Concentrations of methylmercury in invertebrates from wetlands of the Prairie Pothole Region of North America.

Prairie wetlands may be important sites of mercury (Hg) methylation resulting in elevated methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in water, sediments and biota. Invertebrates are an important food resource and may act as an indicator of MeHg exposure to higher organisms. In 2007-2008, invertebrates were collected from wetland ponds in central Saskatchewan, categorized into functional feeding groups (FFGs) and analyzed for total Hg (THg) and MeHg. Methylmercury and THg concentrations in four FFGs ranged from 0.2-393.5 ng · g(-1) and 9.7-507.1 ng · g(-1), respectively. Methylmercury concentrations g

Biodegradation of PBAT/PLA mulch films synergizes lethal and sublethal ecotoxicity of insecticides to soil invertebrates.

Biodegradable plastic mulch films are increasingly adopted in agriculture, yet the ecotoxicological risks arising from their degradation products in mixtures with concurrent chemical inputs remain largely unexplored. This study assessed the lethal and sublethal toxicity of PBAT/PLA biodegradation products combined with four soil-applied insecticides (abamectin, cyantraniliprole, sulfoxaflor, and thiamethoxam) on the soil invertebrates Folsomia candida and Stratiolaelaps scimitus across a 12-week degradation period. In F. candida, PBAT/PLA biodegradation products synergized the lethal toxicity

A Field-Friendly, Non-Toxic Fixative for Integrated Morphological and Molecular Research in Non-Model Invertebrates.

Formalin, ethanol, and RNAlater are the most commonly used fixatives for morphological and molecular studies. Formalin is preferred for preserving tissue morphology, whereas ethanol and RNAlater are used to obtain high-quality nucleic acids for molecular analyses, including emerging -omics techniques. Over the past few years, the study of non-model organisms has gained attention, but the lack of laboratory cultures for many species requires collecting and fixing the animals directly in the field. Very often, just a few specimens are secured, limiting the possibility of using multiple fixatives

The occurrence of paralytic shellfish toxins in invertebrates, forage fishes and predatory fishes across southern Alaska.

In Alaska, paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) is associated with the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, which blooms annually along the coastline from the Canadian border to the Beaufort Sea. While it has long been recognized that these blooms cause annual outbreaks of shellfish toxicity each spring and summer, little is known about other pathways for PSP toxins in the marine food web. Here, we present data from a four-year study to characterize the occurrence of PSTs in marine non-bivalve invertebrates, forage fishes and predatory fishes across the breadth of southern Alaska. Sample

Toxic Effects of Fine Plant Powder Impregnated With Avermectins on Mosquito Larvae and Nontarget Aquatic Invertebrates.

The toxic effects of an avermectin-impregnated fine plant powder (AIFP) against larval Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae), Culex modestus Ficalbi (Diptera: Culicidae), and Anopheles messeae Falleroni (Diptera: Culicidae), as well as selected nontarget aquatic invertebrates, were studied under laboratory conditions. The possibility of trophic transfer of avermectins (AVMs) through the food chain and their toxic effects on predaceous species fed AIFP-treated mosquito larvae was also evaluated. Among mosquitoes, Anopheles messeae were the most sensitive to AIFP, while Cx. modestus exhibited th

Ocean acidification increases copper toxicity differentially in two key marine invertebrates with distinct acid-base responses.

Ocean acidification (OA) is expected to indirectly impact biota living in contaminated coastal environments by altering the bioavailability and potentially toxicity of many pH-sensitive metals. Here, we show that OA (pH 7.71; pCO2 1480 μatm) significantly increases the toxicity responses to a global coastal contaminant (copper ~0.1 μM) in two keystone benthic species; mussels (Mytilus edulis) and purple sea urchins (Paracentrotus lividus). Mussels showed an extracellular acidosis in response to OA and copper individually which was enhanced during combined exposure. In contrast, urchins maintai

[Effect of zinc-enriched sediments, in open and isolated systems, on three species of benthonic invertebrates].

Availability of toxics in aquatic bodies is limited by the physicochemical characteristics of sediments and water, as well as by the interactions between the different xenobiotics and inhabits species. The aim of this work was to relate the effect produced by zinc (Zn) spiked in sediments of the Ignacio Ramirez dam (PIR), in isolated and microcosms models, on ATP concentration of three benthic organisms with the metal biodisponibility. The selected species were a crustacean, an annelid and a mollusk: Hyalella azteca (Amphipoda: Hyalellidae), Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (Oligochaeta: Tubificidae)

Exploring the applicability of SYBR stains for whole-mount high-resolution confocal microscopy of chemosymbiotic invertebrates.

Localization of bacterial symbionts within host tissues and determination of their morphology are essential for unraveling the biology of chemosymbiotic marine invertebrates. Confocal microscopy offers the potential to visualize bacterial symbionts in whole-mount preparations of host animals or tissues with minimal sample preparation. Here, we investigated the applicability of SYBR stains for visualizing the distribution of symbionts in the gills of thyasirid bivalves and in the trophosome of the siboglinid Siboglinum fiordicum. We demonstrate that SYBR stains, particularly SYBR Gold and SYBR

Environmental DNA Metabarcoding Reveals Diversity and Spatiotemporal Variations of Benthic Invertebrates in Hun River Basin, China.

Freshwater biodiversity underpins ecosystem functioning and human well-being. As the most diverse taxonomic groups in freshwater ecosystems, benthic invertebrates are widely employed as bioindicators for aquatic monitoring and health assessment. In this study, environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding was used to reveal the diversity and spatiotemporal variations in benthic invertebrates in the Hun River Basin (the middle and upper reaches). Sampling was conducted in spring, summer, and autumn, with sites arranged to cover both anthropogenic activities and watershed environmental conditions. A to

Application of a high-throughput respirometry technique for assessing respiratory metabolism of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates.

