Lemierre syndrome is a rare, life-threatening condition characterized by an acute otorhinolaryngologic infection with septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and septic embolism, particularly to the lungs. We describe a case of a previously healthy 15-year-old female patient who initially presents fever and odynophagia but quickly develops neck and pleuritic chest pain. Computed tomography was performed and the radiological findings confirmed the diagnosis of a Lemierre syndrome. She was managed with antibiotics, anticoagulant for three days and symptomatic treatment, with a gradu

Lemierre's syndrome, also called septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, necrobacillosis or postanginal sepsis, is an infection that begins in the oropharyngeal space, is complicated by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and infectious metastases. The rapid progression to serious clinical conditions that compromise the patient's life and its low frequency justify the disclosure of clinical cases. We present the case of a 27-year-old woman who developed facial edema and trismus 48 hours after completing treatment with phenoxymethylpenicillin for an odontogenic in

Fusobacterium necrophorum is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium that can lead to severe infection in young patients even without immunodeficiency. Due to the length of time for isolation and speciation of this Gram-negative bacillus (typically 5-8 days), and its potential mortality, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy should be started without delay. With a cervical thrombosis, even on an unusual site and with a standard condition such as tonsillitis, Lemierre syndrome should be considered. We report a case of Lemierre syndrome in a previously healthy young woman.

The symptoms of a previously healthy 14-year-old female with an initial history of tooth pain and swelling of the left maxillary evolved to a progressive headache and altered neurological findings characterized by auditory hallucinations, sleep disturbances, and aggressiveness. She was brought to the emergency department after 21 days of the initial symptoms. An initial computed tomography (CT) scan showed frontal subdural empyema with bone erosion. The symptoms continued to evolve to brain herniation 24 hours after admission. A second CT scan showed a left internal jugular vein thrombosis. Th

Lemierre's syndrome is only very rarely caused by Porphyromonas asaccharolytica. Here, we report the case of a 35-year-old man who developed a left peritonsillar abscess, thrombophlebitis of the left internal jugular vein, and septic embolization of both lungs. Anaerobic P. asaccharolytica was isolated in the blood cultures, and we subsequently confirmed the diagnosis as Lemierre's syndrome. Our case indicates that although P. asaccharolytica is not commonly found in oral cavities, this organism may still cause Lemierre's syndrome. Consequently, when it is detected in blood cultures, the treat

Lemierre syndrome is a potentially life-threatening septic thrombophlebitis associated with a neck infection. We present a case of a 10-month-old female infant with Lemierre syndrome complicated by thrombotic strokes and purulent pericarditis. A healthy 10-month-old female infant presented to the pediatric emergency department of our tertiary care center complaining of 5 days of fever to 105°F and 1 day of neck stiffness and decreased oral intake. In the pediatric emergency department, she developed septic shock, requiring vasopressor support, endotracheal intubation, and broad-spectrum antibi

BACKGROUND: Lemierre syndrome is an extremely rare complication of mild-to-moderate pharyngeal infections that causes septic embolization to the lungs and other distant sites. One-third of cases present a polymicrobial bacteremia, although the most isolated microorganism is Fusobacterium necrophorum. A case of postanginal sepsis caused by a rarely isolated microorganism, Staphylococcus auerus, in a geriatric patient is reported.
CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old man was admitted to hospital with fever and sore throat. Doppler ultrasonography imaging of the neck veins demonstrated an occlusive throm

UNLABELLED: Lemierre's syndrome is a rare clinical syndrome of septic thrombophlebitis following a bacterial oropharyngeal infection. Lemierre's syndrome can be difficult to recognise and has significant morbidity. We report the case of a young man with Lemierre's syndrome caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, who responded well to 2 weeks of beta-lactam therapy.
CONTRIBUTIONS: This case report summarises the key presenting features of Lemierre's syndrome and provides a brief literature review considering the South African context.

