Efficient reinnervation of hindlimb muscles by thoracic motor neurons after nerve cross-anastomosis in rats.

OBJECT: Peripheral motor axons can regenerate through motor endoneurial tubes of foreign nerves to reinnervate different target muscles. This regenerative capacity has been brought to clinical applications for restorative surgery after nerve or root injury. In this study the authors explore the extent to which nerve cross-anastomosis between lower intercostal nerves and lumbar ventral roots would be effective in inducing reinnervation of paralyzed hindlimb muscles after spinal cord hemisection at the thoracolumbar boundary in rats. METHODS: The proximal extremities of sectioned intercostal ne

Blood flow to the respiratory muscles during hypercapnic hyperpnoea in the newborn lamb.

The blood flow to the diaphragm, external and internal intercostal muscles, abdominal oblique muscles, and other rib-cage and abdominal muscles was measured, using radio-labelled microspheres, in 6 newborn lambs quietly breathing in air and during 3 different levels of CO2 induced hypercapnic hyperpnoea (inspired gas containing 4%, 5.5%, or 7% CO2). We also calculated the oxygen uptake of the diaphragm (VO2di). While the lambs were breathing air diaphragmatic blood flow (Qdi, 38.2 +/- 4.0 SEM ml.min-1.100 g-1) was similar to external intercostal muscle blood flow (Qei, 37.1 +/- 8.1 ml.min-1.10

Altered breathing pattern elicited by stimulation of abdominal visceral afferents.

The effect of stimulation of afferent mesenteric nerves on tidal volume (VT), phrenic nerve, and external intercostal muscle activities was studied in anesthetized spontaneously breathing cats. Both mechanical distension of the small intestine and electrical stimulation of the mesenteric nerves resulted in an initial inspiratory inhibition of VT followed by a gradual recovery above the prestimulus controls. Changes in VT were accompanied by a depression of phrenic nerve activity and an excitation of external intercostal muscle activity. During the recovery phase of VT, the amplitude of phrenic

Abnormal regulation of muscle contraction in horses with recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether abnormal regulation of muscle contraction similar to that associated with malignant hyperthermia (MH) was evident in intact external intercostal muscle cells from Thoroughbreds with recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER). ANIMALS: 5 adult Thoroughbred horses with RER and 7 clinically normal adult Thoroughbred or mixed-breed horses. PROCEDURES: Twitch time course variables and contracture responses to various concentrations of potassium, caffeine, and halothane were measured in small bundles of intact external intercostal muscle cells from clinically normal

Unifying classification for transdiaphragmatic intercostal hernia and other costal margin injuries.

OBJECTIVES: Taxonomy of injuries involving the costal margin is poorly described and surgical management varies. These injuries, though commonly caused by trauma, may also occur spontaneously, in association with coughing or sneezing, and can be severe. Our goal was to describe our experience using sequential segmental analysis of computed tomographic (CT) scans to perform accurate assessment of injuries around the costal margin. We propose a unifying classification for transdiaphragmatic intercostal hernia and other injuries involving the costal margin. We identify the essential components an

Prognostic assessment of the COPD patient: it is time to consider respiratory muscle ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragm and intercostal muscle dysfunction is common in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to high airway resistance and generalized skeletal muscle atrophy. Ultrasound is a noninvasive test that provides real-time assessment of respiratory muscle movement and function. METHODS: This single-center, prospective study was conducted at the respiratory medicine and ultrasound departments of a tertiary hospital over a period of 17 months, from January 2024 to June 2025. The research evaluated diaphragmatic and intercostal muscle thickness, thickening fracti

[Mechanism of the change in energy and electrolyte metabolism in the respiratory musculature in experimental botulism].

Distinct decrease in concentrations of creatine phosphate and K+ was observed in various respiratory muscles of cat in generalized botulism, accompanied by the syndrom of asphyxia. Content of glycogen and Na+ was unaltered in these cases. In local botulinic paralysis concentrations of creatine phosphate, glycogen and K+ were decreased in the respiratory muscles. Accumulation of Na+ was observed in diaphragm and intercostal muscles. Content of K+ and creatine phosphate was partially restored in respiratory muscles after intraperitoneal administration of guanidine HCl/50 mg/kg of body weight/.

Mechanical properties of normal and malignant hyperthemia susceptible porcine muscle: effects of halothane and other drugs.

