[Assessment and support pathways for learning disabilities in CPTS].

Since 2021, the Pévèle Douaisis territorial professional health community has set up an assessment and support pathway for learning disorders in children and adolescents. The aim is to support young people with dyslexia in developing their care pathway, in order to facilitate their care and schooling via the implementation of educational support. The program is managed by an advanced practice nurse, whose role is to carry out a holistic assessment of the situation.

Strengths and difficulties in children with specific learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The study aims to investigate the social, emotional, and behavioral challenges in children with a specific learning disability (SLD) and to identify the factors that accompany these problems by screening with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). METHODS: The descriptive study was conducted on 278 children with SLD. Strengths and difficulties in children were evaluated by the SDQ applied to their mothers. The percentage of cases above the cut-off limits of the SDQ was calculated. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used for analysis. RESUL

Social isolation and achievement of students with learning disabilities.

Students with learning disabilities (LDs) experience heightened levels of social isolation, but researchers have not fully explored its various dimensions at school or determined which aspects contribute to educational gaps associated with LDs. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we find that middle and high school students with LDs are more likely to experience most types of isolation. Student with LDs have fewer friends, their friends are less educationally ambitious, they feel more detached and disliked at school, and they are more likely to avoid friendship

Neuropsychology of Learning Disabilities: The Past and the Future.

Over the past 50 years, research on children and adults with learning disabilities has seen significant advances. Neuropsychological research historically focused on the administration of tests sensitive to brain dysfunction to identify putative neural mechanisms underlying learning disabilities that would serve as the basis for treatment. Led by research on classifying and identifying learning disabilities, four pivotal changes in research paradigms have produced a contemporary scientific, interdisciplinary, and international understanding of these disabilities. These changes are (1) the emer

The Sheffield Learning Disabilities Outcome Measure: a factor analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Sheffield Learning Disabilities Outcome Measure (SLDOM) is routinely used across clinical services in the UK, despite not yet showing evidence of psychometric reliability or validity. However, it is reported that the SLDOM demonstrates good face validity, and represents a valuable tool for providing useful information around the parent-child relationship in the context of having a child with a Learning Disability (LD). METHOD: This study involved 263 parents or carers of a child with LD who completed the SLDOM. Data from this study were subjected to factor analysis. RESULTS:

Sustainability of health promotion for people with learning disabilities.

AIM: To explore whether delivery of a health education programme would enable people with learning disabilities to gain knowledge about health and use it to enhance their wellbeing. METHOD: A mixed methodological approach, including questionnaires, focus groups and interviews, was used with people with learning disabilities. FINDINGS: Health education enhanced the knowledge of people with learning disabilities about their health, but this was not sustainable. Participants were unable to transfer this new information into their daily lives, and the knowledge gained did not result in demonstra

Screening for learning disabilities in young adult career counseling.

The Strengths and Weaknesses Academic Profile (SWAP) was constructed in Israel in response to the local need of career counselors for a valid, reliable, comprehensive, parsimonious, and computerized screening device for identifying those likely to be at risk of learning disabilities (LD). The method chosen was self-report. A set of cognitive items was written and divided into seven scales: reading, writing, attention and memory, computation, English as a foreign language (EFL), study skills, and self-image. The screening tool was validated on a research sample in Sheffield, UK, based on compar

Memory for everyday information in students with learning disabilities.

This study compared students with and without learning disabilities (LD) on their recall of academic information and information encountered in the students' everyday lives. The academic recall measures included a sentence listening span test, a rhyming words working memory test, and a visual matrix working memory task. Students' cued recall of all the tasks was also measured. The everyday working memory tasks included a dance episode event recall test; a library procedure recall test; and recall tests of commonly found objects, such as a coin, a telephone, and a McDonald's sign. Agreement among four models used for diagnosing learning disabilities.

We compared the level of agreement among four models used to diagnose learning disabilities (LD), including the simple discrepancy, intraindividual, intellectual ability-achievement, and underachievement models. The sample included 170 clinic-referred university students. The simple discrepancy model diagnosed significantly more students with LD than the other three models. The highest degree of agreement occurred between the intraindividual and intellectual ability-achievement models (70%); the lowest level of agreement occurred between the simple discrepancy and underachievement models (48%)

Non-consensual sterilization of the adult with learning disabilities.

