The goal of this study is to understand how different admission statuses of varying degrees of restrictiveness (informal, voluntary, emergency admission, and involuntary admission on medical certification) are used in the psychiatric emergency room. The study included 656 consecutively admitted patients from a psychiatric emergency room over 28 months. Data were analyzed univariately and using two discriminant function models. Only six (0.9%) patients were informal admissions. Voluntary admissions (24.9%, n = 163) tended to be for patients with affective disorders, those who were self-referred

The procedure of involuntary hospitalization in France has been recently modified by the law of 5 July 2011. Since that time, a liberty and custody judge has been appointed to guarantee the rights of psychiatric inpatients and to prevent abusive hospitalizations. Currently, for one involuntary hospitalization in ten a release is decided by the liberty and custody judge although psychiatrists consider that psychiatric care is necessary. In order to improve our understanding of the role of liberty and custody judges, and how they make their decisions, we conducted a qualitative survey of liberty

A 43 year old man suffered from the involuntary movements since 10-th year of age. Those movements, initially mild, have progressed in the course of the disease. In the neurological examination the dystonic involuntary movements of the neck, trunk and limbs, more expressed on the right side, were observed. The laboratory findings were normal, except the level of dopamine beta-hydroxylase, which was increased. Similar results were observed also in the closest relatives of our patient. After the treatment with high doses of L-Dopa we achieved a considerable decrease of the symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Painful limbs/moving extremities is a relatively rare condition characterized by aching pain in one limb and involuntary movement in the affected fingers or toes. Its pathomechanism is unknown. We report two patients with painful limbs/moving extremities. In one patient with a painful arm and moving fingers, the symptoms were resolved after surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Patient 1 was a 36-year-old man with a painful arm and moving fingers. Treatment with administration of analgesics was not effective. Postmyelographic CT showed stenosis of the right C5/C6 foramen attributable to cer

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To explore therapists' discourses on treatment processes, when working with pregnant substance abusers in voluntary and coercive treatment, and looking for the clinical implications of these discourses.
BACKGROUND: Treatment of substance use disorder faces many challenges. One is pregnancy and motherhood, which are vulnerable and complex processes. The literature emphasises lack of optimal and knowledge-based treatment for this group.
DESIGN: The study follows a Foucauldian inspired discourse analysis.
METHOD: Forty therapists from four different residential units in No

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of botulinum toxin type A (BTA) injection into the salivary gland and to evaluate the changes of drooling in varied postures in tetraplegic patients with brain injury.
METHODS: Eight tetraplegic patients with brain injury were enrolled. BTA was injected into each parotid and submandibular gland of both sides under ultrasonographic guidance. Drooling was measured by a questionnaire-based scoring system for drooling severity and frequency, and the sialorrhea was measured by a modified Schirmer test for the patients before the injection, 3 weeks and 3 months

PURPOSE: Involuntary movement is a rare symptom of moyamoya disease (MMD). No consensus has been reached regarding its clinical features and pathogenetic mechanism. Therefore, pediatric MMD patients presenting with involuntary movement were retrospectively analyzed, focusing on the image findings.
METHODS: A total of 513 patients who were treated for MMD were reviewed. After exclusion of MMD syndromes and those with accompanying conditions related to involuntary movements, five patients (mean age: 11.6 years, range: 5-13 years) were evaluated.
RESULTS: All of the patients improved their symp

We reviewed 115 incontinent women undergoing conservative treatment. Urinary incontinence was caused by pelvic floor weakness (genuine stress incontinence) in 54 patients, by involuntary detrusor contraction (detrusor instability) in 38 and by both (mixed type) in 23. Tricyclic antidepressants or alpha-adrenergic stimulators were given to 30 patients with pelvic floor weakness; Incontinence disappeared in 4 patients (13%) and was improved in other 3 patients (10%). Twenty-two patients with pelvic floor weakness underwent pelvic floor exercise with or without medication; Incontinence disappeare

