Ellagic Acid Reduces Inulin's Adverse Effects: A Combined Approach to Enhance Therapeutic Potential in Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis.

This mouse study investigates the efficacy of ellagic acid (EA), a potent antioxidant in fruits and nuts, and inulin, a prebiotic known for gut microbiota benefits, in nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). A Western-style diet (WD) was used to induce NASH in C57BL/6J male mice for 16 weeks. Mice then received EA (100 mg/kg/day, oral gavage, 5 days/week) and/or 5% inulin (w/w in diet) for 12 weeks while continuing WD. Inulin increased energy intake and trended toward higher body weight and fasting glucose. EA reduced liver weights and restored the liver-to-body weight ratio. EA and inulin combin

The effect and potential mechanism of inulin combined with fecal microbiota transplantation on early intestinal immune function in chicks.

Our previous research found that fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and inulin synergistically affected the intestinal barrier and immune system function in chicks. However, does it promote the early immunity of the poultry gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT)? How does it regulate the immunity? We evaluated immune-related indicators in the serum, cecal tonsil, and intestine to determine whether FMT synergistic inulin had a stronger impact on gut health and which gene expression regulation was affected. The results showed that FMT synergistic inulin increased TGF-β secretion and intestina

Gut microbiota mediates the effects of inulin on enhancing sulfomucin production and mucosal barrier function in a pig model.

Dietary fibers (DFs) have many beneficial effects on intestinal health by ameliorating intestinal inflammation and modulating the microbial community composition, thereby affecting the barrier function. This study aims to characterize the gut microbiota of pigs fed with DFs, revealing a link between the intestinal microbiota and mucin chemotypes. Pigs (six per group) were randomly allotted to consume one of the following diets: control (CON) or a diet supplemented with 5% microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) or inulin (INU) for 72 days. We found that INU but not MCC enhanced the colonic barrier fu

N-acetyl cysteine, inulin and the two as a combined therapy ameliorate cognitive decline in testosterone-deprived rats.

Our previous studies reported that testosterone-deprived rats developed cognitive decline as a result of increased brain oxidative stress, microglia hyperactivity, and hippocampal dysplasticity. In addition, gut dysbiosis occurred in these rats. Previous studies demonstrated that n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) and a prebiotic (inulin) improved cognition in several pathological conditions. However, its effects on cognition in the testosterone-deprived condition have never been investigated. This study hypothesized that the administration of NAC, inulin, and a combined therapy improved cognition in cas

Metabolic response of the gastrointestinal tract and serum parameters of rabbits to diets containing chicory flour rich in inulin.

A 36-day experiment carried out on 54-day-old rabbits addressed the analysis of physiological properties of diets supplemented with chicory roots flour. Twenty-four rabbits were allocated in individual cages to three treatments, in which they were fed each diet with the chicory flour at 0, 25 and 50 g/kg (control, ChF(2.5) and ChF(5) groups respectively). The chicory preparation administered at a higher dose, lowered ileal pH and viscosity, and evoked increased hydration of ileal and caecal digesta, compared to the control treatment (p </= 0.05). The ChF(2.5) group was characterized by the hig

Instant Cascara Beverages with Inulin-Type Carriers: Production Yield, In Vitro Biological Activity and Receptor-Level Responses.

Background: Instant Cascara (IC) beverages, derived from dried coffee cherry pulp, represent an upcycled plant-based ingredient rich in phenolic compounds and methylxanthines. Although spray-drying enables the production of soluble cascara powders without carriers, previous sensory evaluation highlighted limitations in palatability, supporting the need for formulation strategies. Objective: To evaluate how the incorporation of inulin-type carriers with different degrees of polymerization modulates production yield, the apparent recovery of bioactive compounds, and formulation-dependent in vitr

NIR- and pH-responsive double-crosslinked inulin-tannic acid hydrogel with antioxidant and Anti-Staphylococcus aureus Activity.

Oxidative stress and bacterial infections can lead to compromised tissue regeneration in chronic wounds. Since traditional treatments are often ineffective, in this study a hydrogel based on two inulin derivatives, called dcINU-TA-NS, was design as multifunctional wound dressing platform with in vitro Anti-Staphylococcus aureus and antioxidant performance. Thanks to double crosslinking the hydrogel is characterized by modulable viscoelastic properties: dynamic interactions, based on the boronic ester bonds between inulin functionalized with 3-aminophenyl boronic acid (INU-APBA) and tannic acid

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy with Extreme Emaciation and a Discrepancy between Cystatin C-based eGFR and Inulin Clearance.

