Lactobacillus plantarum HY7712 ameliorates cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression in mice.

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in fermented foods have attracted considerable attention recently as treatment options for immune diseases, the incidence of which has been increasing worldwide. The ability of 500 strains of LAB, isolated from kimchi, to induce TNF--α production in peritoneal macrophages was investigated. Lactobacillus plantarum HY7712 most strongly induced TNF--α production as well as NF-κB activation. However, HY7712 inhibited NF-κB activation in LPS-stimulated peritoneal macrophages. When HY7712 was orally treated in cyclophosphamide (CP)-immunosuppressed mice for 5 or 15 days, i

Lactobacillus casei rhamnosus Lcr35 in children with chronic constipation.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present paper was to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics (Lactobacillus casei rhamnosus, Lcr35) for treating children with chronic constipation and to compare its effect with magnesium oxide (MgO) and placebo. METHODS: This double-blind placebo-controlled, randomized study enrolled 45 children under 10 years old with chronic constipation. They were randomly assigned to receive Lcr35 (8 x 10(8) c.f.u./day; n = 18), MgO (50 mg/kg/day; n = 18), or placebo (n = 9) orally twice daily for 4 weeks. Lactulose use (1 mL/kg per day) was allowed when no stool passage for 3

Lactobacillus casei reduces CD8+ T cell-mediated skin inflammation.

Probiotics, including Lactobacilli, have been postulated to alleviate allergic and inflammatory diseases, but evidence that they exert an anti-inflammatory effect by immune modulation of pathogenic T cell effectors is still lacking. The aim of this study was to examine whether L. casei could affect antigen-specific T cell-mediated skin inflammation. To this end, we used contact hypersensitivity to the hapten 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene, a model of allergic contact dermatitis mediated by CD8+ CTL and controlled by CD4+ regulatory T cells. Daily oral administration of fermented milk containing L. c

Weissella confusa (basonym: Lactobacillus confusus) bacteremia: a case report.

Infection with Lactobacillus is rare, and only a handful of species have been identified as being clinically significant: Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, and Lactobacillus leichmannii. The literature contains one case report of bacteremia caused by Weissella confusa (basonym: Lactobacillus confusus), but the clinical significance of the infection was unclear. We describe a case of W. confusa bacteremia in a 46-year-old man with a history of abdominal aortic dissection and repair. This procedure was complicated by gut ischemia, which necessitated massive small bowel resection. He

Tolerogenic probiotics Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus promote anti-inflammatory profile of macrophages-derived monocytes of newly diagnosed patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is known as an autoimmune disorder that is characterized by the breakdown of self-tolerance, resulting in disease onset and progression. Macrophages have been implicated as a factor in the development of SLE through faulty phagocytosis of dead cells or an imbalanced M1/M2 ratio. The study aimed to investigate the immunomodulatory effects of Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus on M1 and M2 macrophages in new case lupus patients. For this purpose, blood monocytes were collected from lupus patients and healthy people and were cultured for 5 day

Lactobacillus bulgaricus or Lactobacillus rhamnosus Suppresses NF-κB Signaling Pathway and Protects against AFB₁-Induced Hepatitis: A Novel Potential Preventive Strategy for Aflatoxicosis?

Aflatoxin B₁ (AFB₁), a mycotoxin found in food and feed, is immunotoxic to animals and poses significant threat to the food industry and animal production. The primary target of AFB₁ is the liver. To overcome aflatoxin toxicity, probiotic-mediated detoxification has been proposed. In the present study, to investigate the protective effects and molecular mechanisms of Lactobacillus bulgaricus or Lactobacillus rhamnosus against liver inflammatory responses to AFB₁, mice were administered with AFB₁ (300 μg/kg) and/or Lactobacillus intragastrically for 8 weeks. AML12 cells were cultured and treate

Group B Streptococcus vaginal colonisation throughout pregnancy is associated with decreased Lactobacillus crispatus and increased Lactobacillus iners abundance in the vaginal microbial community.

Group B Streptococcus (GBS) asymptomatically colonises the vagina of up to 40% of pregnant women and can transmit to neonates during birth, causing neonatal pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis, and significant mortality. Vaginal GBS colonisation can be attributed to a range of host and bacterial factors, which may include the composition of the vaginal microbial community. There are few studies that have examined the vaginal community composition in relation to GBS colonisation throughout pregnancy. Here, we performed 16S rRNA sequencing (V3-V4) on vaginal swabs from women at 24- and 36-weeks' gesta

Evaluation of the Probiotic Potential of Lactobacillus acidophilus Strain JB2CON.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics have attracted much attention recently because of their potential health benefits and aim at correcting the imbalance of gut microbiota. Dairy fermented foods play an important role as a probiotic carrier, and fermented dairy products like dahi are well known for their ability to maintain the viability of bacteria and their acceptance by consumers. Nevertheless, the production of low-cost, locally manufactured probiotic products that possess antimicrobial activity against food pathogens is relatively scarce. The principal goal of this current study was to isolate a new p

Quantification of Lactobacillus spp. of interest for the study of the vaginal microbiota.

