OBJECTIVE: To restore accommodation in primate eyes by refilling the lens capsule with injectable silicone compounds.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight eyes of 8 monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were treated by the lens refilling procedure. To prevent leakage of the injected liquid silicone before it polymerized in the capsule in vivo, a silicone plug for sealing the capsular opening was developed. After endocapsular phacoemulsification following an upper minicircular capsulorhexis, the plug was introduced into the capsulorhexis opening. A silicone mixture was injected into the capsular bag through t

Human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) with lens capsules were cultured to investigate the morphology and outgrowth potential of the cultured cells. Anterior lens capsules obtained during cataract surgery were placed cell side down in a medium in culture wells. Cultivation was successful with 24 of 36 specimens from senile cataract patients. The HLECs grew beyond the capsular edge from the third to fifth day after the beginning of cultivation, and extended actively to the periphery of the culture well. The cells had extended 2.5 mm beyond the capsular edge by the second week and 3.8 mm by the fou

The ultrastructure of the glomerular basement membrane in Alport's syndrome is well known and characteristic of this disease, but the anterior lenticonus that frequently occurs in this syndrome has not been similarly studied. An anterior lens capsule from a 30-year-old patient with lenticonus who had Alport's syndrome was obtained at capsulectomy and found to be one third the normal thickness centrally and to be more fibrillar than usual. There were large numbers of partial capsular dehiscences containing fibrillar material and vacuoles. Cellular debris and more recent ruptures of lens epithel

A 72-year-old woman with cataract had phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in the capsular bag with continuous curvilinear capsulorrhexis in the right eye. One day postoperatively, cortical remnants were noted between the posterior capsule and the intraocular lens optic located inferiorly. Uncorrected visual acuity was 1.0 and the patient was emmetropic. At a control visit 6 years postoperatively, the patient showed a hyperopic shift compared with the refraction of the first postoperative period with a best-corrected visual acuity of 0.4. A transparent liquefied substance that

Lifebuoy cataract is a rare form of congenital cataract with anatomical characteristics. Herein, we present a case of an otherwise healthy 42-year-old female with a long-standing history of blurred vision. Examination showed the presence of esotropia and bilateral horizontal nystagmus. Visual acuity was limited to light perception in both eyes. Slit-lamp examination showed a calcified lens capsule with the absence of lens material in the right eye and the presence of an annular cataract in the left eye, corresponding to a unilateral lifebuoy cataract. She underwent cataract surgery with intrao

PURPOSE: During cataract surgery an IOL is placed within the capsular bag. Clinical studies show that IOLs with a square edge profile and complete contact between the IOL and the anterior capsule (AC) are currently the best way to prevent posterior capsule opacification (PCO). This has been challenged by recent clinical and experimental observations, which suggest that if the capsular bag is kept open with separation of contact between the AC and posterior capsule (PC) by an "open-bag device" PCO is dramatically reduced. Therefore, the current study set out to evaluate the putative merits of a

Lens regeneration occurs in New Zealand albino rabbits after endocapsular lens extraction, if the anterior and posterior capsules remain relatively intact. Research beginning in the 19th century showed that regeneration of the lens begins as early as 2 weeks postoperatively, depends on the size of the capsulotomy and how it has scarred, and is faster in younger animals. More recently, implantation of embryonic ectoderm at the time of lens removal has been shown to improve the growth and quality of the regenerated lenses. Lens fiber differentiation follows a process similar to embryological dev

Lens colobomas extending more than 4 clock hours and causing visual impairment require lens extraction along with capsular support devices with scleral fixation for adequate centration of the capsular bag and for prevention of capsular fornix aspiration with inadvertent extension of zonular dialysis intraoperatively. In this case series, we describe a technique for the management of isolated lens colobomas involving 4-5 clock hours by clear lens extraction and intraocular lens implantation using a combination of a capsular tension ring with a capsular tension segment (CTS) for the centration a

BACKGROUND: Negative dysphotopsias (ND) are visual aberrations associated with in-the-bag optic intraocular lens (IOL) placement, causing arc-shaped or linear shadows. Reverse optic capture (ROC) is employed to prevent ND, yet it poses the risk of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) which usually develops within 2-5 years post-surgery due to the lens epithelial cells (LECs) proliferation and migration onto the posterior capsule. This can lead to a cloudy or hazy appearance in the visual field. Early identification of posterior capsular opacities is crucial to ensure timely intervention and

The crystalline lens can cause intraocular inflammation when its capsule is ruptured or allows leakage of lens proteins into the anterior chamber, a condition known as lens-induced uveitis (LIU). LIU is a rare form of uveitis and can be classified based on the integrity of the lens capsule. When the capsule is ruptured, the inflammation is called phacoantigenic or phacoanaphylactic uveitis, whereas if the capsule remains intact but leaks proteins, it is termed phacolytic uveitis. Common causes include ocular trauma, previous surgery, or spontaneous rupture in hypermature cataracts. Initial tre
