INTRODUCTION: Glomerular diseases can be associated with solid or hematopoietic malignancies. The prevalence of these associations varies according to the studied glomerular disease. This study aimed to evaluate the frequency and type of neoplasms in patients with glomerular diseases as well as their clinical, laboratory, and histopathological features and the relationship with immunosuppressive therapy.
METHODS: This was a retrospective, descriptive, observational, longitudinal study that reviewed 4,820 medical records and included 95 patients with glomerular disease and neoplasms. Demograph

Compared with cancers of other organs, precursor lesions of renal cell neoplasms are rarely discussed. However, there are specific scenarios where cysts or microscopic solid lesions are thought to precede tumor formation. In 2024, the International Society of Urological Pathology (ISUP) held a consensus meeting on precursor lesions of urologic neoplasms in Florence, Italy. This report details the findings of Working Group 3-Precursor Lesions of the Kidney. Papillary adenoma is likely the best-established precursor lesion in the kidney, thought to be an incipient form of papillary renal cell ca

Castleman disease is an uncommon lymphoproliferative disorder that usually involves lymph nodes but can rarely present in extranodal sites. We describe an unusual case of Castleman disease exclusively involving the kidney. The authors also briefly discuss previously documented clinicopathological and radiological characteristics associated with Castleman disease of the kidney. We report a case of a 57-year-old female who presented with persistent abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a 1.8-cm nodule in the upper pole of the left kidney with no evidence of systemic lymphadenopathy. A nephrectomy was

Trisomy 18 is associated with several congenital malformations, including horseshoe kidney. It can be full, partial, or mosaic, and mosaicism is often associated with lesser severity and longer life expectancy, placing patients at greater risk of developing neoplasms or malignancies. One common tumor among children with Trisomy 18 is Wilms tumor, which is also associated with renal congenital abnormalities such as horseshoe kidney. We present a case describing the occurrence of these three characteristics: development of Wilms tumor in a patient with Trisomy 18 and a horseshoe kidney and discu

In renal transplant patients, an increased risk of cancer has been seen, higher than in the general population, and the more frequent genitourinary neoplasms are the kidney and bladder ones. Moreover, in those patients the pattern of tumor growth is very rapid, with early tendency to local and systemic dissemination. The case here presented, a patient with kidney transplant 3 years before, with high grade, superficial transitional cell carcinoma involving the whole bladder, the pelvis and the ureter of the right native kidney, shown this fast progression. Four months after radical cystectomy p

Renal medullary carcinoma (RMC) is a rare neoplasm of the kidney that has been recently described. It is almost exclusive to young patients of African descent and associated with sickle cell hemoglobinopathy, mainly sickle cell trait and hemoglobin sickle cell disease. The prognosis of RMC is very poor because of the highly aggressive behavior of this neoplasm and its resistance to conventional chemotherapy. Metastatic disease is almost universal at the time of presentation, and the malignancy is minimally responsive to a variety of regimens and/or modalities, including surgery, radiotherapy,

We report an unusual supraglottic carcinoma metastasis to the penis. Review of the literature revealed more than 300 cases of metastatic lesions to the penis, excluding primary neoplasms from skin, urethra and blood. Of these metastatic neoplasms 16 originated above the diaphragm, only 4 of which were from the head and neck region. The most common neoplastic metastases to the penis in order of frequency were from the bladder, prostate, rectum and rectosigmoid areas, and kidney in 32, 30, 13 and 8% of the cases, respectively. The incidence of other primary tumor sites that metastasize to the pe

BACKGROUND: Periampullary neoplasms include carcinomas of the duodenum, ampulla of Vater, distal common bile duct, and pancreas. The aggressive course of these neoplasms is attributable to the delay in diagnosis, as patients have no symptoms until advanced stages of the disease. More than half of patients have distant metastasis at the time of diagnosis. The most frequent sites of metastasis are the liver, lymph nodes, peritoneum, lung, bone, kidney, and, rarely the skin.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 45-year-old female patient with adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater metastasizing

Oncocytic lesions may be metaplastic, hyperplastic, or neoplastic and occur in a variety of tissues, including those of the ocular adnexa. Oncocytes are enlarged epithelial cells with abundant eosinophilic granules in the cytoplasm, which represent large mitochondria with distorted cristae. The causes of oncocytic lesions remain uncertain, although in some sites such as the lacrimal sac, chronic inflammation may be a factor. Oncocytic neoplasms in all adnexal sites are generally benign (oncocytoma/oncocytic adenoma) and oncocytic adenocarcinomas are uncommon. Research into oncocytic neoplasms,

