Infectious keratoconjunctivitis in free-ranging mule deer in Wyoming: a retrospective study and identification of a novel alphaherpesvirus.

We describe the clinicopathologic findings, relative prevalence, and pathogens associated with infectious keratoconjunctivitis in mule deer ( Odocoileus hemionus) in Wyoming. Seventeen cases with ocular lesions were identified among 1,036 mule deer postmortem submissions (1.6%) in an ~16 y period. Sixteen cases were observed in winter and most were in male (15 cases) and juvenile (13 cases) deer. Blindness was the most commonly reported clinical sign (10 cases). A herpesvirus was detected only in the 4 cases of bilateral necrotizing bulbar conjunctivitis. Phylogenetic analysis of glycoprotein

Assessment of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus 109J killing of Moraxella bovis in an in vitro model of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

The objective of this study was to determine the potential of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus 109J as an alternative non-chemotherapeutic treatment of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK). To accomplish this, various parameters of B. bacteriovorus predation of Moraxella bovis were determined in vitro. Initial passage of B. bacteriovorus using M. bovis as prey required 10 d for active cultures to develop compared with 2 d for culture on normal Escherichia coli prey; however by the 5th passage, time to active predatory morphology was reduced to 2 d. This high passage B. bacteriovorus culture

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: bacteriologic, immunologic, and clinical responses of cattle to experimental exposure with Moraxella bovis.

The bacteriologic, immunologic, and clinical responses of 3- to 4-month old Holstein-Friesian calves to experimental exposure with Moraxella bovis type 10900 has been investigated. After u.v. radiation and intraconjunctival exposure with 1.9 X 10(7) microorganisms, each eye of 16 calves exhibited signs of blepharospasm, photophobia, and increased lacrimation. Bacteria were recovered from exposed eyes for 2-7 consecutive weeks before maximal clinical response occurred. The severity of the cases varied from eyes that exhibited mild signs to severe clinical cases with profuse lacrimation, conjunc

Bovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis: carrier state of Moraxella bovis and the development of preventive measures against disease.

Bovine infectious keratoconjunctivitis, which is caused by Moraxella bovis, occurs perennially in all cattle-raising areas. Disease may occur any time during the year but manifests itself often during summer when disease-enhancing factors such as ultraviolet radiation and fly population are increased. Although some recent research findings indicate that cattle can be immunized against the disease, many problems have to be overcome before the cattle industry can benefit from such immunization. Some pressing problems relate to lack of cross-protection between vaccines of different strains of M b

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis epizootic associated with area-wide emergence of a new Moraxella bovis pilus type.

Pilus-mediated adherence is a virulence attribute of Moraxella bovis. Several pilus types have been shown to exist among strains of this bacterium, but correlation between pilus type and specific field cases of the disease has not been done. During the summer of 1987, an epizootic of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis was reported in 7 Iowa counties. Eight isolates of M bovis were secured from 12 episodes studied. All 8 of the isolates were nearly homogeneous in biochemical properties and had the same plasmid biotype. Pilus typing performed by immunofluorescence and immunogold electron mic

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: enhancement of Moraxella bovis pili immunogenicity with diphtheria-tetanus toxoids and pertussis vaccine.

A study was conducted to determine whether diphtheria-tetanus-toxoids and pertussis vaccine (DPT) would enhance the immunogenicity of homologous Moraxella bovis pili fractions. Thirty-six calves were divided into 4 groups (I, II, III, and IV) of 9 calves each. Calves in group I were not vaccinated and served as controls. Calves in group II were vaccinated with pili fractions only. Calves in group III were vaccinated with DPT only. Calves in group IV were vaccinated with DPT and pili. Vaccination consisted of 2 inoculations, 21 days apart. Fourteen days after the last vaccinal inoculation was d

Genomic characterization of Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi Uruguayan strains isolated from calves with infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) is an ocular disease that affects bovines and has significant economic and health effects worldwide. Gram negative bacteria Moraxella bovis and Moraxella bovoculi are its main etiological agents. Antimicrobial therapy against IBK is often difficult in beef and dairy herds and, although vaccines are commercially available, their efficacy is variable and dependent on local strains. The aim of this study was to analyze for the first time the genomes of Uruguayan clinical isolates of M. bovis and M. bovoculi. The genomes were de novo assembled and annot

Herding conditions related to infectious keratoconjunctivitis in semi-domesticated reindeer: a questionnaire-based survey among reindeer herders.

