A dynamic binomial sequential sampling plan for Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) on broccoli and cauliflower in Australia.

Binomial sequential sampling plans have been used widely for monitoring invertebrate pest populations. Such plans are typically based upon a single action threshold (AT), which represents the level of infestation that the grower is prepared to accept before using a control measure. For many cropping systems this acceptable infestation level is likely to vary, being dependent on factors such as the growth stage of the crop and the value or demands of the destination market (e.g., local or high-quality export). We developed and validated a computer-assisted plan that uses a dynamic AT. The plan

Sublethal 2-tridecanone impairs survival, development and fecundity of the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

In plants, one of the most sophisticated defensive strategies against herbivores is producing toxic metabolites for protecting themselves. 2-Tridecanone, which has been identified as a plant-derived and herbivore-induced defensive substance of plants, plays a role in retarding the development and decreasing the survival rate of Lepidopteran larvae. In the present study, we comprehensively evaluated the overall toxic effects of 2-tridecanone on the oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata Walker, 1851 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a notorious polyphagous pest. Our results revealed that 2-tridecanone at

Entomopathogenic Nematode Steinernema carpocapsae Venom Proteins Disrupt Developmental Physiology and Reproduction of Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The use of Steinernema carpocapsae infective juveniles as biological control agents is a long-standing practice, yet the oral impact of their secreted venom proteins on crop pests remains largely unknown. We evaluated the oral toxicity of S. carpocapsae venom proteins against Spodoptera frugiperda using artificial diet assays. Ingestion caused significant dose-dependent toxicity in early-instar larvae, resulting in mortality and a prolonged developmental duration. Carry-over effects were profound; treated pupae were smaller and malformed, with only 19% of larvae fed on 1000 ng g-1 venom protei

Genetic variation associated with increased lambda-cyhalothrin resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in West Africa.

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) is a new serious destructive and widespread pest of corn which recently invaded subtropical regions worldwide. As this invasive species is spreading across the continent, it is vital to assess its susceptibility to currently used insecticides and establish the potential underlying resistance mechanism to better inform control programmes. In this study, we characterized the strains from eighteen fall armyworm populations from different countries in West Africa, established their susceptibility profiles to the main insecticides and genotyped t

Contact Toxicity, Electrophysiology, Anti-Mating, and Repellent Effects of Piper guineense Against Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is a long-distance migratory pest, which invaded the African continent in 2016, causing enormous losses to agricultural crops, especially maize. Synthetic insecticides are primarily used for managing S. frugiperda, but they leave residues on human food and animal feed and also cause environmental hazards. We evaluated the crude ethanolic extract of Piper guineense fruits for contact toxicity on S. frugiperda larvae and determined the lethal concentration (LC50) of the extract. Additionally, we conducted an electrophysiological (EAG) experiment to deter

Mechanisms mediating false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta (lepidoptera: Tortricidae), mating disruption using point-source pheromone dispensers.

BACKGROUND: False codling moth (FCM) is a polyphagous Tortricid moth that is a priority agricultural pest. Mating disruption shows potential as an environmentally friendly and sustainable control option against FCM in stone fruit, table grapes and citrus. How the technique alters the mate-finding ability of FCM and what factors are important to ensure the control success is uncertain. Recent work indicated that Lepidoptera are disrupted either competitively or non-competitively. No studies have yet been conducted on FCM to determine its disruptive mechanism. However, studies conducted on close

First report of field-evolved resistance to insecticides in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) from Punjab, Pakistan.

