This study examined the effects of ischemic preconditioning (IP) on the ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) induced injury in normal and hypertrophied hearts. Cardiac hypertrophy in rabbits was induced by L-thyroxine (0.5 mg/kg/day for 16 days). Hearts with or without IP (3 cycles of 5 min ischemia and 10 min reperfusion) were subjected to I/R (60 min ischemia followed by 60 min reperfusion). IP reduced the I/R-induced infarct size from 68% to 24% and 57% to 33% in the normal and hypertrophied hearts, respectively. Leakage of creatine phosphokinase in the perfusate from the hypertrophied hearts due to

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of splenic ischemic preconditioning (sIPC) on oxidative stress induced by hepatic ischemia-reperfusion in rats.
METHODS: Fifteen male Wistar rats were equally divided into 3 groups: SHAM, IRI and sIPC. Animals from IRI group were subjected to 45 minutes of partial liver ischemia (70%). In the sIPC group, splenic artery was clamped in 2 cycles of 5 min of ischemia and 5 min of reperfusion (20 min total) prior to hepatic ischemia. SHAM group underwent the same surgical procedures as in the remaining groups, but no liver ischemia or sIPC were induced. After 1h, h

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is an endogenous protection strategy against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) released from the myocardium subjected to brief periods of ischemia confers cardioprotection. We hypothesized that MIF plays an essential role in IPC-induced cardioprotection. I/R was induced either ex vivo or in vivo in male wild-type (WT) and MIF knockout (MIFKO) mice with or without proceeding IPC (three cycles of 5-min ischemia and 5-min reperfusion). Indices of myocardial injury, regional inflammation and cardiac function we

BACKGROUND: The effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) on coronary flow in elderly cardiac patients has not been investigated yet. Thus, we aimed to study the change of coronary flow subsequent to RIPC in old patients with heart diseases and to identify its main correlates.
METHODS: Ninety-five elderly patients (aged ≥ 65 years) accessing cardiac rehabilitation ward underwent transthoracic ultrasound evaluation of peak diastolic flow velocity of left anterior descending artery. Measurements of coronary flow velocity were performed on baseline and after an RIPC protocol (three cycles

Cardioprotective efficacy of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) remains controversial. Experimental studies investigating RIPC have largely monitored cardiovascular changes during index ischemia and reperfusion with little work investigating changes during RIPC application. This work aims to identify cardiovascular changes associated with autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity during RIPC and prior to index ischemia. RIPC was induced in anesthetized male C57/Bl6 mice by four cycles of 5 min of hindlimb ischemia using inflated cuff (200 mmHg) followed by 5 min reperfusion. Electrocardiogra

BACKGROUND: Although remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) has emerged as an attractive strategy to reduce cardiac injury in patients undergoing diverse cardiac surgical procedures, it is unclear whether RIPC has protective effects in patients undergoing aortic valve replacement surgery without coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).
METHODS: Hence, 100 adult patients undergoing elective aortic valve replacement for aortic valve stenosis, without combined surgery with CABG, were prospectively randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to either the RIPC group or the control group. The RIPC group under

BACKGROUND: We assessed whether remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) improves myocardial, renal, and lung protection after on-pump coronary surgery.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a single-center, prospective, randomized (1:1), placebo-controlled trial. Patients, investigators, anesthetists, surgeons, and critical care teams were blinded to group allocation. Subjects received RIPC (or placebo) stimuli (×3 upper limb (or dummy arm), 5-minute cycles of 200 mm Hg cuff inflation/deflation) before aortic clamping. Anesthesia, perfusion, cardioplegia, and surgical techniques were standardized. The

BACKGROUND: Restoration of blood supply to an organ after a critical period of ischemia results in parenchymal injury and dysfunction of the organ referred to as reperfusion injury. Ischemia reperfusion injury is often seen in organ transplants, major organ resections and in shock. Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) is an adaptational response of briefly ischemic tissues which serves to protect against subsequent prolonged ischemic insults and reperfusion injury. Ischemic preconditioning can be mechanical or pharmacological. Direct mechanical preconditioning in which the target organ is exposed to

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) and intermittent vascular control (IVC) have been shown to reduce the number of ischemia/reperfusion injuries during liver resections with the Pringle maneuver. Our study aimed to compare the beneficial effect of these two modalities in relation to the duration of normothermic liver ischemia. A group of 24 Landrace pigs with a mean body weight of 25 to 30 kg were subjected to extended liver resection of more than 65%. Although, 12 animals underwent IPC (10 minutes of ischemia and 10 minutes of reperfusion), and subsequently the Pringle maneuver was applied for 90

OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed to test the hypothesis that the combination of heat stress and early ischemic preconditioning (IP) applied before aortic occlusion would be protective against spinal cord ischemic injury.
METHODS: Thirty Whister-Albino rats were randomly divided into three groups. In group 1 (n=10), aorta was clamped just distal to the left renal artery and above the iliac bifurcation for 45 min. Group 2 (n=10) had 5 min of transient aortic occlusion and 30 min later underwent an additional 45 min. In group 3 (n=10), animals were heated to 41 degrees C and maintained at this te

OBJECTIVE: Ischemic preconditioning has been found to protect various organs from a subsequent longer ischemic insult. We investigated whether the late phase of ischemic preconditioning reduces spinal cord injury from occlusion of the descending thoracic aorta.
METHODS: Twenty-four pigs (27 to 30 kg) were randomly divided in four groups: group I (n = 4) underwent a sham operation, group II (n = 4) underwent aortic occlusion for 20 minutes, group III (n = 8) underwent aortic occlusion for 35 minutes, and group IV (n = 8) underwent aortic occlusion for 20 minutes and, 48 hours later, aortic occ

Ischemic preconditioning is a protective endogenous mechanism to reduce ischemia/reperfusion injury and is defined as a brief period of ischemia the authors term "preclamping." This is followed by tissue reperfusion and is believed to increase the ischemic tolerance. The objective of this study was to determine whether acute remote ischemic preconditioning, which has been reported to be successful for other organs, such as the heart, kidney, intestine, and liver, will also result in an enhancement of survival in flaps, and whether remote ischemic preconditioning is as effective as preclamping.

Pharmacologic inhibition of the K(ATP) channel with sulfonylureas or the adenosine receptor with methylxanthines has been shown to attenuate ischemic preconditioning (IPC). Both classes of compounds are widely used clinically, and several reports have demonstrated adverse outcomes in patients taking sulfonylureas. Recently inhibition of the sodium/hydrogen exchanger isozyme-1 (NHE-1) has been shown to be equal to IPC at providing myocardial protection in dogs and may be an alternative to IPC in patients taking sulfonylureas or methylxanthines. However, no experiments have examined the pharmaco

Ischemic preconditioning (IP) reduces brain damage after subsequent ischemic strokes by activating endogenous protective mechanisms in rodents. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) induces tolerance in the human brain after ischemic strokes; defining mechanisms of IP effects may provide therapeutic targets to improve recovery of patients with ischemic strokes. Iron transported across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) is required for brain functions, including myelination, and its levels should be finely regulated to avoid harmful effects. This study aimed to determine whether IP enhances repair process

p63 is a transcription factor of p53 gene family, which are involved in development, differentiation and cell response to stress; however, its roles in ischemic preconditioning (IPC) in the brain are not clear. In the present study, we investigated the effect of IPC on p63 immunoreactivity caused by 5 min of transient cerebral ischemia in gerbils. IPC was induced by subjecting the gerbils to 2 min of transie ischemia 1 day prior to 5 min of transient ischemia. The animals were randomly assigned to four groups (sham-operated-group, ischemia-operated-group, IPC plus (+)-sham-operated-group and I

Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide. Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is defined as transient brain ischemia with temporary neurological deficits. In animal models, prior TIA seems to enhance brain ischemic tolerance to withstand further ischemic events, which might be explained by brain preconditioning. Thus, this review aims to formulate evidence of whether TIAs can induce positive preconditioning and enhance the functional outcomes in patients suffering from subsequent ischemic strokes. Five databases were searched (PubMed, Embase, SAGE, Web of Science, and Scopus

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence suggests that acupuncture may serve as a potent strategy to mitigate the deleterious effects of ischemic stroke on neural tissue. The present investigation delineated the neuroprotective potential of electroacupuncture (EA) administered pre-and post-stroke, with a focus on determining the commonalities and disparities between these two therapeutic approaches in ameliorating ischemic stroke-induced brain injury. The ultimate objective is to inform optimal timing for acupuncture intervention in the clinical management and prevention of stroke.

The adverse impact of common diseases like diabetes mellitus and acute hyperglycemia on morbidity and mortality from myocardial infarction (MI) has been well documented over the past years of research. In the clinical setting, the relationship between blood glucose and mortality appears linear, with amplifying risk associated with increasing blood glucose levels. Further, this seems to be independent of a diagnosis of diabetes. In the experimental setting, various comorbidities seem to impact ischemic and pharmacological conditioning strategies, protecting the heart against ischemia and reperf

Remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) is a cardioprotective strategy against myocardial damage by ischemia-reperfusion. Many in-vivo and ex-vivo animal researches have demonstrated that RIPC decreases significantly the ischemia-reperfusion myocardial damage, by up to 58% in isolated rat heart. Cardiac artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is a clinical model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion and a clinical potential application to RIPC. However, although RIPC has shown successful results in experimental studies, clinical trials on CABG have failed to demonstrate a benefit of RIPC in humans. Str