CASE: A patient presented with acute paralysis in the setting of undiagnosed Lemierre's syndrome. Streptococcus pyogenes was the causative organism leading to internal jugular vein thrombosis, sternocleidomastoid abscess, vertebral osteomyelitis, and epidural phlegmon. The patient was treated both surgically, with abscess evacuation, hemicorpectomy, and fusion, and medically, with antibiotics and anticoagulation. Postoperatively, the patient regained upper extremity strength and lower extremity sensation, but the paraplegia remained.
CONCLUSION: Lemierre's syndrome is a rare complication of o

Lemierre's syndrome is a serious disease that typically causes oropharyngeal infection with internal jugular vein thrombosis, followed by distant infection focus, such as septic pulmonary embolism. The main causative organisms are anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity, namely Fusobacterium necrophorum. We encountered an extremely rare case of Lemierre's syndrome, where double vision was found to be the first symptom. The patient's blood culture results showed the presence of F. nucleatum, which spread from the sphenoid sinus to the skull base because of chronic sinusitis; the patient presented

Lemierre's syndrome is an uncommon and potentially fatal complication of oropharyngeal and facial infections. It involves an associated septic thrombophlebitis, bacteremia, and septic emboli. Traditionally, compromise of the internal jugular vein has been described in conjunction with an infection caused by anaerobes, especially, Fusobacterium necrophorum. In recent years, however, variant forms have been appearing, including other vessel compromise and other etiologic agents. We present the case of Lemierre's syndrome in a 31-year-old male with facial vein thrombosis, septic emboli to the lun

We report a case of septic thrombophlebitis of the right internal jugular vein linked with right-sided acute parotitis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a patient who had recently undergone a pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy. Our case is unique because acute parotitis is a less-recognized cause of Lemierre's syndrome, never previously linked with MRSA infection in this context. We review the literature on diagnosis and management of Lemierre's syndrome caused by acute parotitis. Prompt diagnosis and aggressive antibiotics ensured a favourable outcome.

Lemierre's syndrome is more common in young adults and the majority of patients present with pharyngitis. Multifocal pyomyositis is very rare in this setting and in young children. We present here a case of multifocal pyomyositis caused by Fusobacterium spp. in a young child. Fusobacterium should be considered in the differential diagnosis of multifocal pyomyositis of unclear etiology.

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is a rare and life-threatening condition characterized by suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV), and a history of head and neck (H&N) sepsis. LS is usually caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, which is part of the normal flora in the oro-pharynx, and the digestive and urogenital tracts. We here report the first case of LS following perianal sepsis.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 60-year-old man with a painful left neck swelling, dysphagia and worsening sepsis was referred from a peripheral unit where he had an incision and drainage of

This is a case report of Lemierre's syndrome, a septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) usually preceded by pharyngitis and bacteraemia with an anaerobic organism. Fusobacterium necrophorum is ananaerobic Gram-negative bacillus and is the most common organism reported to cause Lemierre's syndrome which usually occurs one to three weeks post pharyngitis or oropharyngeal surgery. A 21-year-old patient presented with signs of sepsis and a history of sore throat, fever, and tender cervical lymph nodes. Blood cultures grew F. necrophorum and Computed Tomography (CT) showed a fill

Lemierre's syndrome is an uncommon, but fatal infection of the internal jugular vein (IJV) that is usually caused by Fusobacteirum necrophorum although a wide range of bacteria has been reported as causative agents. Typical symptoms include fever, sore throat, neck swelling, pulmonary symptoms and arthralgia; however, the diagnosis of this infection is frequently overlooked as initial manifestation might be subtle and non-specific. Definite diagnosis requires positive blood culture and radiological evidence of thrombus in the IJV. We describe a case of a patient with Lemierre's syndrome who wa

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare disease in young otherwise healthy people showing septic embolism in the lungs and peripheral vessels. We report the case of a 19-year-old male patient who presented initially with a phlegmon of the right palm and beginning septic shock. During the clinical course a subcutaneous abscess of the left shoulder, multiple lesions of the lungs and a pericardial abscess were identified and Lemierre's syndrome was diagnosed. In this case, positron emission tomography (PET) was revealed to be an appropriate instrument to determine the extent of the disease in a one step pr
