A web-based knowledge database to provide evidence-based information to cancer patients: Utilization within the PIKKO study.

PurposeCancer is associated with an urgent need for understandable and reliable information, which is often not satisfied by information available online. Therefore, as part of the PIKKO project, a web-based knowledge database (WDB) was introduced to provide cancer patients with quality-assured, evidence-based information. This paper aims to provide insights into the usage (Who? How? What?) and the effects regarding health literacy of the WDB.MethodsA patient survey and automatically generated logfile data were evaluated. Two user groups, patients and patient navigators (PNs), were compared.Re

A practical approach based on learning-based model predictive control with minimal prior knowledge of patients for artificial pancreas.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Complete identification of the glucose dynamics for a patient generally requires prior clinical procedures and several measurements for the patient. However, these steps may not be always feasible. To address this limitation, we propose a practical approach integrating learning-based model predictive control (MPC), adaptive basal and bolus injections, and suspension with minimal requirements of prior knowledge of the patient. METHODS: The glucose dynamic system matrices were periodically updated using only input values, without any pretrained models. The optimal ins

Identifying Pediatric Drug Safety Knowledge Gaps: An Integrated Approach Leveraging Real-World Data, a Biomedical Knowledge Base, and Postmarketing Surveillance Data.

BACKGROUND: Drug safety has historically been understudied in pediatric populations, rendering them "therapeutic orphans." Pediatric drug indications and dosages are often inferred by extrapolating safety, efficacy, and dosing data from adult studies, leading to widespread off-label use. However, this approach fails to account for age-specific differences in disease pathophysiology and developmental pharmacokinetics (PK). Despite evidence that adverse drug events (ADEs) manifest with greater severity in pediatric populations than in adults, fewer than 50% of drugs have been systematically stud

Evaluation of DeepSeek with a RAG-based knowledge base in preoperative assessment for arthroplasty to improve the decision-making accuracy of junior physicians.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing elective joint replacement are mostly elderly individuals with multiple chronic diseases. These patients have a higher risk, so preoperative assessment for joint replacement is vital for surgical safety but remains challenging for junior physicians. This study aimed to evaluate the decision-making performance of different versions of DeepSeek (Chat and R1) and their knowledge base (KB)-enhanced schemes in perioperative risk assessment and their impact on junior physicians' decision-making quality. METHODS: A total of 292 anonymized medical records from joint re

Reconstruction and analysis of the gene network regulating apoptosis in hepatocellular carcinoma based on scRNA-seq data and the ANDSystem knowledge base.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer characterized by rapid progression, high mortality rate and therapy resistance. One of the key areas in studying the molecular mechanisms of HCC development is the analysis of disturbances in apoptosis processes in hepatocytes. Throughout life apoptosis ensures the elimination of old and defective cells while the attenuation of this process serves as one of the leading factors in carcinogenesis. In this study we reconstructed and analyzed the gene network regulating hepatocyte apoptosis in humans based on single-cell transc

Predicting Patient-specific Dosimetric Benefits of Proton Therapy for Skull-base Tumors Using a Geometric Knowledge-based Method.

PURPOSE: To predict the organ at risk (OAR) dose levels achievable with proton beam therapy (PBT), solely based on the geometric arrangement of the target volume in relation to the OARs. A comparison with an alternative therapy yields a prediction of the patient-specific benefits offered by PBT. This could enable physicians at hospitals without proton capabilities to make a better-informed referral decision or aid patient selection in model-based clinical trials. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Skull-base tumors were chosen to test the method, owing to their geometric complexity and multitude of nearb

Delayed knowledge transfer: Cross-modal knowledge transfer from delayed stimulus to EEG for continuous attention detection based on spike-represented EEG signals.

Decoding visual and auditory stimuli from brain activities, such as electroencephalography (EEG), offers promising advancements for enhancing machine-to-human interaction. However, effectively representing EEG signals remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we introduce a novel Delayed Knowledge Transfer (DKT) framework that employs spiking neurons for attention detection, using our experimental EEG dataset. This framework extracts patterns from audiovisual stimuli to model brain responses in EEG signals, while accounting for inherent response delays. By aligning audiovisual features w

SOFIA: a knowledge-infused prompt-based reasoning framework for anxiety screening in social media.

