The role of prokaryotic mercury methylators and demethylators in Canadian Arctic thermokarst lakes.

Permafrost soils are critical reservoirs for mercury (Hg), with the thawing process leading to the release of this element into the environment, posing significant environmental risks. Of particular concern is the methylated form of mercury, monomethylmercury (MMHg), known for its adverse effects on Human health. Microbial communities play a pivotal role in the formation of MMHg by facilitating Hg methylation and in the demethylation of MMHg, slowing the crossing of toxic threshold concentration in the environment. However, the specific microbes involved still need to be understood. This study

First evidence of free-living Naegleria species in recreational lakes of Alberta, Canada.

Rising temperatures are increasing environmental habitats for thermotolerant pathogens, such as the so-called 'brain-eating amoeba', Naegleria fowleri. To the best of our knowledge, however, Naegleria species have not been reported in environmental water sources in Canada. We surveyed popular recreational lakes in Alberta, Canada during the summer bathing period to determine the presence or absence of Naegleria species. While N. fowleri was not isolated in this study, we identified other thermotolerant species, including Naegleria pagei, Naegleria gruberi, Naegleria jejuensis and Naegleria ful

Pesticide Prioritization by Potential Biological Effects in Tributaries of the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Watersheds of the Great Lakes Basin (USA/Canada) are highly modified and impacted by human activities including pesticide use. Despite labeling restrictions intended to minimize risks to nontarget organisms, concerns remain that environmental exposures to pesticides may be occurring at levels negatively impacting nontarget organisms. We used a combination of organismal-level toxicity estimates (in vivo aquatic life benchmarks) and data from high-throughput screening (HTS) assays (in vitro benchmarks) to prioritize pesticides and sites of concern in streams at 16 tributaries to the Great Lakes

[Seasonal Variability of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in the Urban Lakes in Changchun, China].

The partial pressures of carbon dioxide p(CO2) and methane p(CH4) in the surface water of seven urban lakes in Changchun city, China (Nan Lake, Bei Lake, Yanming Lake, Shengli, Dilisuo, Changchun, Tianjia) , have been studied in both summer and autumn related to the environment and water quality parameters. The results indicated that both in summer and autumn, CH4 of seven lakes was all supersaturated, and CO2 was all supersaturated except in Nan lake and Shengli lake. For either p( C02) or p( CH4), there was a significant difference among different urban lakes (P < 0.05), and there was almost

Periodic acid Schiff loops and blood lakes associated with metastasis in cutaneous melanoma.

Aggressive melanoma cells are able to form alternative routes for angiogenesis. The formation of extracellular matrix-rich vasculogenic-like networks [periodic acid Schiff (PAS) loops] and expression of endothelial-associated genes [allowing direct contact of erythrocytes (blood lakes)] are forms of vasculogenic mimicry (VM). The detection of these alternative routes may be used as an additional staging factor for cutaneous melanoma and predicts the route of metastasis in melanoma. We studied the association of the presence of VM with metastasis (lymphogenous and/or haematogenous) in patients

Sedimentary Records of Non-Aroclor and Aroclor PCB mixtures in the Great Lakes.

Three sediment cores from Lake Ontario, Lake Erie and Indiana Harbor Ship Canal were collected, segmented and analyzed for Aroclor and non-Aroclor polychlorinated biphenyl congeners (PCBs). PCBs associated with the commercially produced Aroclor mixtures 1248 and 1254 dominate the sediment signal and the sum of all congeners (ΣPCB) peaks in concentration and accumulation around 1970 in the Great Lakes. This trend is very similar to Aroclor production history. In the Indiana Harbor Ship Canal, PCBs appear around 1935 and remain at very high levels between 1940 and 1980, probably reflecting the h

Listeria marthii sp. nov., isolated from the natural environment, Finger Lakes National Forest.

Four isolates (FSL S4-120(T), FSL S4-696, FSL S4-710, and FSL S4-965) of Gram-positive, motile, facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming bacilli that were phenotypically similar to species of the genus Listeria were isolated from soil, standing water and flowing water samples obtained from the natural environment in the Finger Lakes National Forest, New York, USA. The four isolates were closely related to one another and were determined to be the same species by whole genome DNA-DNA hybridization studies (>82 % relatedness at 55 degrees C and >76 % relatedness at 70 degrees C with 0.0-0.5 %

Determination of mercury methylation potentials in the water column of lakes across Canada.