We describe the case of a 25-year-old male with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and acute kidney injury who was receiving mechanical ventilation. The patient's estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was assessed using formulas based on creatinine, cystatin C, and inulin levels over time during the recovery of his renal function. The creatinine-based eGFR was extremely high throughout the study period. The cystatin C-based eGFR was also higher than the inulin clearance. These findings suggest that cystatin C-based eGFR may also exceed inulin clearance in patients with an extremely reduced fat

Oral colon-retentive inulin gels protect against radiation-induced hematopoietic and gastrointestinal injury by improving gut homeostasis.

Ionizing radiation-induced injury often occurs in nuclear accidents or large-dose radiotherapy, leading to acute radiation syndromes characterized by hematopoietic and gastrointestinal injuries even to death. However, current radioprotective drugs are only used in hospitals with unavoidable side effects. Here, we heated the aqueous solution of inulin, a polysaccharide dietary fiber, forming colon-retentive gel as a radiation protector in radiotherapy. Mouse models were established after 60Co γ-ray irradiation of the total body or abdomen. Inulin gels were orally administered to the mice every

Immunomodulatory effects of inulin-type fructans from Arctium lappa L. by targeting gut microbiota and their metabolites.

This study aimed to examine the in vitro digestion properties and immunomodulatory effects of inulin-type fructans (ALP-1) from Arctium lappa L. on immunosuppressive mice and to explore the underlying mechanisms. The simulated gastrointestinal digestion showed that ALP-1 underwent slight degradation during gastric and intestinal fluid digestion, with most of it reaching the gut as long-chain structures. The administration of ALP-1 effectively improved overall health and regulated immune function according to the spleen index, thymus index, splenic T-lymphocyte subsets, and other immune-related

Inulin Can Improve Red Blood Cell Cryopreservation by Promoting Vitrification, Stabilizing Cell Membranes, and Inhibiting Ice Recrystallization.

In transfusion medicine, the cryopreservation of red blood cells (RBCs) is of major importance. The organic solvent glycerol (Gly) is considered the current gold-standard cryoprotectant (CPA) for RBC cryopreservation, but the deglycerolization procedure is complex and time-consuming, resulting in severe hemolysis. Therefore, it remains a research hotspot to find biocompatible and effective novel CPAs. Herein, the natural and biocompatible inulin, a polysaccharide, was first employed as a CPA for RBC cryopreservation. The presence of inulin could improve the thawed RBC recovery from 11.83 ± 1.4

Effects of dietary inulin supplementation on growth performance, intestinal barrier integrity and microbial populations in weaned pigs.

Here, we explored the influences of dietary inulin (INU) supplementation on growth performance and intestinal health in a porcine model. Thirty-two male weaned pigs (with an average body weight of 7·10 (sd 0·20) kg) were randomly assigned to four treatments and fed with a basal diet (BD) or BD containing 2·5, 5·0 and 10·0 g/kg INU. After a 21-d trial, pigs were killed for collection of serum and intestinal tissues. We show that INU supplementation had no significant influence on the growth performance in weaned pigs. INU significantly elevated serum insulin-like growth factor-1 concentration b

Dietary inulin alters the gut microbiome, enhances systemic metabolism and reduces neuroinflammation in an APOE4 mouse model.

The apolipoprotein ε4 allele (APOE4) is the strongest genetic risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). APOE4 carriers develop systemic metabolic dysfunction decades before showing AD symptoms. Accumulating evidence shows that the metabolic dysfunction accelerates AD development, including exacerbated amyloid-beta (Aβ) retention, neuroinflammation and cognitive decline. Therefore, preserving metabolic function early on may be critical to reducing the risk for AD. Here, we show that inulin increases beneficial microbiota and decreases harmful microbiota in the feces of young, asymptomatic APOE4

Inulin Ameliorates Alcoholic Liver Disease via Suppressing LPS-TLR4-Mψ Axis and Modulating Gut Microbiota in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) represents a chronic liver disorder caused by alcohol abuse. Numerous studies have demonstrated that gut microbiota dysbiosis plays a critical role in ALD pathogenesis. Application of prebiotic, probiotic, and dietary supplementation to the modulation of gut microbiota contributes to a novel approach to the management of ALD. Inulin, a natural prebiotic found in plants, can restore gut dysbiosis in ALD. However, the exact mechanism of dietary inulin in ALD remains largely unknown. METHODS: Sixty female C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into 4 groups

Prebiotic inulin supplementation modulates the immune response and restores gut morphology in Giardia duodenalis-infected malnourished mice.

Malnutrition induces a state of growth retardation and immunologic depression, enhancing the host susceptibility to various infections. In the present study, it was observed that prebiotic supplementation either prior or simultaneously with Giardia infection in malnourished mice significantly reduced the severity of giardiasis and increased the body and small intestine mass, along with increased lactobacilli counts in faeces compared with malnourished-Giardia-infected mice. More specifically, prebiotic supplementation significantly increased the levels of anti-giardial IgG and IgA antibodies a