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratoconjunctivitis (IKC) in Eurasian semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) is a multifactorial disease, associated to infectious agents such as Cervid herpesvirus 2 (CvHV2) and various species of bacteria, but environmental factors may also be necessary to initiate the disease. Little effort seems to have been invested in addressing the herder`s experience with this disease. An information letter with a link to an online questionnaire was sent to 410 herding community representatives in Norway and Sweden. RESULTS: Sixty-three herders responded, 76 %

Randomized blinded challenge study to assess association between Moraxella bovoculi and Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis in dairy calves.

The objective of this study was to evaluate if Moraxella bovoculi was associated with Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) using a corneal scarification model in calves. A 3-arm single-eye block-randomized and blinded challenge study was designed as follows: corneal scarification only, corneal scarification and inoculation with M. bovoculi (ATCC strain: BAA-1259; origin: CA) and corneal scarification and inoculation with Moraxella bovis (strain Epp63-300; origin: NADC). The study was conducted in 3 replicates of 10-12 animals housed in individual pens with no nose-to-nose contact. Calv

Experimentally induced infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis: resistance of vaccinated cattle to homologous and heterologous strains of Moraxella bovis.

In studies to determine whether vaccination with one strain of Moraxella bovis would protect against challenge with virulent homologous or heterologous strains, calves were intramuscularly inoculated 3 times with formalin-killed M bovis, with 14 days between inoculations. Fourteen days after the 3rd vaccinal dose was given, all calves were exposed to homologous or heterologous virulent cultures of M bovis. The results indicated that vaccination with one strain of M bovis may induce protective immunity against homologous and heterologous challenge exposure; however, because vaccinated cattle re

Moraxella tarda sp. nov., a Novel Species Isolated from Nasal Cavity of Cattle with Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis.

A novel bacterial species was isolated from the nasal mucosa of Hereford cattle exhibiting early clinical signs of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis on a beef cattle farm in the Pampa biome, southern Brazil, in 2018. Cells were Gram-stain-negative cocci and exhibited slow growth under standard laboratory conditions, with optimal growth at 35 °C, pH 7.5, and 1.0% NaCl. The draft genome comprised approximately 1.86 Mbp (GenBank accession number GCF_035181365.1). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16 S rRNA gene sequence showed that the closest relative was arMoraxella nasibovis, with 97.9%

Identification of Polysialic Acid and Chondroitin-like Polysaccharides of Moraxella bovis Strains Associated with Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis.

Moraxella bovis is a major etiologic agent for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), commonly known as bovine pink eye. IBK has been a major economic burden to the cattle and dairy industries due to its economic and welfare impacts on affected cattle herds. Antimicrobial treatment of acute IBK infections is often challenging. Vaccine formulations widely used in industry have poor efficacy for the prevention of IBK. Capsular polysaccharides of some bacterial pathogens are important epidemiological markers and are successfully used in vaccines for humans. Currently, there are limited dat

Complete Genome Sequence of Moraxella bovis Strain Epp-63 (300), an Etiologic Agent of Infectious Bovine Keratoconjunctivitis.

We report here the complete closed genome sequence of Moraxella bovis strain Epp-63 (300) (Epp63). This strain was isolated from an infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) case in 1963. Since then, Epp63 has been used extensively for IBK research. Consequently, the genome sequence of Epp63 should help elucidate IBK host-pathogen interactions.