Community nurses may be asked for advice on sterilization operations for adults with learning disabilities by worried parents/carers. This article sets out the legal position advocated by the English courts. Sterilization for adults with learning disabilities is generally non-consensual. The courts cannot consent on behalf of the adult but can rule on the lawfulness of the operation. Cases need not be brought before the court when the operation is to be carried out to treat a specific menstrual malady and where sterilization is an incidental result. However, the Law Commission (1995) has set g

Group learning for adults with disabilities or chronic disease.

In some facilities, group learning has been used to teach adults who have various disabilities or chronic diseases (e.g., diabetes, cardiac problems, cancer, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury). The following literature review discusses the advantages of group learning, which include peer support, individuals' learning and gaining motivation from each other, reduced feelings of isolation, and opportunities to share problems and goals. It appears likely that greater use of group learning could enhance rehabilitation efforts for adults.

Verbal analogical reasoning in children with language-learning disabilities.

This study was designed to explore the influences of both cognitive and linguistic abilities on verbal analogy completion. School-age children classified as language-learning disabled were administered five types of verbal analogies: synonyms, antonyms, linear order, category membership, and functional relationship. The performance of the children with language-learning disabilities was compared with one group of normally developing children matched for mental age and another group matched for language age. Results indicated that the group matched for mental age performed better than the other

Is the money following the clients with learning disabilities?

For the past decade patients with learning disabilities living in long stay mental handicap hospitals have been resettled in the community. Local authorities have also taken on the care of new patients who would once have been long stay residents. The imperfect data that are available suggest that in England about half the residents in mental handicap hospitals in 1981 are now the responsibility of local authorities; the figures for Wales and Northern Ireland are 38% and 33%. Data on revenue suggest that the savings to the health service are much less--perhaps 9% in Northern Ireland and 3.6% i

Adolescents with learning disabilities: a comparative life-stream interpretation.

The subjective experiences of adolescents with learning disabilities (LD) were compared to those of their low-achieving and normally achieving peers. Three groups of juniors and seniors from one suburban high school district, 18 students with learning disabilities (15 males, 3 females), 17 low-achieving students (12 males, 5 females), and 20 average-achieving students (12 males, 8 females), were given electronic pagers and booklets for 1 week. They were signaled every 40 minutes during school hours, and every 2 hours after school. As soon as possible after receiving a signal, they responded to

Sources of information used in diagnosing childhood learning disabilities.

One hundred nineteen questionnaires in which board certified/eligible child neurologists were asked to rank the diagnostic importance of 8 sources of information commonly used in the assessment of children with learning disabilities were analyzed by the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed ranks test. All pairwise comparisons of the 8 sources revealed significant differences (P less than or equal to .033) except for psychologic reports (mean rank +/- 1 S.D. = 2.09 +/- 1.14) and medical histories (2.26 +/- 1.45) which were rated equal (P = .397) and, compared to the other sources, diagnostically most

Learning disabilities as a childhood manifestation of severe psychopathology.

The severity and nature of psychopathology in a group of learning disabled children was investigated. Compared to children in a normal control group, those in the learning disabled group manifested a significant degree of emotional maladjustment. They also exhibited disturbances in areas of ego functioning generally thought to be impaired in those with borderline personality organization. No linear relationship was found between severity of pathology and degree of underachievement.

IQ is irrelevant to the definition of learning disabilities.

The purpose of this article was to examine the logic and the empirical data supporting the proposition that intelligence tests are not necessary for the definition of a learning disability. Four assumptions of the use of IQ test scores in the definition of learning disabilities were examined. These assumptions were (a) IQ tests measure intelligence; (b) intelligence and achievement are independent, and the presence of a learning disability will not affect IQ scores; (c) IQ scores predict reading, and children with low IQ scores should be poor readers; and (d) reading disabled children with dif

Learning disabilities. The primary care role in multidisciplinary management.

Learning disability is not just a school disability; it is a total life disability. The same dysfunctions that interfere with normal learning processes also impact on self-image, peer relationships, family relationships, and social interactions. If attention deficit disorder is present, the same hyperactivity or distractibility that creates problems for the child in the classroom interferes with peer and family relationships. From initial request for help to final implementation of a model of intervention, a multidisciplinary team effort is needed. Since many areas of difficulty may be involve
