Workplace Disclosure of Serious Mental Illness and Gainful Employment: Theory and Evidence.

BACKGROUND: This study provides the first systematic analysis of the association between workplace disclosure of serious mental illness (SMI) and the probability of gainful employment, among workers employed in regular jobs. By regular job, we mean one that pays at least minimum wage, is not set aside for persons with disabilities, and was not obtained with assistance of mental health services. By gainful employment, we mean a regular job with monthly earnings that exceed the maximum allowable earned income for receipt of Social Security Disability Insurance. AIMS: Among persons with SMI who

Exploring staff experiences: A case for redesigning the response to aggression and violence in the emergency department.

INTRODUCTION: A Code Black is the coordinated response by healthcare staff and security to an act or threat of verbal and physical aggression or violence perpetrated by a patient, family member or visitor towards healthcare staff within a hospital setting. Behavioural disturbance is often verbally de-escalated by staff. However, as a last resort physical and/or chemical restraint may be necessary. Reports show that there is an increasing number of violent incidents in Emergency Departments (ED), emphasising the importance of staff training for Code Black events. This research examines the resp

Do any kinds of perceived stressors lead to hypertension? A longitudinal cohort study.

Stress has been suggested as a contributing factor in the etiology and progression of hypertension in prior investigations. For a more comprehensive understanding of this concept, in this study, we aim to evaluate different domains of perceived stress and their possible contribution to the development of hypertension (HTN). This is a secondary analysis of the Isfahan Cohort Study (ICS). We used data from 2007 and 2013. The 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and Stressful Life Events Questionnaire (SLEQ) were used to evaluate psychological distress and perceived stress in subjects, a

"It Comes in Steps and Stages": Experiences of People Living with HIV in Achieving Employment.

People living with HIV who are seeking jobs experience unique barriers to obtaining employment at the individual, group, and community levels. Traditional employment assistance programs can provide support but may not be tailored to some people living with HIV who often experience barriers to work related to their social needs (such as housing instability) or their lack of consistent engagement in the workforce. To understand how people living with HIV return to work, in-depth interviews were conducted with 43 participants enrolled in interventions coordinating HIV care with housing and employ

Precarious employment, strenuous working conditions and the long-term risk of diagnosed chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effect of precarious employment (PE) on the risk of diagnosed chronic musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) among Swedish workers in occupations with strenuous working conditions. METHODS: This nationwide register-based cohort study included workers registered as living in Sweden in 2005, aged 21-60 at the 2010 baseline. Three samples were included: workers with high biomechanical workload (n=680 841), repetitive work (n=659 422) or low job control (n=703 645). PE was evaluated using the SWE-ROPE (2.0) construct, which includes: contractual insecurity, temporariness,

Longitudinal assessment of daily activity patterns on weight change after involuntary job loss: the ADAPT study protocol.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has identified obesity as one of the most visible and neglected public health problems worldwide. Meta-analytic studies suggest that insufficient sleep increases the risk of developing obesity and related serious medical conditions. Unfortunately, the nationwide average sleep duration has steadily declined over the last two decades with 25% of U.S. adults reporting insufficient sleep. Stress is also an important indirect factor in obesity, and chronic stress and laboratory-induced stress negatively impact sleep. Despite what we know from basic sciences

The Experiences of Registered Nurses Who are Injured by Interpersonal Violence While on Duty in an Emergency Department.

A successful career as an emergency department registered nurse (RN) requires the ability to respond quickly to a wide variety of potentially life-threatening illnesses and injuries. The unpredictable nature of this work can evoke emotional and physical stress on the RN beyond that which might be experienced by nurses who work in more stable, controlled, and predictable environments. Emergency healthcare is predicated on unexpected illness or injury leading to unscheduled episodic work. Additional stress is placed on the RN by the potential for violence that occurs in emergency departments. Th

Mental health and hostility as predictors of temporary employment: evidence from two prospective studies.

We used two studies to examine whether mental health and hostility predicted temporary employment. Study 1 involved a cohort of 970 Finnish hospital employees (102 men, 868 women) who had temporary job contracts at baseline. After adjustment for demographics, organisational tenure and part-time work status, doctor-diagnosed psychiatric disorder predicted continuing in temporary employment instead of receiving a permanent job by the end of the 2-year follow-up. A higher level of hostility was also associated with temporary employment, but only among employees in low socioeconomic positions. In

Is it time to address survivorship in advanced breast cancer? A review article.

The outcome of advanced breast cancer has significantly improved over recent decades. As a consequence, the complex needs of patients living with the disease and their care-givers should be addressed not only in terms of supportive and palliative care but also of "survivorship" requirements. The multidisciplinary approach to advanced breast cancer should encompass - early in the history of the disease - not only physical but also functional, social, psychological and spiritual domains. It is important to clearly define the disease context with patients and families ("chronic" preferred to "inc
