Exploring transcutaneous electrostimulation for proprioceptive feedback in upper limb prostheses: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Myoelectric upper-limb prosthetic users frequently encounter challenges related to proprioceptive deficits, which can impair their ability to perceive limb position and movement. As a result, there has been growing interest in developing strategies to enhance sensory feedback in these users. One promising approach is the use of transcutaneous electrostimulation (TES) to modulate kinesthetic perception and improve proprioception. METHODS: This study consists of two experiments. In the first experiment, TES was applied to the finger flexor muscles of ten able-bodied participants and

Subjective vividness of motor imagery has a neural signature in human premotor and parietal cortex.

Motor imagery (MI) is the process in which subjects imagine executing a body movement with a strong kinesthetic component from a first-person perspective. The individual capacity to elicit such mental images is not universal but varies within and between subjects. Neuroimaging studies have shown that these inter-as well as intra-individual differences in imagery quality mediate the amplitude of neural activity during MI on a group level. However, these analyses were not sensitive to forms of representation that may not map onto a simple modulation of overall amplitude. Therefore, the present s

Analysis of posture and eye movement responses to Coriolis stimulation under 1 G and microgravity conditions.

To detect the effect of microgravity on vestibular responses, we conducted Coriolis stimulation experiments at 1 G and μ G. Five men with vision occluded were asked to tilt their head forward while rotating at 100 degrees/sec. Postural changes were recorded by a 3D linear accelerometer, and the distance of upper body movement was derived from recordings of linear acceleration. Eye movements were recorded by a CCD camera. For a second period after commencing head tilt, the upper body moved 10 cm in the direction of inertia input at 1 G, but it moved to the opposite direction at μ G, i.e., 4 cm

Further considerations of visual cognitive neuroscience in aided AAC: the potential role of motion perception systems in maximizing design display.

Current augmentative and alternative communication technologies allow animation within visual symbol displays. Clinicians therefore have the option of incorporating motion-based effects into AAC displays. Yet there is no research in the field of AAC to guide this clinical decision-making, in terms of the number or types of animated symbols that would best suit specific communication needs. A great deal is known within the discipline of cognitive neuroscience about how humans perceive motion, however. In this paper we propose that the field of AAC might exploit these known principles of motion

Topo-kinesthetic memory in chronic headaches. A new test for chronic patients: preliminary report.

The objective of this study was to establish if chronic headaches with medication overuse can modify a topo-kinesthetic memory test. Nineteen patients with medication overuse headache (MOH), 13 patients with chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) without medication use and a group of "normal" subjects underwent a topo-kinesthetic memory test at T0 and after one month (T1); a control group of healthy volunteers was also tested to establish the baseline in our experimental setting. After one month, in the MOH patients there was a reduction of medication overuse from 3.3+/-2.65 to 1.1+/-2.23 (p<0.0

Emergence of self and other in perception and action: an event-control approach.

The present paper analyzes the regularities referred to via the concept 'self.' This is important, for cognitive science traditionally models the self as a cognitive mediator between perceptual inputs and behavioral outputs. This leads to the assertion that the self causes action. Recent findings in social psychology indicate this is not the case and, as a consequence, certain cognitive scientists model the self as being epiphenomenal. In contrast, the present paper proposes an alternative approach (i.e., the event-control approach) that is based on recently discovered regularities between per

Idiopathic spasmodic torticollis is not associated with abnormal kinesthetic perception from neck proprioceptive and vestibular afferences.

Proceeding from recent evidence for a sensory involvement in the pathophysiology of idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST), we asked whether the abnormal head posture of these patients is associated with distortions of their internal spatial reference frames due to abnormal processing of neck proprioceptive and/or vestibular input. Twelve ST patients were instructed to estimate, by adjusting a light pointer in the dark, their head and trunk mid-sagittal directions (as representatives of ego-centric references) and to reproduce a remembered target location in space (space centric reference). Postural control in Menière's disease and acoustic neurinoma when studied on a linearly oscillating platform.

We investigated the effect of visual control on postural stability on a moving platform in 36 patients with Menière's disease (MD) in 25 patients with operated acoustic neurinoma (AN) and in 19 healthy controls. The force platform was placed on rails and oscillated linearly at frequencies from 0.2 to 5 Hz at a constant velocity of 30 mm/s. In all subjects, the support surface oscillation produced postural instability that differed significantly from the base line stability. The body sway velocity increased almost linearly with the increase of stimulation frequency. The MD patients swayed more

Impaired suppression of vestibular nystagmus by fixation of visual and acoustic targets in neurological patients.