The optimal vaginal microbiota is dominated by Lactobacillus spp., particularly Lactobacillus crispatus or Lactobacillus gasseri. Lactic acid production by Lactobacillus inhibits the growth of other bacterial species. Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is characterized by depletion of vaginal Lactobacillus and treatment with current choice antibiotics often fails urging novel alternatives including probiotics or prebiotics. Testing new components for BV treatment often utilize in vitro quantification of Lactobacillus. Thus, this study aimed to compare methods for L. crispatus and L. gasseri quantificati

Fabrication and characterization of bioprints with Lactobacillus crispatus for vaginal application.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is characterized by low levels of lactobacilli and overgrowth of potential pathogens in the female genital tract. Current antibiotic treatments often fail to treat BV in a sustained manner, and > 50% of women experience recurrence within 6 months post-treatment. Recently, lactobacilli have shown promise for acting as probiotics by offering health benefits in BV. However, as with other active agents, probiotics often require intensive administration schedules incurring difficult user adherence. Three-dimensional (3D)-bioprinting enables fabrication of well-defined archi

Effect of a Lactobacillus fermentation product on postweaning heifer performance.

The objective of the experiment was to compare the effect of dietary inclusion of a prebiotic fermentation product of Lactobacillus acidophilus (LaP, RumaCell; 5 mL animal-1 d-1) or monensin on performance of replacement beef heifers. Heifers received a total mixed ration containing either LaP (n = 77) or monensin (MON; Rumensin; 200 mg animal-1 d-1; n = 79). Heifers were fed for 71 d in a GrowSafe unit, so individual feed intake could be measured. Heifers were weighed every 2 wk and feed efficiency calculated by residual feed intake (RFI). At the end of the RFI trial, heifers remained on thei

Lactobacillus rhamnosus AD3 as a Promising Alternative for Probiotic Products.

Lactobacillus strains dominate the vaginal habitat and they are associated with a lower risk of genital infections. In addition, they contribute to the conservation of the vaginal microbiota by producing postbiotic agents. Previous studies have shown that their predominance involves antimicrobial activity against urogenital pathologies. In this context, probiotics may improve treatment outcomes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the probiotic properties of lactobacilli strains of vaginal origin using a multidisciplinary approach. For this purpose, safety criteria, ability to resist at low

Using of the 16S rDNA sequencing for identification of Lactobacillus species.

INTRODUCTION: Lactobacilli play an important role in maintaining vaginal health and pro- tecting the genital tract from bacterial infections, so very often they are used as probiotics. Despite the scientific consensus on the significance of the genus Lactobacillus, its species identification still poses several difficulties. The aim of this study was to find out if the 16S rDNA sequencing method allows exact genotyping of Lactobacillus species. METHODS: 78 isolates from healthy pregnant women were tested: 57 from the vagina and 21 from the rectum. We also examined seven reference strains: L.

Endocarditis of the native aortic valve caused by Lactobacillus jensenii.

Lactobacilli are Gram-positive anaerobic rods or coccobacilli, commonly found as commensals in human mucosa. Rarely, they can cause serious infections such as infective endocarditis (IE), and the most frequently implicated species causing serious infections are L. casei and L. rhamnosus. IE caused by Lactobacillus jensenii is very rare, with only six reported cases so far, to the best of our knowledge. We present a case of native aortic valve endocarditis caused by L. jensenii, complicated by root abscess and complete heart block, and requiring emergent surgical intervention.

Influence of thermoplastic retainers on Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus adhesion.

INTRODUCTION: This study was designed to test the hypothesis that thermoplastic retainers influence oral microbial flora during the retention period because they prevent the flushing effect of saliva on dental and mucous tissues. METHODS: Twenty-four orthodontic patients finished the study. After debonding, the patients were given thermoplastic retainers (Essix ACE 0.040-in plastic, Dentsply International, York, Pa) for both jaws and instructed to wear them all day. Plaque samples from tooth surfaces and saliva samples were collected from each patient just after debonding (T0), and on day 15
