BACKGROUND: Micro-focused ultrasound (MFUS) converts the mechanical energy of high-frequency vibrations into thermal energy and induces collagen remodeling through thermal effects to achieve skin tightening and lifting. However, when employed for periocular skin treatment, MFUS carries a potential risk of ocular injury, which deserves high attention from cosmetic surgeons.
AIMS: This article reports a case of a young female patient who developed transient visual acuity decline with iridocyclitis and residual corneal leukoma after MFUS treatment on the periocular skin.

Chronic iridocyclitis (CI) may complicate juvenile chronic arthritis (JCA) and if left untreated may cause significant ocular impairment. It is usually not symptomatic and diagnosis relies on slit lamp biomicroscopy. It is unclear how often children with JCA should be screened for this complication. From a review of the literature, the following recommendations could be made, although these require scientific validation. The life-long persistence of human herpes viruses is well known (HSV 1 and 2, VZV, CMV, EBV). For the HHV-6 we have described here for the first time the onset/reactivation of juvenile chronic arthritis (jcA) and chronic iridocyclitis as chronically active and persistent infection in two children of school age.

METHODS: Aqueous humor was analysed by multiplex PCR to detect viral DNA, and real-time PCR was used to evaluate virus copies before and after anti-virus treatments. Inflammation of the anterior chamber was evaluated by a laser flare photometry.