Suppression of vestibular nystagmus induced by fixation of visual and acoustic targets moving with the head during sinusoidal rotation (0.1 Hz, 75 degrees/second peak velocity) was tested in cerebellar and noncerebellar patients. Visual suppression was impaired greatly in cerebellar patients, without correlation with visual smooth-pursuit defects. Acoustic suppression was equal to or slightly weaker than visual suppression. In noncerebellar patients, a disturbance of visual suppression was found only in the presence of a severe impairment of pursuit eye movements. Acoustic suppression did not

The effect of computer-assisted therapeutic practice for children with handwriting deficit: a comparison with the effect of the traditional sensorimotor approach.

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of computer-assisted practice with the sensorimotor approach on the remediation of handwriting problems in children with dysgraphia. In a randomized controlled trial, experiments were conducted to verify the intervention effect. Forty two children with handwriting deficit were assigned to computer-assisted instruction, sensorimotor training, or a control group. Handwriting performance was measured using the elementary reading/writing test and computerized handwriting evaluation before and after 6 weeks of intervention. Repeated-measures ANO

Prediction of postural risk of fall initiation based on a two-variable description of body dynamics: position and velocity of center of mass.

This research addresses the question: what is the risk of fall initiation at a certain human posture? There are postures from which no one is able to keep their balance and a fall will surely initiate (risk=1), and others from which everyone may regain their stability (risk=0). In other postures, only a portion of people can control their stability. One may interpret risk to chance of a fall to be initiated, and based on the portion of fallers assign a risk value to a given human posture (postural risk). Human posture can be mapped to a point in a 2-dimensional space: the x-v plane, the axes o

The line copy task for kinesthesia and internal movement representation: application in children.

In the present study a new test is proposed and tested, which requires ability to use information both from kinesthesia and from mental rotation of previously produced cyclic movements over a distinct trajectory. This Line Copy Test (LICT) was performed by 58 children aged 7-11 years. For the S-part, the participants first had to make movements till they reached a barrier and then they were required to reproduce the same (S) movements without the barrier. For the O-part of the test the participants had to rely on an internal representation of a felt trajectory length, and reproduce the movemen

Imitation and matching of hand and finger postures.

Converging evidence from patients with unilateral brain lesions, from a patient with callosal disconnection, and from functional imaging in healthy subjects suggests different competencies of both hemispheres for imitation and matching of hand and finger postures. Whereas the left hemisphere is fully competent for processing hand postures, an additional right hemisphere contribution is needed for finger postures. I propose that the left hemisphere is responsible for coding gestures with reference to knowledge about the structure of the human body, whereas a right hemisphere contribution is nee

Effect of clozapine on motor function in schizophrenic patients.

It is well established that clozapine is less likely than typical antipsychotic drugs to cause clinically discernible extrapyramidal side-effects. There is a paucity of data, however, on clozapine's motor effects. In this report we compare normal controls to groups of chronic schizophrenic patients treated with either typical antipsychotic drugs or with clozapine. Motor function was measured with a target-matching task, a test relying on submaximal sustained force control. Results indicated that patients on clozapine performed with significantly lower accuracy (greater variability) of force co

Effects of a visual-vestibular stimulus on the vestibulo-ocular reflex.

Exposure before flight to an environment that provides altered visual-vestibular relationships similar to those seen in weightlessness might facilitate adaptation to spaceflight. Fifteen normal subjects were exposed for 0, 5, and 20 min to an abnormal visual-vestibular environment in which the vestibular sensation of lateral tilt was associated with the visual impression of lateral translation. Lateral eye movement elicited by similar tilt in darkness was measured before and at intervals after the exposure. Of the 15 subjects, 12 showed increased VOR amplitude following the exposure, but this

Visual perception dominance of fallers among community-dwelling older adults.

The authors postulated that older adult fallers show a greater tendency than older adult nonfallers to rely more on visual information sources in maintaining upright posture than on kinesthetic and vestibular cues. This paper presents descriptive statistics on 199 older adults living independently in the community. Their visual perception of the vertical and horizontal was analyzed with respect to age, sex, health status, and severity of injury as a result of a fall. The finding of significant impairments for fallers in visual perceptual abilities confirmed a trend previously established by on