Malignant hyperthemia, which can be initiated in susceptible humans and swine by the volatile anesthetic halothane, appears to result from abnormal responses in skeletal muscle. We have inferred the primary defect in susceptible muscles by observing their responses to certain drugs. Furthermore, we compared the responses of cut muscle cell preparations, such as those used in the diagnostic caffeine test, with those of intact muscle cells. Specifically, we investigated the effects of halothane, caffeine, succinylcholine and catecholamines on the mechanical properties of intact muscle cells from

Intercostal Nerve Block Using an Innovative Intraneedle Ultrasound Transducer: A Proof-of-Concept study.

Intercostal nerve block is a widely used and effective approach to providing regional anesthesia in the thoracic region for pain relief. However, during ultrasound-guided intercostal nerve block, inaccurate identification of the anatomic structures or suboptimal positioning of the needle tip may result in complications and blockade failure. In this study, we designed an intraneedle ultrasound (INUS) system and validated its efficacy in identifying anatomic structures relevant to thoracic region anesthesia. The 20-MHz INUS transducer comprised a single lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate cryst

Non traumatic acquired acute transdiaphragmatic intercostal hernia induced by coughing.

Transdiaphragmatic intercostal hernia is a rare disease. It is usually caused by trauma and is rarely caused by coughing. Although a few cases of intercostal hernia induced by coughing have been reported, our case of a non traumatic acquired acute transdiaphragmatic intercostal and abdominal hernia induced by coughing is very rare. A 77-year-old woman presented with sudden-onset left lower chest pain after an episode of violent coughing. She had risk factors for intercostal hernia, including obesity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, oral steroid use, and diabetes mellitus. Computed tomog

The effect of lung inflation on the inspiratory action of the canine parasternal intercostals.

Inflation induces a marked decrease in the lung-expanding ability of the diaphragm, but its effect on the parasternal intercostal muscles is uncertain. To assess this effect, the phrenic nerves and the external intercostals were severed in anesthetized, vagotomized dogs, such that the parasternal intercostals were the only muscles active during inspiration, and the endotracheal tube was occluded at different lung volumes. Although the inspiratory electromyographic activity recorded from the muscles was constant, the change in airway opening pressure decreased with inflation from -7.2+/-0.6 cmH

Fura-2 detected myoplasmic calcium and its correlation with contracture force in skeletal muscle from normal and malignant hyperthermia susceptible pigs.

Fura-2 was used to estimate myoplasmic [Ca2+] in intact intercostal muscle fibers from normal and malignant hyperthermia susceptible (MHS) pigs. Small muscle bundles (20-50 fibers) were loaded with the membrane-permeant form of the dye. Resting myoplasmic [Ca2+] were not significantly different in normal and MHS muscles. Halothane produced increases in myoplasmic Ca2+ with associated contractures in MHS muscles, but not in normal muscles. These halothane effects were reversible. Caffeine produced increases in myoplasmic Ca2+ and contractures in both MHS and normal muscles. The threshold concen

Inter- and Intra-examiner Reliability of Quantitative Assessment of Respiratory Muscle Cross-Sectional Areas on Preoperative Chest CT Images: A Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory sarcopenia, defined as reduced respiratory muscle mass and strength, and has been reported as a potential prognostic factor in lung cancer. In patients undergoing non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) surgery, preoperative chest computed tomography (CT) is routinely performed and offers an opportunity to assess respiratory muscle volume. However, the reliability of CT-based measurements for different respiratory muscles has not been established, and standardized protocols are lacking. This study aimed to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of respiratory muscle volume m

Respiratory muscle blood flow distribution during expiratory resistance.

When work load on the respiratory system is increased the relative increase in blood flow to each of the muscles of breathing provides an index of how the augmented effort of breathing is partitioned among the different muscles. We have used a radio-active microsphere technique to measure blood flow to each of the muscles of respiration in supine dogs during unobstructed respiration and breathing against graded expiratory threshold loads. 79% of the augmented flow went to expiratory muscles; of this increased flow to expiratory muscles 74% went to abdominal wall muscles and 26% to internal int

[A case report of diaphragmatic flutter].

A 18-year-old female complained of a dyspneic sensation and involuntary movements in the epigastrium. On physical examination, fine rhythmic movements in the epigastrium were observed on each inspiration with a rate of 5-10 per breath. Arterial blood gas analysis was normal. Recording of the respiratory parameters and the EMG of respiratory muscles were performed. Analysis of the respiratory flow revealed that her spontaneous inspirations consisted of short inspirations (i.e., flutter wave) (150-170 beats per minute). EMG of respiratory muscles demonstrated that these flutter waves were driven
