The effects of family, culture and sex on linguistic development across 20 languages.

Languages vary in their complexity; caregivers vary in the way they structure their communicative interactions with children; and boys and girls can differ in their language skills. Using a multilevel modelling approach, we explored how these factors influence the path of language acquisition for young children growing up around the world (mean age 2-years 9-months; 56 girls). Across 43 different sites, we analysed 103 mother-child pairs who spoke 3,170,633 utterances, 16,209,659 morphemes, divided across 20 different languages: Afrikaans, Catalan, Cantonese, Danish, Dutch, English, Farsi, Fre

Evaluation of musical emotion perception and language development in children with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVES: While the primary purpose of cochlear implant (CI) fitting is to improve individuals' receptive and expressive skills, musical emotion perception (MEP) is generally ignored. This study assesses the MEP and language skills (LS) of children using CI. METHODS: 26 CI users and 26 matched healthy controls between the ages of 6 and 9 were included in the study. The Test of Language Development (TOLD) was applied to evaluate the LS of the participants, and the Montreal Emotion Identification Test (MEI) was applied to evaluate the MEP. RESULTS: MEI test scores and all subtests of TOLD we

Supporting caregivers of children born prematurely in the development of language: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Infants born prematurely can display impairments that negatively impact the early years of their development. Compared to their peers born at term, preterm children have higher risks of cerebral palsy, sensory deficits, learning disabilities, cognitive and language deficits, as well as difficulties related to attention and behaviour. Following discharge, parents of preterm children are often supported through neonatal follow-up programs or by community health care practitioners. Through assessment and consultation, professionals foster parental resilience by teaching them about the

From melody to words: The role of sex hormones in early language development.

Contribution to Special Issue on Fast effects of steroids. Human infants are the most proficient of the few vocal learner species. Sharing similar principles in terms of the generation and modification of complex sounds, cross-vocal learner comparisons are a suitable strategy when it comes to better understanding the evolution and mechanisms of auditory-vocal learning in human infants. This approach will also help us to understand sex differences in relation to vocal development towards language, the underlying brain mechanisms thereof and sex-specific hormonal effects. Although we are still f

A systematic literature review of sex differences in childhood language and brain development.

The extent of sex differences in childhood language development is unclear. We conducted a systematic literature review synthesizing results from studies examining sex differences in brain structure and function relevant to language development during childhood. We searched PubMed and Scopus databases, and this returned a total of 46 published studies meeting criteria for inclusion that directly examined sex differences in brain development relevant to language function in children. The results indicate that: (a) sex differences in brain structure or function do not necessarily lead to differe

Study of child language development and disorders in Iran: A systematic review of the literature.

Child language development and disorder in Iran has been the focus for research by different professions, the most prominent ones among them being psychologists and speech therapists. Epidemiological studies indicate that between 8% and 12% of children show noticeable signs of language impairment in the preschool years; however, research on child language in Iran is not extensive compared to studies in English speaking countries, which are currently the basis of clinical decision-making in Iran. Consequently, there is no information about the prevalence of child language disorders in Iranian p

Exploring the role of auditory analysis in atypical compared to typical language development.

The relationship between auditory processing and language skills has been debated for decades. Previous findings have been inconsistent, both in typically developing and impaired subjects, including those with dyslexia or specific language impairment. Whether correlations between auditory and language skills are consistent between different populations has hardly been addressed at all. The present work presents an exploratory approach of testing for patterns of correlations in a range of measures of auditory processing. In a recent study, we reported findings from a large cohort of eleven-year

The relationship between language development and behaviour problems in children with hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: There are well-replicated findings that link poor development on a range of communication skills with increased behavioural problems. This paper examines this relationship in children with hearing loss. METHOD: One hundred and twenty children with hearing loss (67 boys, 53 girls) and 63 hearing children (37 boys, 26 girls) with a mean age of 8 years from eight districts in Southern England were assessed for receptive and expressive language skills. The relationships between these measures and an aggregate of parent- and teacher-reported behaviour problems in the children were inve

Theoretical influences on research on language development and intervention in individuals with mental retardation.

In this article, we consider the theoretical debates and frameworks that have shaped research on language development and intervention in persons with mental retardation over the past four decades. Our starting point is the nativist theory, which has been espoused most forcefully by Chomsky. We also consider more recent alternatives to the nativist approach, including the social-interactionist and emergentist approaches, which have been developed largely within the field of child language research. We also consider the implications for language development and intervention of the genetic syndr

Development of early motor skills and language in children at risk for familial dyslexia.

Differences in motor development and the relationship between motor and language development were studied in 88 children with familial risk for dyslexia (43 females, 45 males; at-risk group) and 88 children without familial risk for dyslexia (35 females, 53 females; control group; n=176) during the first two years of life. A structured parental questionnaire was used to assess motor development. Expressive language skills were assessed at the age of 18 months with the Reynell Developmental Language Scales and at 18 and 24 months with the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories. [A longitudinal study of three-year-old children with delayed development of language].