BACKGROUND: Excess risks of several second neoplasms following breast cancer have been reported. However, these risks have still to be quantified.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We considered 9,729 breast cancer patients registered by the Swiss Cancer Registries of Vaud and Neuchâtel (covering about 786,000 inhabitants) and followed up from 1974 to 1998.
RESULTS: Overall, 443 second primary neoplasms (other than second primary breast cancers) were observed versus 389 expected [standardised incidence ratio (SIR): 1.14; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-1.25]. The SIRs were above unity for endometrium

Although lymphnode dissection (LND) provides staging and therapeutic benefit in bladder cancer, the role of lymphadenectomy in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and urothelial cancer of the upper urinary tract (UCUUT) remains undefined. The aim of this paper was to examine the staging and therapeutic role of LND in RCC and UCUUT with emphasis on applicability to modern minimally invasive approaches. A Pubmed search was conducted to identify literature published between January 1, 2008 and March 11, 2013 addressing the role of lymphadenectomy in renal and upper urinary tract cancer. Key words included

Lymphoplasmacytic neoplasms cause a wide range of injuries to the kidney exemplified by light chain cast nephropathy and amyloidosis. Filtered paraproteins can also accumulate within kidney cells and cause direct cytotoxic injury. Rarely, paraproteins that are resistant to proteolysis can crystallize within proximal tubules and cause acute tubular injury. In contrast, accumulation of crystallized paraproteins in other kidney cells, especially podocytes, is exceptional. Here, we report the finding of crystalline inclusions within podocytes and proximal tubules in a patient who presented with a

Cytologic evaluation of the urinary tract can be diagnostically rewarding in cases of renomegaly or when discrete kidney or bladder masses are identified. Cytology can often help to distinguish between cystic, inflammatory, and neoplastic disorders. Various types of cystic and benign urinary tract lesions, diseases associated with urinary tract inflammation, and the cytologic differences between primary and metastatic neoplasms of the kidney and bladder are described. Basic sampling techniques for urinary tract cytology are also discussed.

The application of computed tomography to the diagnosis of kidney disease and the features of renal neoplasms, cysts, hydronephrosis, inflammatory parenchymal lesions and other pathological processes are described. The diagnostic accuracy of computed tomography is excellent when compared with ultrasound and selective renal arteriography. This new non-invasive technique can obviate the need for arteriography in a significant number of morphological diseases of the kidney and is especially useful in defining the extent of malignant tumours.

CONTEXT: Nonneoplastic changes are often identified in nephrectomy specimens removed for renal neoplasms. Although they may be of prognostic or therapeutic importance, they are often overlooked. Nephrectomy is also performed for nonneoplastic lesions, the most frequent of which are urinary obstruction and end-stage renal disease, but the tissue diagnosis of these conditions and the implicated clinicopathologic correlation may not be well appreciated.
OBJECTIVE: To outline these nonneoplastic lesions with special attention to important diagnostic caveats and clinicopathologic correlations.

Lymphoblastic lymphoma is an uncommon subtype of lymphoid neoplasm in adults. Acute kidney injury at initial presentation due to lymphoblastic lymphoma infiltration of the kidneys has rarely been described. We report a 19-year-old woman who presented with acute kidney injury due to massive lymphomatous infiltration of the kidneys. The diagnosis of B-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma was established by immunohistochemical study of the biopsied kidney. The patient had an excellent response to the VDCLP protocol (vincristine, daunomycin, cyclophosphamide, asparaginase, and dexamethasone) with sustained

Renal replacement lipomatosis of the kidney is a rare, benign entity in which extensive fibrofatty proliferation of the renal sinus is associated with marked atrophy of the renal parenchyma. It is often associated with calculi or long-standing inflammation. This entity may be confused with a fatty neoplasm of the kidney. A 51-year-old woman with a past medical history of pancreas transplant for type 1 diabetes subsequently developed ureteral stricture. This was initially managed by a nephrostomy tube and nephroureterostomy stenting with periodic exchanges to help restore urine flow; however, t
