155, 100.0 +/- 15.7 and 100.2 +/- 163, respectively) at more than 9.5 years after the operation, provided that the patient has FIQ above 70 pre-operatively. This fact encourages us to employ operative treatment for this difficult disease in which intelligence deterioration has been reported to be a common occurrence.

The effects of theta transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on fluid intelligence.

The objective of the study was to explore the influence of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on resting brain activity and on measures of fluid intelligence. Theta tACS was applied to the left parietal and left frontal brain areas of healthy participants after which resting electroencephalogram (EEG) data was recorded. Following sham/active stimulation, the participants solved two tests of fluid intelligence while their EEG was recorded. The results showed that active theta tACS affected spectral power in theta and alpha frequency bands. In addition, active theta tACS improve

Intelligence and cognitive function in children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy is a chronic disease characterised by loss of motor function. The aim of the study was to analyse cognitive functions in a large group of patients with spinal muscular atrophy. It was hypothesised that their intelligence is comparable to controls, but not above average as previously postulated. Ninety-six children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy I-III, aged 6.0-18.11 years, 45 non-affected siblings and 59 healthy, matched controls were examined with one- (CPM/SPM), as well as multi-dimensional intelligence tests (Kaufman-ABC; Wechsler tests). The mean IQ me

Adaptation of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (WISC-IV) for Vietnam.

Intelligence testing is used for many purposes including identification of children for proper educational placement (e.g., children with learning disabilities, or intellectually gifted students), and to guide education by identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses so that teachers can adapt their instructional style to students' specific learning styles. Most of the research involving intelligence tests has been conducted in highly developed Western countries, yet the need for intelligence testing is as or even more important in developing countries. The present study, conducted through t

Long-term effect of head trauma on intellectual abilities: a 16-year outcome study.

BACKGROUND: Intelligence was assessed in a group of 74 people with head injury, 16 years after injury (mean 16.77 years; range 10-32 years), and compared with their performance when assessed at an early stage in recovery (mean 1.05 years). AIMS: To confirm the presence of long-term impairment relative to estimates of pre-accident ability, to confirm signs of deterioration between early (T1) and late (T2) measures, and to examine relationships between severity of injury, time since injury, length of education, sex and age, and performance on intelligence tests at T2. EXPECTED OUTCOMES: On the

Neuropsychological and neuroanatomical phenotype in 17 patients with cystinosis.

BACKGROUND: Cystinosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by intracellular cystine accumulation. Proximal tubulopathy (Fanconi syndrome) is one of the first signs, leading to end-stage renal disease between the age of 12 and 16. Other symptoms occur later and encompass endocrinopathies, distal myopathy and deterioration of the central nervous system. Treatment with cysteamine if started early can delay the progression of the disease. Little is known about the neurological impairment which occurs later. The goal of the present study was to find a possible neuroanatomical dysmorphic p

Intellectual and educational attainment in albinism.

We studied the intellectual and educational ability of a group of 18 albino children as compared with that of a group of demographically matched controls. Intellectual ability was measured using Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices, and educational ability was measured by the reading, spelling, and arithmetic tests of the Wide Range Achievement Test. There was no statistically significant difference in intelligence of the two groups. However, there was a significant difference in reading, spelling, and arithmetic skills. No correlation was found between the clinical features of the albino chi

A Polygenic Score for Higher Educational Attainment is Associated with Larger Brains.

People who score higher on intelligence tests tend to have larger brains. Twin studies suggest the same genetic factors influence both brain size and intelligence. This has led to the hypothesis that genetics influence intelligence partly by contributing to the development of larger brains. We tested this hypothesis using four large imaging genetics studies (combined N = 7965) with polygenic scores derived from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of educational attainment, a correlate of intelligence. We conducted meta-analysis to test associations among participants' genetics, total brain

Does artificial intelligence feedback result in different kinematic and muscle excitation patterns compared to physiotherapist feedback during lower-limb rehabilitation exercises?

BACKGROUND: Lower-limb rehabilitation exercises often require supervised feedback to ensure correct technique and muscle engagement. Artificial intelligence systems could provide an alternative to physiotherapy supervision, offering real-time feedback. This study aimed to compare effects of artificial intelligence-based feedback with physiotherapy feedback on kinematic and electromyographic outcomes during lower-limb exercises in healthy participants. METHODS: A repeated-measures design was employed, with uninjured participants performing four hip and knee exercises under physiotherapy and ar

Sex differences in estimating multiple intelligences in self and others: a replication in Russia.

This was a crosscultural study that focused on sex differences in self- and other-estimates of multiple intelligences (including 10 that were specified by Gardner, 1999 and three by Sternberg, 1988) as well as in an overall general intelligence estimate. It was one of a programmatic series of studies done in over 30 countries that has demonstrated the female "humility" and male "hubris" effect in self-estimated and other-estimated intelligence. Two hundred and thirty Russian university students estimated their own and their parents' overall intelligence and "multiple intelligences." Results re

Toxoplasmosis-associated difference in intelligence and personality in men depends on their Rhesus blood group but not ABO blood group.

BACKGROUND: The parasite Toxoplasma gondii influences the behaviour of infected animals and probably also personality of infected humans. Subjects with a Rhesus-positive blood group are protected against certain behavioural effects associated with Toxoplasma infection, including the deterioration of reaction times and personality factor shift. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here, we searched for differences in the toxoplasmosis-associated effects between RhD-positive and RhD-negative subjects by testing 502 soldiers with two personality tests and two intelligence tests. Current developments in artificial intelligence from obstetrics and gynecology to urogynecology.

In today's medical practice clinicians need to struggle with a huge amount of data to improve the outcomes of the patients. Sometimes one clinician needs to deal with thousands of ultrasound images or hundred papers of laboratory results. To overcome this shortage, computers get in help of human beings and they are educated under the term "artificial intelligence." We were using artificial intelligence in our daily lives (i.e., Google, Netflix, etc.), but applications in medicine are relatively new. In obstetrics and gynecology, artificial intelligence models mostly use ultrasound images for d

Chapter 17: cognitive assessment in neurology.

Modern interests in cognitive assessment began with Franz Gall's early 19th century theory of mental organology and Paul Broca's reports in the 1860s on patients with focal brain injury and aphemia. These workers spurred interest in assessing delimited mental abilities in relation to discrete cerebral areas. With roots in experimental and educational psychology, the intelligence testing movement added assessment tools that could be applied to neurological patients. Early- to mid-20th-century landmarks were Alfred Binet and Theodore Simon's intelligence scale, Howard Knox's nonverbal performanc

Monitoring dyslexics' intelligence and attainments: a follow-up study.

Intelligence (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children R and III, 1992) and written language attainment (BAS Word Reading, Neale Analysis of Reading, Vernon Graded Word Spelling) data for around 250 children attending a specialist school for dyslexics are presented. The Wechsler scales data show some evidence for 'ACID' and 'SCAD' profile effects on the subtests, with specifically weak Index scores on Freedom from Distractibility and Processing Speed. The relationship between intelligence and reading development is also examined, with evidence for significant correlations between intelligence
