The role of MUC2 mucin in intestinal homeostasis and the impact of dietary components on MUC2 expression.

MUC2 mucin is an important secretory protein found in the human gut. Recent studies indicated that MUC2 mucin plays a role in the protection of gut barrier, the regulation of microbiome homeostasis and the prevention of diseases. In this review, the physiological properties of MUC2 mucin and its interactions with the intestinal microbiome are firstly discussed. Its roles in intestinal diseases including inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer and parasitic infections are concluded. We also reviewed dietary components known to have modulative effects on MUC2 mucin expression, such as poly

[ASSESSMENT OF POTENTIAL RISK FOR CONTAMINATION OF SURFACE WATER RESERVOIRS BY PATHOGENS OF HUMAN PARASITIC DISEASES].

Sanitary and parasitological studies of the waste effluents and surface reservoir waters were conducted in the south of Russia. The efficiency of purification of waste effluents from the pathogens of parasitic diseases was investigated in the region's sewage-purification facilities. The water of the surface water reservoirs was found to contain helminthic eggs and larvae and intestinal protozoan cysts because of the poor purification and disinfection of service fecal sewage waters. The poor purification and disinvasion of waste effluents in the region determine the potential risk of contaminat

[Progress of researches on traveler's diarrhea caused by parasitic infections].

With the rapid development of global tourism, traveling gradually becomes an important part of daily lives, and travelers'health is paid more and more attention. Traveler's diarrhea (TD) is one of the most common diseases among international or trans-regional travelers, which causes great disease and economic burdens. Currently, there is still a lack of systematic studies on the correlation between parasites and TD. The review mainly summarizes intestinal protozoa and helminth infections among patients with TD, so as to provide insights into the development of the control measures for parasiti

Parasitic diarrheal disease: drug development and targets.

Diarrhea is the manifestation of gastrointestinal infection and is one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity specifically among the children of less than 5 years age worldwide. Moreover, in recent years there has been a rise in the number of reports of intestinal infections continuously in the industrialized world. These are largely related to waterborne and food borne outbreaks. These occur by the pathogenesis of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms like bacteria and parasites. The parasitic intestinal infection has remained mostly unexplored and under assessed in terms of thera

Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of intestinal parasites among patients of a medical center in central Taiwan: a retrospective study of Blastocystis infection.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections remain among the most common infectious diseases worldwide, posing significant public health challenges. Blastocystis spp., in particular, has emerged as the most prevalent microorganism detected in human stool examinations in recent years. Accumulating evidence suggests a potential association between specific Blastocystis subtypes and gastrointestinal disturbances. This study aimed to assess the current epidemiological profile of intestinal parasitic infections in Taiwan and to explore potential associations between parasitic infections and chronic

Prevalence of intestinal parasites in HIV-positive patients on the island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea: its relation to sanitary conditions and socioeconomic factors.

The prevalence of intestinal parasitic diseases and their associated factors has been investigated in HIV populations from the Island of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea. The feces of 310 participants from the island of Bioko (260 HIV-positive and 50 HIV-negative) were analyzed by microscopic observation. Immunochromatography was also used to diagnose Giardia, Entamoeba histolytica and Cryptosporidium spp. In addition, patients were asked for sociodemographic, economic and academic status, and CD4+ T cell counts were recorded. For HIV-positive patients, the prevalence of infection by intestinal parasi

Intestinal Parasitic Infections, Eosinophilia, and Th1/Th2 Immune Profiles in Haemodialysis Patients.

Patients undergoing haemodialysis are known to have compromised immune function, which can increase their susceptibility to infections, including intestinal parasitic diseases. These infections can manifest more severely in this population. Typically, the immune response to parasitic infections involves a shift from a Th1-dominant response-more effective against intracellular pathogens-to a Th2-dominant response, which promotes eosinophilia and IgE production. Participants were categorised into eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic groups based on eosinophil counts (< 10 cells/mL). T-bet and GATA-
