Goldenhar syndrome is a rare congenital disorder. Limbal dermoid associated with this syndrome can cause high astigmatism and amblyopia in children. We report significant reduction in astigmatism, after limbal dermoid excision with lamellar keratoplasty, in a rare case of Goldenhar syndrome. A three-year-old female patient, with left-sided limbal dermoid with high astigmatism and amblyopia, was referred to us for visual rehabilitation. The patient had left-sided limbal dermoid and preauricular appendages. Oral examination revealed bifid labial frenum, a deep antegonial notch on the left side o

The importance of the presence of a maxillary midline diastema resides in its position and the concern it causes to patients. This specific diastema has been attributed to genetic and environmental factors, even though it is often a normal feature of growth, especially in primary and mixed dentition. The need for treatment is mainly attributed to esthetic and psychological reasons, rather than functional ones. Although it is often the case, treatment plans should not be selected empirically but rather should be based on adequate scientific documentation. Possible therapeutic approaches include

Aesthetic concerns and functional abnormalities, such as dentin hypersensitivity, are often associated with gingival recession defects. Root coverage procedures aim to restore both gingival aesthetics and function in recession defects. The coronally positioned flap combined with the subepithelial connective tissue graft is one of the most widely used root coverage procedures. The present report illustrates four different indications where this procedure has been successfully employed. An isolated Miller class II recession defect associated with frenum pull, multiple adjacent Miller class I def

We present a novel method for columellar reconstruction using a hidden donor site and review the challenges and limitations of columellar reconstruction in children with Fitzpatrick VI skin type. A staged reconstruction was conceived in which a full-thickness skin graft was transferred to the superior gingivolabial sulcus in the area of the maxillary frenulum. Six months later, the prelaminated soft tissue flap was delivered through a horizontal incision at the subnasale, and the donor site closed primarily. We report satisfactory results following a novel approach to composite soft tissue rec

BACKGROUND: This case report describes a method for coronally repositioning gingiva for root coverage over the maxillary central incisors while simultaneously performing a frenectomy.
METHODS: The patient was a healthy 43-year-old Brazilian female. Her chief complaint pertained to the unesthetic appearance of the gingival recession involving both maxillary central incisors. Intraoral examination revealed a thick biotype with an adequate band of keratinized gingiva, Miller Class I mucogingival defects, and a broad frenum extending beyond the mucogingival junction. The surgical technique used t

Purpose: This study investigated whether the position of the maxillary frenum is associated with the presence and severity of anterior tooth caries in children aged 6 to 36 months. Methods: Five dentists from the South Texas Oral Health Network (STOHN) assessed 319 children using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and classed frenum attachment. Results: Of 319 patient children, 170 (53.9%) exhibited no anterior caries, while 149 (46.1%) demonstrated varying levels of decay with higher caries grades observed in older children (P<0.001). Most participants (79%) were

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how peri-implant hard and soft tissue height (BH, MH) alter after final prostheses placement related to labial hard and soft tissue thickness (BW, MW).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five platform-switched implants were classified into four groups according to BW and MW: type 1 (thick BW and thick MW), type 2 (thick BW and thin MW), type 3 (thin BW and thick MW), type 4 (thin BW and thin MW). Tissue resorption was evaluated on cone-beam CT images taken at final prostheses placement, at 1-year follow-up, and at 2-year follow-up. Kruskal-Wallis test and post hoc Mann-Whitn

The development of abnormal oral frena is an important diagnostic feature of several syndromic states. Five such syndromes are reviewed which include Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, holoprosencephaly, Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, and oral-facial-digital syndrome. Each syndrome exhibits relatively specific frena abnormalities, ranging from multiple, hyperplastic, hypoplastic, or absent. 1-8 In addition to abnormal oral frena observed in syndromic conditions, anomalous frena are encountered without other associated phenotypic features of genetic or chromosomal sta

The purpose of this article is to report the orthodontic treatment of a patient with extremely delayed development of the maxillary lateral incisors. At 7 years of age, the boy's permanent maxillary lateral incisors had not erupted. A radiograph showed no tooth germs in place, although well-defined radiolucent areas were evident. Removal of the radiolucent areas was contemplated, but it was rejected in favor of a conservative approach. At age 13, peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors erupted; they were positioned during orthodontic treatment and reshaped with composite restorations, providing

Ludwig's angina is a rapidly progressive cellulitis of the submandibular space and has the potential for significant upper airway obstruction. Most reported cases follow an odontogenic infection. We present the case of a 13-year-old girl who underwent a frenuloplasty to correct speech disturbances and subsequently developed a life-threatening infection of the floor of mouth. Immediate intubation, surgical decompression and antibiotic therapy successfully resolved the episode. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an iatrogenic Ludwig's angina attributable to a frenuloplasty performed f

Orofaciodigital syndromes have many clinical and cephalometric anomalies, including facial irregularities, oral cavity abnormalities, and malformations of fingers and toes. In this case of twin girls, buccal exploration, cephalometric examination, and genetic analysis were performed to diagnose Orofaciodigital I or Orofaciodigital II syndrome. Clinically, the twins had several dental and skeletal irregularities. Genetic analysis revealed a DNA segment abnormality corresponding to exon 3 and presence of nucleotide change, 243C>G, leading to the missense mutation H81Q. This causative mutation as

Lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) is a chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disorder of uncertain aetiology that is clinically characterized by the appearance of well delimited white plaques or papules, preferentially affecting the skin and genitals, and more rarely the oral cavity. We present the case of a woman with LSA limited to the oral cavity in the form of a well delimited, flat whitish lesion affecting the vestibular gingiva of the right upper incisors and left central incisor, and extending towards the vestibular fundus and frenulum of the upper lip. Widening of the periodontal space

The purpose of this study was to assess postretention stability of maxillary midline diastema closure, to search for predictors of relapse, and to test for associations between relapse and other postretention changes. The sample consisted of 35 patients with pretreatment diastemas ranging from 0.9 mm to 3.0 mm (mean 1.4, SD = 0.5) following eruption of the maxillary canines. Data were gathered from treatment charts, study models, periapical radiographs, and cephalograms taken pretreatment, posttreatment, and 1 to 26 years postretention (mean 11.4, SD = 6.4). Measurable diastema relapse was obs

Tooth agenesis (TA) is the developmental absence of one or more permanent teeth. We report on 10 members of a Pakistani family afflicted with TA with variable associated features inherited in autosomal dominant fashion with full penetrance. The malformation is bilateral in the majority of cases, and hallmark feature is the absence of lateral and central incisors and canines whereas first and second premolars are involved less often. Affected individuals also have pronounced variable features associated with TA such as diastema between central incisors, overgrown labial frenum, peg-shaped lower

Congenitally missing teeth of three generations of a family and the spousal influence on the oligodontia of the third generation is investigated. For clarification, a review of commonly used terms is included in the paper. Although there are a number of factors affecting the failure to develop permanent tooth buds, most researchers believe that an autosomal dominant trait is responsible for the oligodontia in this family. Many syndromes are associated with oligodontia, but none seem to be prevalent in the direct descendants of the first generation. A member of the second generation married a p

Anatomical characteristics, such as shallow vestibular depth, high frenum attachments, and thin labial bone tend to make treatment of mandibular gingival recession defects particularly challenging. Even though a number of recent systematic reviews have identified the connective tissue graft (CTG) in combination with coronally advanced flaps (CAF) as the most consistently effective treatment procedure for Miller Class I and II defects, they did not separate maxillary vs mandibular outcomes, reporting instead aggregate results. In this prospective consecutive case series, recombinant human plate