A stable isotope technique was used to trace the formation of methylmercury in lake water incubation assays at in situ conditions in five lakes across Canada. Methylation activity was only detected in the anoxic hypolimnia of lakes. The stable isotope was methylated at varying rates between lakes and depths within lakes ranging from 0.56%/day to 14.8%/day. A peak in methylation potential was typically observed just below the oxycline, which decreased with increasing depth. The depth and rates of methylation potential changed seasonally with no methylation activity occurring after fall turnover

Gonadal steroidogenesis in vitro from juvenile alligators obtained from contaminated or control lakes.

The ubiquitous distribution of many contaminants and the nonlethal, multigenerational effects of such contaminants on reproductive, endocrine, and immune systems have led to concerns that wildlife worldwide are affected. Although the causal agents and effects are known for some species, the underlying physiological mechanisms associated with contaminant-induced reproductive modifications are still poorly understood and require extensive research. We describe a study examining the steroidogenic activity of gonads removed from juvenile alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) obtained from contam

Proteolytic Activity and Substrate Specificity of Lake Geneva.

Lakewater microorganisms secrete proteases which contribute to the turnover of dissolved organic matter and the degradation of peptidic contaminants. However, little is known about the identities and substrate specificities of these proteases. Herein, we sought to characterize the global proteolytic fingerprint of the extracellular proteases present in Lake Geneva, the largest freshwater body in Central Europe. Using Multiplex Substrate Profiling by Mass Spectrometry (MSP-MS), we identified preferred enzymatic cleavage next to positively charged and certain nonpolar amino acids, while cleavage

Watershed influences on mercury in tributaries to Lake Ontario.

Mercury (Hg) concentrations and speciation were measured in nine tributaries to Lake Ontario as part of two independent field-sampling programs. Among the study tributaries, mean total Hg (THg) concentrations ranged from 0.9 to 2.6 ng/L; mean dissolved Hg (THgD) ranged from 0.5 to 1.5 ng/L; mean particulate Hg (THgP) ranged from 0.3 to 2.0 ng/L; and mean methylmercury (MeHg) ranged from 0.06 to 0.14 ng/L. Watershed land cover, total suspended solids (TSS), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were evaluated as potential controls of tributary Hg. Significant relationships between THgD and DOC wer

Stormwater runoff to an impaired lake: impacts and solutions.

Stormwater runoff can represent a significant source of pollutants to downstream water bodies. An integrated assessment was conducted for the Spring Lake watershed in western Michigan because of concerns that increased impervious land cover in the watershed, especially in sub-basins adjacent to Spring Lake, would result in greater stormwater runoff and pollutant loads. Spring Lake has a history of high total phosphorus (TP) concentrations and cyanobacterial blooms. An alum treatment, paid for by an assessment, was applied to Spring Lake in 2005 to control internal phosphorus loading; hence, th

Mercury in the pelagic food web of Lake Champlain.

Lake Champlain continues to experience mercury contamination resulting in public advisories to limit human consumption of top trophic level fish such as walleye. Prior research suggested that mercury levels in biota could be modified by differences in ecosystem productivity as well as mercury loadings. We investigated relationships between mercury in different trophic levels in Lake Champlain. We measured inorganic and methyl mercury in water, seston, and two size fractions of zooplankton from 13 sites representing a range of nutrient loading conditions and productivity. Biomass varied signifi

Sulfide species as a sink for mercury in lake sediments.

The interaction between two contrasting examples of lake sediments and small concentrations of mercury added to the sediments in solution has been studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Whereas one lake (Esthwaite Water) is biologically productive, with a seasonal cycle of phytoplankton activity, including stratification and Fe(III) reduction, and a mineralogy involving quartz, muscovite, and clinochlore, the other (Botany Pond) remains oxic throughout the year. In the latter case, the sediment is predominantly quartz and calcite. Chemical analyses of these two lake sediments reflectthe

The fluctuations of the key East African lakes discussed are summarized in Fig. 4 which also includes the available evidence from Lake Rukwa (42) and Lake Chad (43) Exceot for Lake Victoria, all of these now lack surface outlets and are situated in much drier climates than the major lakes of the Western Rift Valley, which remain filled to their overflow levels. The apparent differendes among the fluctuations of the lakes are partly due to differendes in the nature of the evidence or the intensity of research or both, although there must also have been important local differences in the histori
