[Electromyographic examination of the femoral muscles in hemophilic effusion in the knee-joint and in irritated conditions of the knee-joint (author's transl)].

In ten patients with acute effusion in the knee-joint due to hemophilia, or with chronic knee-joint affection, the maximal isometric contraction of the M. vastus medialis and lateralis and of the M. rectus femoris was measured by electromyography. Measurements were taken before and after puncture of the effusion, or before and after intraarticular injection of a local anesthetic. In all examined patients, the contraction tests were performed below the pain threshold. The proportionate share of energy of the quadriceps muscle was considerably enhanced by reducing the intraarticular pressure and

Changes of knee joint and ankle joint orientations after high tibial osteotomy.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine (1) whether change in the tibial plateau inclination (TPI) after high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is different from change in the knee joint line orientation (KJLO) relative to the ground; (2) whether, in varus knee OA patients before and after HTO, these radiographic measures are different from those in normal control; and (3) whether the postoperative values of the TPI and KJLO relative to the ground are associated with short term clinical outcome scores after HTO. DESIGN: Fifty patients who underwent HTO and 75 normal controls were assessed with four radiograph

Total knee replacement in triple deformity with posterior subluxation of the knee joint.

Dislocation or subluxation following total knee arthroplasty has been extensively reported, but vice versa that is total knee replacement for subluxed or dislocated knee has not been published. Triple deformity of knee that is flexion, external rotation, valgus at knee associated with posterior subluxation of tibia occurs in rheumatoid arthritis, advanced tubercular arthritis and neglected posttraumatic residual dislocated knee. A 50 year old female with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis had the above disabling deformity in left lower limb and varus with medial tibial thrust in the other. Bila

The effect of knee braces on knee joint kinematics at different exercise speeds.

This study aims to investigate the influence of a new semi-rigid knee joint braces on kinematics using the Opti-knee knee joint kinematic analysis system at various exercise speeds. Twenty-four healthy young male adults were recruited for this study. Participants were randomly assessed while wearing and not wearing knee brace at four different speeds on a treadmill: normal walking (3.6 km/h), brisk walking (5.4 km/h), jogging (9 km/h), and moderate intensity running (10.8 km/h). Six degrees of freedom kinematic data from the knee joint were collected. Paired t-tests were conducted to calculate

Knee fusion versus above knee amputation as two options to deal with knee periprosthetic joint infection.

BACKGROUND: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) poses a significant challenge in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with recurrence rates as high as 14-28%, leading to substantial morbidity and treatment costs. When conventional treatments fail, knee fusion and above-the-knee amputation (AKA) emerge as alternative options. Existing literature offers conflicting views on the efficacy and impact of knee fusion versus AKA with varied outcomes and limitations. METHODS: This retrospective national study spanning 2010-2022 investigates Knee Fusion and AKA as options for addressing Knee PJI. Utilizing

Results of arthroscopic joint debridement in different stages of chondromalacia of the knee joint.

A retrospective study was performed of 161 patients who had undergone arthroscopic operation for chondromalacia of the knee joint. After an average follow-up period of 40 (range 10-72) months, patients with severe articular cartilage lesions who had undergone articular lavage alone showed significantly poorer results (P < 0.001). With the same stage of chondromalacia and having undergone the same surgical procedure, younger patients showed better results than older patients. The more effective interruption of the circulus vitiosus during the development of degenerative joint diseases is the pr

Creation of a Knee Joint-on-a-Chip for Modeling Joint Diseases and Testing Drugs.

The high prevalence of debilitating joint diseases like osteoarthritis (OA) poses a high socioeconomic burden. Currently, the available drugs that target joint disorders are mostly palliative. The unmet need for effective disease-modifying OA drugs (DMOADs) has been primarily caused by the absence of appropriate models for studying the disease mechanisms and testing potential DMOADs. Herein, we describe the establishment of a miniature synovial joint-mimicking microphysiological system (miniJoint) comprising adipose, fibrous, and osteochondral tissue components derived from human mesenchymal s

Inflammation is more distinct in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis compared to the knee joint.

PURPOSE: Most of the current understanding of articular cartilage maintenance and degradation is derived from large load-bearing synovial joints, in particular the knee joint. The aim of this study was to identify valuable degradation markers for cartilage degradation in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) by comparing the relative concentrations of carboxyterminal telopeptides of collagen types I and II (CTX-I and CTX-II), cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in synovial fluid (SF) of TMJ and knee joints with cartilage degradation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In t

Manipulation under Anesthesia for Stiffness of the Knee Joint after Total Knee Replacement.