UNLABELLED: From January 1982 to December 1986, 113 three-year-old children (100 boys and 13 girls) visited the department of pediatrics, Asahikawa Medical College, because of delayed development of language (their expressive language age less than two-year-old). Of these children, 102 children (90%) have visited until they graduated from junior high school for the evaluation of intelligence quotient (IQ), diagnosis, the type of attended school and complications. The mean follow-up period was 10.8 years. The 113 children ware classified as 32 cases of developmental language disorder (DLD), 38

Natural language processing to develop a standardized lexicon for precision medicine in oncology.

Precision medicine terminology is increasingly used across clinical, laboratory, payer, regulatory, and policy settings; however, distinct terminology may be applied interchangeably or inconsistently across stakeholders, and foundational concepts may not be uniformly understood across multidisciplinary audiences with varying levels of expertise. This misalignment may create confusion for stakeholders as they attempt to navigate guideline recommendations and payer coverage policies, potentially impacting patient access to testing and treatment. In 2025, AMCP held a 2-day partnership forum on th

Language Development in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children: An Ecological Systems Perspective.

Background: Language outcomes among DHH children are widely variable. Equally variable is the diversity of factors involved in fostering healthy language development in this population. Some DHH children use cochlear implants and hearing aids and reach expected milestones. Others exhibit delays, ranging from mild to severe. Regardless of how "success" is defined for individual children who use these technologies, recognizing the ecological contexts in which DHH children develop language, and the relationships among those contexts, can support the identification of contextual predictors and poi

Functional dissociation of language and theory of mind in the developing superior temporal lobe.

Language and theory of mind (ToM; the ability to infer others' mental states) are both crucial for human communication, and yet their developmental origins are unclear. Are their neural substrates distinct within the superior temporal lobe (STL) but with opposing lateralization, as in adults? Or do they emerge from common neural substrates during development, perhaps in homologous regions originally involved in more basic social processing? Here we investigate the development of this functional dissociation, and the dissociation of their underlying connectivity fingerprints in a large cohort o

Cortical auditory response and language development in children with microcephaly by Zika virus.

OBJECTIVE: This study proposes to assess the auditory and linguistic development of children with microcephaly due to maternal Zika virus infection and to understand the influence of this condition on auditory cortical responses and language development. METHODS: The cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in the northeast of Brazil. Twenty children (mean age 27-months), of both sexes, with and without microcephaly due to Zika virus participated in the study. For auditory cortical responses, 40 natural /ba/ and /da/ monoaural speech sounds were presented at 70 dB HLeP. The Early Lan

Development and validation of natural language processing algorithms in the national ENACT network.

OBJECTIVE: Electronic Health Record (EHR) data are critical for advancing translational research and AI technologies. The ENACT network offers access to structured EHR data across 57 CTSA hubs. However, substantial information is contained in clinical narratives, requiring natural language processing (NLP) for research. The ENACT NLP Working Group was formed to make NLP-derived clinical information accessible and queryable across the network. METHODS: We established the ENACT NLP Working Group with 13 sites selected based on criteria including clinical notes access, IT infrastructure, NLP exp

Predictors of aspiration pneumonia: developing a new matrix for speech and language therapists.

INTRODUCTION: The contributing factors of aspiration pneumonia have been well documented. However, there are gaps in the literature regarding identifying the weight associated with each factor and the relationship between factors. METHOD: In this study, 20 potential predictors of aspiration pneumonia (with four additional variables) have been applied to historic Speech and Language Therapy records to greater understand the significance of each contributor of aspiration pneumonia. 152 cases with an oropharyngeal dysphagia, and a Speech and Language Therapy recommendation of eating and drinking

Development and norming of the Hungarian CDI-III: A screening tool for language delay.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties in language development are related to social and emotional problems, lower academic outcomes, and lower quality of life from childhood to adolescence. These grave consequences might be significantly reduced by timely identification and professional support. The introduction of systematic screening for language delay (LD) in 3-year-old children in Hungary was based on the recent adaptation of the MacArthur-Bates CDI-III (HCDI-III). AIMS: To explore the relevant psychometric properties of the HCDI-III; to identify factors characteristic of the families and children inf

Six-dimensional dynamic tractography atlas of language connectivity in the developing brain.

During a verbal conversation, our brain moves through a series of complex linguistic processing stages: sound decoding, semantic comprehension, retrieval of semantically coherent words, and overt production of speech outputs. Each process is thought to be supported by a network consisting of local and long-range connections bridging between major cortical areas. Both temporal and extratemporal lobe regions have functional compartments responsible for distinct language domains, including the perception and production of phonological and semantic components. This study provides quantitative evid