Respiratory metabolism is one of the key ecological traits of organisms. As such, it is studied by ecologists from a wide range of disciplines, from macroecological studies to evolutionary biology, with the global changes context making the need for its understanding more pressing. Unfortunately, properly measuring respiration is a time- and cost-intensive endeavor, and gathering large datasets can be prohibitive due to the difficulty of measuring it. Here, we describe a fluorescence-based high-throughput closed-system respirometry technique for terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates, able to m

Mercury bioaccumulation and speciation in coastal invertebrates: Implications for trophic magnification in a marine food web.

Studies on mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in coastal invertebrates in eastern Canada are limited, but these data are necessary to determine risk of mercury exposure effects in upper trophic level organisms. We quantified methylmercury (MeHg), total mercury (THg), and stable isotopes of δ13C and δ15N in 14 species of invertebrates in the Minas Basin. The overall mean concentration of MeHg (12.78 ± 11.23 ng/g dw) was approximately 10 times below the Canadian guideline for the protection of wildlife consumers like fish and birds of 157.20 ng/g dry weight (dw). Bioactive compounds from marine invertebrates as potent anticancer drugs: the possible pharmacophores modulating cell death pathways.

Marine invertebrates are extremely diverse, largely productive, untapped oceanic resources with chemically unique bioactive lead compound contributing a wide range of screening for the discovery of anticancer compounds. The lead compounds have unfurled an extensive array of pharmacological properties owing to the presence of polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenoids and other secondary metabolites. The antioxidant, immunomodulatory and anti-tumor activities exhibited, are possibly regulated by the apoptosis induction, scavenging of ROS and modulation of cellular signaling pathways to defy the cellula

Retention and distribution of methylmercury administered in the food in marine invertebrates: Effect of dietary selenium.

Methylmercury is transported along aquatic food chains from the lower trophic levels and selenium modulates the biokinetics of mercury in organisms in complex ways. We investigated the retention of orally administered methylmercury in various marine invertebrates and the effect of selenium hereon. Shrimps (Palaemon adpersus and P. elegans), blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) and sea stars (Asterias rubens) eliminated methylmercury slowly (t½ = ½ to >1 year) and the copepod (Acartia tonsa) faster (t½ ∼ 12-24 h). Orally administered selenite augmented elimination of met

Characterization of the Mollusc RIG-I/MAVS Pathway Reveals an Archaic Antiviral Signalling Framework in Invertebrates.

Despite the mitochondrial antiviral signalling protein (MAVS)-dependent RIG-I-like receptor (RLR) signalling pathway in the cytosol plays an indispensable role in the antiviral immunity of the host, surprising little is known in invertebrates. Here we characterized the major members of RLR pathway and investigated their signal transduction a Molluscs. We show that genes involved in RLR pathway were significantly induced during virus challenge, including CgRIG-I-1, CgMAVS, CgTRAF6 (TNF receptor-associated factor 6), and CgIRFs (interferon regulatory factors. Similar to human RIG-I, oyster RIG-I

Effects of a reservoir flushing on trace metal partitioning, speciation and benthic invertebrates in the floodplain.

Elimination of sediments from river reservoirs is a common management problem for hydroelectric power plants. Periodical flushing can have negative impacts downstream. This study investigated the impact of a flushing event on the physico-chemical changes in the downstream sections and on the consequences for the benthic macroinvertebrate community. A special emphasis was placed on trace metal fate, partitioning and speciation. The assessment of taxonomic diversity and the frequency of taxa with specific traits was used to estimate the impact on the macroinvertebrate community. Trace metals wer

Factors controlling the bioaccumulation of mercury, methylmercury, arsenic, selenium, and cadmium by freshwater invertebrates and fish.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg), methylmercury (MMHg), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), and cadmium (Cd) were measured in atmospheric deposition, stream water, and biota in two streams in western Maryland. Overall, concentrations were slightly higher in the water of the lower pH Herrington Creek tributary (HRCT). Bioaccumulation factors were also higher for HRCT compared to Blacklick Run (BLK). MMHg concentrations in biota increased with trophic level and essentially all the Hg was as MMHg in predatory insects and insectivorous/carnivorous fish. Thus, the overall trophic status of the organism was

Evolutionary insights into gut acidification: invertebrate-like mechanisms in the basal vertebrate hagfish.

Acidification is a key component of digestion throughout metazoans. The gut digestive fluid of many invertebrates is acidified by the vesicular-type H+-ATPase (VHA). In contrast, vertebrates generate acidic gut fluids using the gastric H+/K+-ATPase (HKA), an evolutionary innovation linked with the appearance of a true stomach that greatly improves digestion, absorption and immune function. Hagfishes are the most basal extant vertebrates, and their mechanism of digestive acidification remains unclear. Herein, we report that the stomachless Pacific hagfish (Eptatretus stoutii) acidify their gut

Drivers of plant-associated invertebrate community structure in West-European coastal dunes.

The organisation of species assemblages is affected by environmental factors acting at different spatial scales. To understand the drivers behind the community structure of invertebrates associated with marram grass -a dune-building ecosystem engineer -, we set up a stratified sampling scheme in six biogeographic sectors along the North Sea. We tested to which degree invertebrate species composition is affected by the spatial organisation of marram grass tussocks. Using distance-based RDA and a joint species distribution modelling approach, we show biogeography to be the most important driver,