BACKGROUND: Stiffness of the knee joint is a feared complication after total knee replacement (TKR). An initial noninvasive treatment option is the manipulation of the knee under anesthesia (MUA). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the midterm result of the MUA for joint stiffness after primary TKR. METHODS: Patients treated with the MUA for knee stiffness after primary TKR surgery performed at Akershus University Hospital during 2014-2018 were invited to a follow-up clinic. The range of motion (ROM) of the knee joint was measured using a goniometer, and the patients reported the Lyshol

Lateral dislocation of the knee joint after total knee arthroplasty: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a successful therapy for functional improvement and pain relief in advanced symptomatic degeneration of the knee joint. But it can be associated with many complications, one of which is instability. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of right knee dislocation after TKA was performed on her right knee due to severe varus deformity and flexion contracture. This instability was caused by persistent MCL tightness and iatrogenic lateral collateral, arcuate ligament, and popliteus tendon injury. The torn lateral co

Biomechanical Analysis of the Effects of Knee Savers on Knee Joint Loading During High Knee-Flexion Tasks.

Occupational activities that require high knee flexion, such as kneeling and squatting, are associated with a higher prevalence of knee osteoarthritis (OA). It is generally accepted that excessive contact pressures in the joint may cause degeneration of healthy knee joints. Ailments in the patellofemoral (PF) joint were a common cause for knee pain in clinical observations. Knee savers have been used in sports and occupational activities to protect the knee joints during tasks involving high knee flexion. The biomechanics of the effects of knee savers on musculoskeletal loading have not been i

[Conservative and joint-preserving therapy for knee osteoarthritis].

The treatment of knee osteoarthritis requires a multimodal approach and depends on the symptoms and stage of the disease. Conservative therapy is the first-line treatment and includes life-style changes (weight loss, exercise therapy), topical and oral pain medication, and intraarticular application of hyaluronic acid or platelet-rich plasma. Surgical joint-preserving therapies comprise knee arthroscopy to remove unstable meniscus tears or foreign bodies as well as osteotomy for unicompartmental arthrosis in case of leg malalignment.

Physiotherapeutic Approach for Septic Arthritis of Knee Joint.

Septic arthritis is an orthopaedic emergency associated with poor prognosis in cases with delayed treatment. The standard routes through which the infection spreads are hematogenous and direct entry. Any delay in medicine could mean the patient facing severe joint destruction, limitation in joint range, and inability to do activities of daily living. Septic arthritis is treated with a multidisciplinary approach in which physiotherapy is essential in making patients functionally independent. This article discusses a 58-year-old male patient with pain and swelling in the right knee joint and dif

Mid-Term Results following Traumatic Knee Joint Dislocation.

PURPOSE: Although treatment strategies of knee joint dislocations have evolved, there is still no consensus on the best method and timing. New therapeutic concepts suggest that early one-stage treatment, including suturing and bracing of the cruciate ligaments in acute knee joint dislocation, are leading to improved functional results. This study aimed to evaluate the midterm functional outcome following traumatic knee joint dislocation and to determine whether the outcome is influenced by the surgical management, patient habitus or concomitant injuries. METHODS: In this retrospective single

Periprosthetic knee joint infection caused by Sneathia sanguinegens.

Sneathia sanguinegens is a fastidious, Gram-negative, rod-shape organism rarely isolated from human specimens. In the present report, we describe a case of periprosthetic knee joint infection due to the organism, which occurred in a female patient receiving immunosuppressants for underlying lupus nephritis. The causative organism was isolated from the synovial fluid in the affected knee joint through inoculating the material on chocolate agar and incubation for 15 days under 5% CO2. Moreover, the organism was capable to be subcultured on chocolate agar with incubation for a few days under 5% C

Numerical Modeling of Shockwave Treatment of Knee Joint.

Arthritis is a degenerative disease that primarily affects the cartilage and meniscus of the knee joint. External acoustic stimulation is used to treat this disease. This article presents a numerical model of the knee joint aimed at the computer-aided study of the regenerative effects of shockwave treatment. The presented model was verified and validated. A numerical analysis of the conditions for the regeneration of the tissues of the knee joint under shockwave action was conducted. The results allow us to conclude that to obtain the conditions required for the regeneration of cartilage tissu

Sensory response following knee joint damage in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Altered sensory information arising from damaged knee joint structures has been hypothesized as a contributing factor to persistent muscle dysfunction following injury. METHODS: Composite femoral nerve sensory signal was measured in 24 rabbits randomly allocated (8 per group) to receive surgical anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) transection with or without autograft reconstruction or nothing (control). Two-weeks after the intervention composite afferent signals were recorded from the femoral nerve. Side-to-side ratios (surgical side vs contralateral healthy side) for peak femoral n
