BACKGROUND: There are many types of treatments for calcaneal fractures, including conservative treatment, conventional surgical treatment, and minimally invasive surgery. The choice of specific treatment options is still controversial. Open reduction and internal fixation are currently the most commonly used surgical procedures in the clinic. A good fracture reduction effect can be achieved by using the lateral extension incision of the calcaneus; however, many studies have reported a high incidence of postoperative incision complications. Although there are many methods for the classification

BACKGROUND: Small fracture fragments of the palmar lunate facet of the distal radius can be difficult to stabilize and may cause loss of reduction and even subluxation of the radiocarpal joint.
MATERIAL & METHODS: The aims of the study were to investigate fracture patterns of the intermediate column in 101 intra-articular distal radius fractures with three-dimensional computed tomography, and to determine the prevalence of palmar lunate facet fracture fragments. The size of the fragments was measured to find out how many fragments were small.
RESULTS: The palmar lunate facet fragment was pre

Displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures represent life-altering injuries. Difficulty obtaining and maintaining calcaneal morphology and the significant risk of wound healing complications with an extensile lateral incision exist. Open reduction with internal fixation as a joint-sparing approach has been studied. Closed manipulation to restore calcaneal morphology, intra-osseous fracture reduction, and rigid locked CALCANAIL fracture nail fixation have recently been applied to Sanders IV fracture patterns. Spontaneous conversion to primary subtalar joint arthrodesis using the same instrum

A better understanding of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures, their effect on joint mechanics, and the relationship between altered mechanics and osteoarthritis could aid in the development or refinement of treatment methods. Finite element modeling is accepted as the reference standard for evaluating joint contact stresses. The objective of the present study was to analyze the in vivo joint mechanical data from finite element modeling for normal and injured subtalar joints. A 3-dimensional model of the ankle-hindfoot was developed and validated. Both height loss and width increases

INTRODUCTION: Less invasive restoration of joint congruity and calcaneal shape in displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures via a sinus tarsi approach followed by percutaneous internal fixation with an interlocking nail results in a low rate of soft-tissue complications and good short-term outcomes1 (Video 1).
STEP 1 PATIENT PLACEMENT: Place the patient in the lateral decubitus position, supporting the involved extremity with a soft radiolucent pillow, flex the contralateral knee, check with fluoroscopy before draping, and obtain lateral radiographs.
STEP 2 INCISION: Use a sinus tarsi ap

PURPOSE: To detect concomitant intra-articular glenohumeral injuries, in acute displaced fractures of the lateral clavicle, initially missed due to unfeasible clinical evaluation of the acutely injured shoulder.
METHODS: All patients suffering from an acute displaced lateral clavicle fracture with indication to surgical treatment underwent diagnostic shoulder arthroscopy prior to open reduction and internal fixation. In case of therapy-relevant intra-articular glenohumeral injuries, subsequent surgical treatment was performed.
RESULTS: Intra-articular injuries were found in 13 of 28 patients

Calcaneal fractures are rare injuries in children and adolescents, and fractures with displaced intra-articular fracture patterns are even more rare. The purpose of this study was to report 9 intra-articular calcaneal fractures in 8 children (mean age, 12.6 years; range,10-15 years) treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and to examine cases reported in the literature to better define the classification characteristics and operational outcomes of this uncommon fracture. Preoperative radiographs and computed tomography scans were used to evaluate and classify the fractures. Cl

BACKGROUND: Clinical results for the treatment of displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures are mainly expressed using disease-specific outcome scores, physical examination and radiographs. We hypothesized that plantar pressure and foot position analysis is a valuable tool in assessing foot function in patients with a unilateral displaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture treated percutaneously.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: With a followup of at least one year, 21 patients with a unilateral displaced intra-articular calcaneal fracture treated percutaneously participated in the study. The pedob

Multiple wound closure techniques have been described for a lateral extensile calcaneal incision in the literature. In this article, a technique is presented that involves a subcutilar closure over a closed drain system, which has proven to be effective in minimizing sural nerve injury and wound dehiscence in open reduction internal fixation of 20 calcaneal fractures.

New techniques of internal fixation, postoperative rehabilitation, and emphasis on functional as well as radiographic outcome have refined the surgical treatment of complex fractures of the glenoid, humeral head, supracondylar and intracondylar humerus, olecranon, radial head, distal radius, and distal radioulnar joint over the past decade. Early stabilization and rehabilitation of these injuries leads to soft-tissue stabilization and facilitates the patient's ability to place the hand in three-dimensional space.
