Health Disparities, Inequalities and Inequities in Stroke Care: A Global Critical Integrative Review (1991-2024).

Growing evidence demonstrates the impact of health disparities on stroke care and outcomes. Although reviews have examined disparities related to sex and gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status and rural-urban residence, most have not accounted for the influence of multiple intersecting social identities or positions. This critical integrative review used a modified integrative review methodology with an intersectionality approach. We reported bibliographic trends and generated Upset Plots to analyze intersections among categories of social identity/position. Analysis was iterative to

Co-Designing Person- and Family-Centered Care for Older Adults Living With HIV: Protocol for a Community-Based Participatory Study.

BACKGROUND: Advances in antiretroviral therapy have transformed HIV into a chronic condition, leading to a growing population of adults aged 50 years and older living with HIV in Canada and globally. These individuals experience higher rates of multimorbidity, frailty, cognitive changes, and polypharmacy than their HIV-negative peers, and many rely on caregivers for emotional and practical support. Caregiving often occurs within chosen families of partners, friends, and community members, yet these caregivers remain largely unrecognized in policies that prioritize bio-legal family structures.

"If I don't take my treatment, I will die and who will take care of my child?": An investigation into an inclusive community-led approach to addressing the barriers to HIV treatment adherence by postpartum women living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: Initiatives to support adherence to HIV treatment in South Africa are often centred on service delivery thereby avoiding key challenges to adherence: stigma and poverty. In contrast, this study aims to demonstrate the strength of an inclusive research and programme approach to improving the lives of people living with HIV and simultaneously ARV adherence. METHODS: Participatory Action Research combined with a visual participatory method (Photovoice) was used by postpartum women to share their experience of taking ARVs. The research was analysed from an interpretative and critica

Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 impairs the release sites of Parkinson's disease vulnerable dopamine axons.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is defined pathologically by loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Yet synaptic dysfunction emerges much earlier, making it essential to define the mechanisms that drive early nigrostriatal deregulation. In the SNc, molecularly distinct dopamine neuron subtypes show differential susceptibility to PD. Here, we used intersectional genetic mouse models to determine how the PD-linked kinase LRRK2 affects vulnerable dopamine subtypes. Immunofluorescence and proximity-labeling proteomics revealed enriched LRRK2 expression in vulnerab

"An HIV Free Generation": A Qualitative Inquiry Into Mapping Intersectional Discourses of Preexposure Prophylaxis for Women Among Female Nurses in Rural South Africa.

South Africa has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world, with women and girls bearing the greatest burden. Although HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective, data on its implementation in rural South Africa remain limited. Our study explores how female nurses in Msinga, South Africa, navigate communal hopes and anxieties regarding PrEP for women. Using an intersectional framework, we conducted semistructured interviews with health care providers and engaged in thematic analysis with a sample of female nurses employed in Msinga, South Africa, to understand their perspective

Iatrogenic Harm, Psychotherapy, and Eating Disorders: An Urgent Call to Action.

Iatrogenic harm in psychotherapy remains under-recognised, despite longstanding evidence that psychological treatments can produce adverse effects. This omission is consequential in eating disorder care, where treatment is often intensive, prolonged and characterised by significant power asymmetries alongside poor long-term outcomes. This article examines iatrogenic harm in the context of eating disorders through an epistemic justice and intersectional framework. Drawing on qualitative and lived-experience-led scholarship, it argues that iatrogenesis is produced through structural features of

Transient YAP activation uncovers the neurogenic potential of proliferative mammalian Müller glia.

The Hippo pathway effector YAP promotes spontaneous proliferation of Müller glia (MG), suggesting that bypassing Hippo signaling and activating YAP could enhance retinal regeneration. However, whether proliferative adult MGs retain meaningful neurogenic competence remains unclear. Here, using viral delivery of a Hippo-resistant YAP variant to wild-type adult MGs, we achieved transient YAP activation in adult MGs, inducing proliferation followed by cell-cycle withdrawal and differentiation. Intersectional genetic lineage tracing and EdU labeling, combined with transcriptomic analyses, revealed

Precision Chemical Design for Reticular Spintronics.

The development of spin functionalities depends critically on magnetic materials in which spin states, exchange pathways, and transport properties can be precisely engineered at the atomic level. Reticular chemistry provides a modular and programmable platform to meet this need by enabling rigorous control over the composition, connectivity, and topology within periodic frameworks. At the intersection of these two fields, reticular spintronics exploits chemical precision to systematically modulate spin-active centers and exchange interactions while incorporating stimuli-responsive components f

Running Head: Dismissed and Ignored: Confronting the Trauma of Black Women Maternal Healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Black women in the United States face maternal mortality rates three to four times higher than their White counterparts despite advancements in obstetric care. Structural racism, gendered stereotypes, psychosocial stressors, and intersecting oppressions amplify the risk of adverse maternal health outcomes. This is part of a broader " dual burden" or stigma of being both Black and a woman. To further explain this dual burden, this study introduces the concept of "Black Tears" as an analytical framework that synthesizes the intersecting crises shaping Black maternal health. OBJECTIV

An immersive virtual peer for studying social influences on child cyclists' road-crossing behavior.