BACKGROUND: Transient myoclonic involuntary movements, typically referred to as spinal myoclonus (SM), rarely develop in the extremities following neuraxial anesthesia (NA). NA indications in patients with history of SM following NA (SM-NA) are unknown.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old woman developed SM-NA after elective cesarean section (CS). Approximately 130 min after spinal anesthesia induction, she began exhibiting involuntary movements, which became most severe after approximately 3 h. The involuntary movements gradually decreased without treatments and disappeared after approximately

According to Swedish legislation (LVM) compulsory treatment shall be decided on if someone, due to ongoing abuse of alcohol, drugs or volatile solvents, is in need of care to overcome abuse and if a voluntary intervention is not possible. Very little research has been conducted in Sweden on this particular legislation with regard to the clients' experiences of entire process from assessment to aftercare. We interviewed 74 subjects who were being assessed prior to the court's decision on involuntary care (n=39), or with previous experience of assessment and involuntary care (n=35). The assessme

Belly dancer dyskinesia (BDD) is a rare neurological disorder characterised by repetitive, involuntary contractions of the abdominal muscles. Diagnosis can be challenging, as investigations often fail to reveal an underlying cause. We report the case of an 18-year-old female who presented with sudden-onset, involuntary abdominal contractions. Investigations, including blood tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and spine, were unremarkable. Initial treatment with diazepam partially reduced her symptoms, while clonazepam resulted in significant improvement and sustained contro

Tremor is a rhythmic, involuntary muscular contraction with consistency of rate, amplitude and pattern. It is the most common of all involuntary movements. Several systems for classifying tremor exist with the most frequent system classed according to behavioral context, ie, resting, postural and action. Clinical recognition of tremor type is extremely important as type determines prognosis, treatment and need for genetic counseling. The most common forms are parkinsonian, physiological, cerebellar intention and essential tremor. Essential or hereditary tremor is the most common of all neurolo

PURPOSE: We evaluated the differences between patients with overactive bladder (OAB) who felt involuntary detrusor contractions during cystometry (detrusor overactivity [DO]) and those who did not feel them.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prospectively studied 45 patients with symptoms of nonneurogenic, nonobstructed overactive bladder and with DO on cystometry. All patients underwent videourodynamics, the ice water test and electrical perception threshold determination. Continence, urodynamic parameters, data from specific sensory evaluation and outcome of drug treatment were examined.

This study aimed to determine the long-term quality of life (QoL) in hemifacial spasm (HFS) patients after treating with Abo-botulinum toxin A (Abo-BTX). The study assessed the disease-specific QoL (hemifacial spasm questionnaire 30 items; HFS 30), the involuntary movements (abnormal involuntary movement scale; AIMS), general health QoL (Medical Outcomes 36-Item Short Form Health Survey; SF-36), and Depression (the Center of Epidemiologic Studies-Depression questionnaire; CES-D). A total of 74 HFS patients were enrolled from 2012 to 2017. The disease-specific QoL; involuntary movements; and th

A classification of child dystonias is proposed as a guide to etiological diagnosis. The analysis of symptoms and signs provides a distinction between dystonia and other involuntary movements: dystonia is a tonic involuntary movement which appears during voluntary activity as a slow and involuntary movement. Two groups of child dystonic syndromes can be distinguished: 1) dystonic syndromes where dystonia is the main neurologic abnormality; they result mainly from toxic and anoxic disorders and from torsion dystonia; 2) dystonic syndromes with associated dystonia and intellectual impairment; th

Levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID) is a complication that occurs in many patients with Parkinson's disease. (-)-OSU6162 is a clinically tolerable dopamine stabilizer with affinity for both dopaminergic D2 receptors and serotonergic 5-HT2A receptors which has been shown to counteract LID in non-human primates. To investigate whether (-)-OSU6162 can dampen levodopa-induced abnormal involuntary movements in the unilateral 6-OHDA rat model of Parkinson's disease without impairing levodopa-induced improvement in motor functioning, female Sprague Dawley rats received complete unilateral lesioning of
