Management and Outcomes of Intestinal Atresia - A Single Institution Experience From 1947 to 2019.

AIM OF THE STUDY: We aimed to evaluate disease characteristics, associated malformations and surgical outcomes of congenital intestinal atresia. METHODS: We identified all patients with jejunoileal (JIA) or colonic atresia (CA) treated at the Helsinki University Children's hospital during 1947-2019 and collected clinical data retrospectively from archived and electronic medical records. RESULTS: Of the 180 included patients, 156 had JIA and 24 CA. Overall survival improved markedly from 34% during 1947-1977 to 93% during 1978-2019. Rate of primary anastomosis (81% in JIA, 21% in CA) remained

Congenital intestinal atresias with multiple episodes of sepsis: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Hereditary multiple intestinal atresia associated with severe combined immunodeficiency (MIA-SCID) is a very rare disease caused by deleterious mutations in the tetratricopeptide repeat domain-containing protein 7A gene TTC7A. It is characterized by intestinal obstruction, sepsis, and a poor prognosis. Insights into phenotype-genotype correlations could help to guide genetic counseling and increase our knowledge of the natural history of this disease. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a newborn in which his fetal magnetic resonance imaging showed jejunal atresia and micro

MYCN haploinsufficiency is associated with reduced brain size and intestinal atresias in Feingold syndrome.

Feingold syndrome is characterized by variable combinations of esophageal and duodenal atresias, microcephaly, learning disability, syndactyly and cardiac defect. We show here that heterozygous mutations in the gene MYCN are present in Feingold syndrome. All mutations are predicted to disrupt both the full-length protein and a new shortened MYCN isoform, suggesting that multiple aspects of early embryogenesis and postnatal brain growth in humans are tightly regulated by MYCN dosage.

Intestinal atresia and stenosis: a retrospective analysis of presentation, morbidity and mortality in Zaria, Nigeria.

Over a period of 19 years 22 children with intestinal atresia and stenosis were managed at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital Zaria. The condition ranks as the fourth most common cause of neonatal intestinal obstruction after anorectal malformation, Hirschsprung's disease and strangulated inguinal hernia at the hospital. Three patients had duodenal atresia, 18 had jejunoileal involvement (atresia 15, stenosis 3) and one colonic atresia. The median age at presentation to the surgeon was 6 days (range 1 day-2 years). The common features were bilious vomiting and abdominal distension,

[Small intestine atresia and abnormal insertion of the umbilicus in a child with fetal alcohol syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome is quite common in our region (incidence: 1/700 live births). It usually associates facial dysmorphism, intra-uterine growth retardation and mental delay. CASE REPORT: Jonathan, born to an alcoholic mother, presented a typical dysmorphy of fetal alcohol syndrome and a low inserted umbilicus. A small bowel atresia was discovered at the third day of life and operated on. CONCLUSION: Although never been previously described, this association suggests a common embryological origin between fetal alcohol syndrome, small bowel atresia, and umbilical abnormality.

Long-term outcomes for infants with intestinal atresia studied at Children's National Medical Center.

OBJECTIVES: Intestinal atresia is a common cause of intestinal obstruction in neonates. The predominant cause of late complications in these children is prolonged dependence on parenteral nutrition (PN). Our aims were to analyze the outcomes for patients with intestinal atresia at our institution, and to see how these changed with the implementation of an intestinal rehabilitation program (IRP). METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study. The patient population is all children with intestinal atresias (118 patients) treated at our institution from July 2000 to June 2010, 20 of whom became

Hereditary Multiple Intestinal Atresia With a Novel TTC7A Pathogenic Variant: Gastrointestinal Manifestations in Two Cases.

Hereditary multiple intestinal atresia (HMIA) with TTC7A mutation is caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous TTC7A gene mutation. It is characterized by multiple small and large intestinal atresias and/or stenoses. TTC7A mutation is described in some patients with inflammatory bowel disease and mild-severe forms of severe combined immunodeficiency without intestinal atresia or stenosis. We present 2 cases of intestinal atresia and documented TTC7A mutation with a novel variant. Both cases had different clinical and pathological manifestations. The first case is a male infant born at 35 w

A Novel Homozygous TTC7A Missense Mutation Results in Familial Multiple Intestinal Atresia and Combined Immunodeficiency.

Rare autosomal-recessive variants in tetratricopeptide repeat domain 7A (TTC7A) gene have been shown to cause intestinal and immune disorders of variable severity. Missense mutations in TTC7A gene, usually retaining most of the functional motifs, is associated with relative milder clinical presentations. In this study, we reported a patient who was suffering from severe multiple intestinal atresia (MIA) with combined immunodeficiency (CID) that led to the pyloric diaphragm, ileum atresia, colon stenosis, and multiple episodes of sepsis. In spite of several surgeries and supportive treatment, t