The goal of our work is to develop a programmatically controlled peer to bicycle with a human subject for the purpose of studying how social interactions influence road-crossing behavior. The peer is controlled through a combination of reactive controllers that determine the gross motion of the virtual bicycle, action-based controllers that animate the virtual bicyclist and generate verbal behaviors, and a keyboard interface that allows an experimenter to initiate the virtual bicyclist's actions during the course of an experiment. The virtual bicyclist's repertoire of behaviors includes road f

Medical assistance in dying and palliative care in Canada: clinical and ethical considerations in an evolving landscape.

Medical Assistance in Dying and palliative care represent distinct yet intersecting approaches to addressing suffering at the end of life. Their intersection has generated ethical and clinical debates regarding medical responsibility and patient autonomy at the end-of-life. This review examines this intersection by synthesizing empirical research, clinical literature and health policy. Requests for hastened death are often linked with psychological distress, social vulnerability, and unmet psychosocial needs rather than physical pain alone. Evidence shows that palliative care enhances quality

Invisible patients: Reframing women informal caregivers' access to healthcare and support services as a gendered health systems issue.

Women informal caregivers are overrepresented in unpaid and informal caregiving roles yet remain underrecognized as patients and policy subjects within health and social care systems. Despite extensive evidence that caregiving affects women's own health and healthcare engagement, their access barriers are frequently attributed to individual help-seeking behaviors rather than to systemic and gendered conditions. This conceptual paper argues that women informal caregivers' access to healthcare and support services should be understood as a gendered health systems issue shaped by sociocultural ex

Multi-agent meta-reinforcement learning based on contrastive predictive coding-For rapid adaptive traffic control after emergencies.

Emergency signal control has to clear emergency vehicles through intersections without creating excessive delay for ordinary traffic. Many existing controllers still depend on manually designed traffic features, and unfamiliar emergency patterns often require additional training before the control policy can be adjusted reliably. For this setting, a multi-agent meta-reinforcement learning framework is developed using Contrastive Predictive Coding (CPC) for traffic state representation. CPC compresses high-dimensional traffic sequences into compact representations that are subsequently used by

Classroom Debate as a Pedagogical Method to Explore the Relationship Between the Medical System and Patient Community Members.

There are multiple complexities within the practice of medicine wherein the vantage of the medical community might be limited or in direct conflict with the vantage of a patient population. Reproductive justice (RJ) is a framework developed from the vantage of Black women's health activists to identify and address inequitable reproductive health outcomes, consider the intersection of reproductive rights and social justice, and center the experiences of historically marginalized communities. Using the contemporary example of the federal Medicaid Sterilization Form, we highlight how the pedagogy

Shifting power: co-developing a framework for equity in healthcare.

BACKGROUND: Efforts to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in healthcare have grown quickly in recent years, spurred by the broader calls to confront systemic racism and address structural inequities exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. While EDI initiatives have gained visibility across various healthcare domains, such as patient safety, quality improvement, and social innovation, there are questions about how deeply they engage with the systemic roots of inequity. The objective of this paper is to describe the development of a framework designed to guide healthcare organizations

The intersecting effects of race/ethnicity, wealth, education, and gender on AIDS among 28.3 million Brazilians.

Health inequities in Latin America are rooted in historical systems of oppression, including slavery, patriarchy, and colonialism, which disproportionately affect socially marginalized groups. Intersectionality theory offers a framework to examine how overlapping social markers interact to shape health outcomes. While HIV/AIDS research has explored the effects of individual markers, few studies have addressed their intersections. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from 28.3 million Brazilians aged ≥13 years. We examined associations between race/ethnicity, education, and weal

Gender and other intersecting factors in antimicrobial resistance for infectious diseases of poverty: a systematic evidence gap analysis in low- and lower-middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Gender influences health outcomes by affecting exposure to risk factors, healthcare access, and health-seeking behaviours. Yet, many studies fail to consider how these gendered experiences interact with other social factors, such as age, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity. Our study systematically mapped existing research to identify gaps in understanding how these factors affect service delivery outcomes related to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) for infectious diseases of poverty. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and evidence gap map analysis following PRISMA 2020 guidel
