A meta-analytic review of Internet gaming disorder and the Big Five personality factors.

Two systematic reviews have been conducted to summarize the literature on Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and personality. However, the data was not synthesized statistically, imposing a limit to their conclusions. The current study aimed to extend on the two reviews by conducting a series of five meta-analyses, one for each of the Big Five personality factors, to examine their relationships with IGD. A comprehensive search was conducted on the databases PsycArticles, PsycInfo, and Web of Science from inception to 29 July 2021. The data was analyzed using Meta-Essentials and the random effects

Preventing Harmful Internet Use-Related Addiction Problems in Europe: A Literature Review and Policy Options.

Internet use-related addiction problems are increasingly being recognized on a European scale due to international health organizations considering gaming addiction. In April 2013, the American Psychiatric Association recognized Internet Gaming Disorder in the fifth Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and in April 2018, the World Health Organization included Gaming Disorder in the eleventh International Classification of Diseases. However, findings on these problems within this period are lacking in Europe, and a preventive approach is missing globally. A detailed critical l

A systematic review of Internet-based therapy for the treatment of addictions.

Traditional therapies for addictions are underutilized and characterized by high attrition rates suggesting they may not meet the needs of a proportion of individuals with addiction-related problems including problem drinking, smoking, substance use and problem gambling. Internet-based therapy has emerged as a new treatment modality for psychological disorders and health issues and this review is the first attempt to summarize and evaluate the evidence of the effectiveness of Internet therapy for addictions. Extensive literature searches were conducted to identify studies meeting the criteria

Internet Addiction and Other Behavioral Addictions.

The Internet is increasingly influential in the lives of adolescents. Although there are many positives, there are also risks related to excessive use and addiction. It is important to recognize clinical signs and symptoms of Internet addiction (compulsive use, withdrawal, tolerance, and adverse consequences), treat comorbid conditions (other substance use disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, and hostility), and initiate psychosocial interventions. More research on this topic will help to provide consensus on diagnostic criteria and further clarify optimal

Compulsivity-related behavioral features of problematic usage of the internet: A scoping review of paradigms, progress, and perspectives.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsivity contributes to the development and maintenance of multiple addictive disorders. However, the relationship between compulsivity-related cognitive features and problematic usage of the internet (PUI), an umbrella term for various internet use disorders/interfering behaviors, remains largely unclear, partly due to the multidimensional nature of compulsivity. This scoping review utilized a four-domain framework of compulsivity to consider this topic and aimed to summarize available evidence on compulsivity-related neuropsychological characteristics in PUI based on

Network analysis of internet addiction and sleep disturbance symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Internet addiction (IA) is a behavioral addiction to problematic internet use. IA is associated with poorer sleep quality. Few studies to date, however, have explored the interactions between symptoms of IA and symptoms of sleep disturbance. This study uses network analysis to identify bridge symptoms by analyzing these interactions in a large sample of students. METHOD: We recruited 1977 university students to participate in our study. Each student completed the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). We used these collected data for network a

A Standardized Questionnaire Protocol for Internet Addiction and Emotion-Regulation Assessment in University Students.

Internet use is deeply embedded in university life, but problematic internet use cannot be evaluated adequately by exposure time alone. Evidence suggests that maladaptive or compulsive patterns of internet use are associated with difficulty in emotion regulation, yet inconsistencies in questionnaire order, eligibility criteria, screening thresholds, scoring procedures, and analytic reporting continue to limit comparability across studies. This method's article presents a standardized questionnaire protocol for behavioral-science and psychological-assessment studies examining internet addiction

The association between psychological distress and internet addiction: A systematic review and three-level meta-analysis.

Internet addiction has emerged as a global public health concern, with psychological distress recognized as a key contributing factor. Numerous studies have investigated the association between psychological distress and Internet addiction; however, their findings have remained inconsistent, and the moderating factors influencing this relationship have not been comprehensively examined. To address these gaps, the present study conducted a three-level meta-analysis to systematically assess the association between psychological distress and Internet addiction, as well as to explore potential mod

Social anhedonia affects the trajectory of internet addiction in the college students: A latent growth curve analysis.

BACKGROUND/AIM: There is growing awareness that anhedonia plays a critical role in the development of Internet Addictions (IA). However, anhedonia is a multidimensional construct and different aspects of anhedonia may exert different effects on IA. This study was designed to distinguish the effects of social anhedonia and physical anhedonia on the developmental trajectory of IA among college students. METHODS: A total of 3577 Chinese college freshmen (Mage = 18.01, SD = 0.77; 65.4 % girls) participated in a 2-year, four waves longitudinal tracking study. The latent growth curve model (LGCM) w

Considering gender differences in the study and treatment of internet gaming disorder.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) is a multifaceted and complex addictive disorder characterized by poor impulse control and altered reward sensitivities, among other features. IGD is a male-predominant condition, and gender-related differences may contribute importantly to the development and maintenance of, and recovery from, IGD. METHODS: The current manuscript proposes a framework that incorporates gender-related considerations at different stages of IGD and proposes potential strategies for the prevention and treatment of IGD. RESULTS: At the development stage, high im

Internet gaming disorder and gaming disorder in the context of seeking and not seeking treatment for video-gaming.

The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and gaming disorder (GD) and the degree of concordance between treatment seeking for gaming and IGD/GD. One hundred gamers who sought treatment for their gaming were compared with one hundred gamers who never sought treatment and gamers who met IGD and/or GD criteria were compared with those who did not meet these criteria, regardless of their treatment-seeking status. These comparisons were made using semi-structured diagnostic interviews and self-report psychopathology and symptom measures. There w

Commentary: Did the internet cause an increase in the prevalence of mental disorders? - A commentary on Aboujaoude and Gega (2021).

The article by Aboujaoude and Gega has made it clear that the internet is associated with new mental health problems, such as internet addiction, and an increase in existing mental health problems, like gambling and compulsive buying, as well as wider issues such as safeguarding and privacy. One question is, however, whether the internet is a causal factor in the incidence of new mental disorders. It is also possible that the people who develop an internet-related disorder would have developed another disorder if the internet would not have existed. The vulnerability-stress model says that a m

There have been several diagnostic labels for persistent, excessive sexual behaviors, often referred in the popular media as sex addiction. Two related diagnoses, Internet addictive disorder and hypersexual disorder, were considered for, but not included in the 5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. However, most clinicians, even those trained in sexual disorders or addiction medicine, have little to no training in treating sexual compulsivity and cybersex addiction.