Linguistic-based anxiety screening has become a widely adopted approach for detecting anxiety in social media, with pre-trained language models (PLMs) now forming the state-of-the-art foundation for early mental health detection. However, most existing PLMs are not explicitly optimized for anxiety detection (AD), limiting their adaptability to fine-grained psycholinguistic cues. To address this gap, we introduce SOFIA (Anxious? SOFten-It-Out), a novel prompt-based reasoning framework that enhances PLM capability for binary AD without full fine-tuning. SOFIA integrates multiple prompt template

The General Mechanism of Status: The Impact of Perceptual and Knowledge-Based Social Status on Selective Attention.

Social status, a fundamental dimension of human social life, shapes access to resources and opportunities and influences how individuals perceive and interact with others. Perceivers can infer others' social status from both perceptual cues (e.g., clothing) and knowledge-based cues (e.g., biographical information), yet it remains unclear whether and how these distinct types of status cues influence early-stage attentional selection. To address this question, the present study employed a modified two-rectangle paradigm to examine the effects of social status on space- and object-based attention

Evaluation of general and specialized knowledge-based planning models for prostate cancer with bowel proximity.

This study evaluated knowledge-based planning (KBP) models for prostate cancer, focusing on cases where the bowel lies close to the planning target volume excluding the rectum (PTV-R). Such proximity increases toxicity risk, raising the question of whether a Special Model (Model-S) is required. Although General Models are widely applicable, their performance in bowel proximity cases remains uncertain. A General Model (Model-G) was trained with 30 standard cases and a Model-S with 30 bowel proximity cases. Thirteen additional proximity cases were used for independent evaluation. RapidPlan-gener

How and Why Does Knowledge-Based Biased Docking Improve Molecular Docking Performance?

Since 2012, with the publication of our foundational work "Solvent structure improves docking prediction in lectin-carbohydrate complexes," our group has been devoted to the study of protein-ligand interactions using molecular simulation tools. Over the past decade, we have shown that protein-solvent interactions, particularly when simulated in mixed solvents containing probes such as ethanol, phenol, and isopropanol, often mimic the interactions observed in experimental protein-ligand complexes. This knowledge can be used to improve docking performance by guiding pose prediction and scoring.

Knowledge-Based Feature Selection Substantially Enhances Data-Driven Wastewater Treatment Modeling.

Data-driven modeling in wastewater treatment is increasingly constrained by the reality of small, high-dimensional data, where the abundant monitoring parameters in small-sized data sets obscure fundamental mechanistic understandings. This study proposes a knowledge-driven feature selection framework that integrates mechanistic insights with statistical correlations to identify the most informative predictive features. Using nitrous oxide (N2O) emission prediction at a full-scale plant as a case study, we compared classic deep-learning feature selection algorithms using attention mechanisms ag

Ontology-based annotation and fuzzy recommendation for community formation in smart city knowledge platforms.

INTRODUCTION: The MADCOW annotation system enables group-based annotation, allowing users to direct annotations toward communities focused on specific domain topics. In smart city environments, such groups may include citizens, urban planners, and domain experts collaborating on urban services, infrastructure, mobility, environment, and public safety. Existing recommendation approaches mainly rely on ontology-based semantic similarity, which limits their effectiveness in dynamic collaborative settings. METHODS: To address this limitation, this study extends ontology-based matching by incorpor

Can knowledge-based autoplanning keep up with advances in radiotherapy optimization for oropharyngeal cancer?

INTRODUCTION: The performance of knowledge-based autoplanning depends on historical plans used to train the autoplanning models. Here, we investigate the applicability of an existing RapidPlan (RP) model for head and neck cancer to a novel planning and delivery solution (RapidArc Dynamic, RAD), which has the potential to improve plan quality through the integration of new degrees of freedom. RAD integrates static-angle modulated ports and a dynamic collimator in volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) fields.