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda, is one of the major destructive pests of agriculture in Pakistan. The widespread use of insecticides for the management of S. frugiperda has resulted in the field-evolved resistance to insecticides in different strains worldwide. However, field-evolved resistance to insecticides has not yet been reported in S. frugiperda from Pakistan. Following reports of control failure of S. frugiperda in Punjab, Pakistan, a study was planned to investigate resistance to insecticides from different classes in field strains of S. frugiperda to confirm whether the res

Azadirachtin-based insecticide impairs testis morphology and spermatogenesis of the southern armyworm Spodoptera eridania (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

BACKGROUND: In the search for alternative tools for integrated pest management, azadirachtin, a botanical insecticide, has been used with the most promising activity against Spodoptera spp., but the mechanism of cytotoxicity on reproductive organs remains unclear. Spodoptera eridania (Stoll, 1782) is a polyphagous pest with great economic importance that has become an important target to elucidate the action of azadirachtin on the reproductive organs of insect pests, helping to understand the deleterious effects caused by its exposure. This study evaluated the effects of chronic exposure to az

Feeding Volatiles of Larval Sparganothis pilleriana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Attract Heterospecific Adults of the European Grapevine Moth.

Plants release volatiles in response to caterpillar feeding. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) attract natural enemies of the herbivores and repel or attract conspecific adult herbivores in a tri-trophic interaction which has been considered to be an indirect plant defense against herbivores. Recently, we demonstrated the attraction of male and female European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana (Denis & Schiffermüller) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) to a blend of phenylacetonitrile and acetic acid, two compounds identified as HIPVs in heterospecific apple-leafroller interactions. Insecticidal Effects of Triterpene Glycosides Extracted From Holothuria atra (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) Against Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) is economically important in many countries. Many biopesticides have been developed and studied to control this pest species; however, few natural products from marine organisms have been studied for their pesticidal efficiency. This study compared the acute contact toxicity of solvent extracted from the viscera of Holothuria atra and isolated triterpene glycoside compounds on third-instar S. litura. Our results showed that crude methanolic extracts were the most toxic to the larvae (LC50 ~ 10.37 mg/ml) compared with other crude extracts and contained the bioactiv

Biological Traits of Cadra cautella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Reared on Khodari Date Fruits Under Different Temperature Regimes.

The almond moth, Cadra cautella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a serious worldwide pest of dates and other crops, both in the field and in storage. Infestation by this pest significantly limits the sale and export of dates. Modified atmospheres, the temperature manipulations, are the best eco-friendly alternatives in stored product protection. We examined temperature regulation as an ecologically friendly method of pest management in stored food commodities, in particular, its effects on characteristics of C. cautella biology, including development time, oviposition period, fecundity, f

Characterizing the symbiotic relationship between Wolbachia (wSpic) and Spodoptera picta (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae): From genome to phenotype.

Wolbachia is a genus of symbiotic bacteria prevalent in arthropods, with diverse effects on host reproduction and fecundity; however, it is unclear how Wolbachia modulates the host reproductive system. In this study, a novel Wolbachia strain, wSpic, was identified in the Noctuid moth Spodoptera picta and its effect on the reproduction of this host was investigated. We sequenced and annotated the 1,339,720 bp genome of wSpic. We identified a total of five WO phage regions in the genome and found no evidence of any plasmids associated with wSpic. Evolutionary analysis revealed that wSpic belongs

Sublethal effects of flufenoxuron on Spodoptera mauritia Bosid. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) testicular biochemical profiling and Spermatogenic alterations.

Flufenoxuron, a widely used chitin synthesis inhibitor, is effective against several insect and mite pests. This study evaluated the reproductive toxicity in male sixth-instar larvae of Spodoptera mauritia, a sporadic lepidopteran pest of rice crops. Larvae were topically treated with sublethal concentrations of flufenoxuron (ED25-0.00068 μg and ED50-0.00015 μg), and biochemical responses were assessed at 48, 96, and 144 h post-treatment. Significant reductions in lipid, protein, and carbohydrate levels were observed in the haemolymph and testes of treated larvae, indicating a potential impair

Venom composition and bioactive RF-amide peptide toxins of the saddleback caterpillar, Acharia stimulea (Lepidoptera: Limacodidae).

Limacodidae is a family of lepidopteran insects comprising >1500 species. More than half of these species produce pain-inducing defensive venoms in the larval stage, but little is known about their venom toxins. Recently, we characterised proteinaceous toxins from the Australian limacodid caterpillar Doratifera vulnerans, but it is unknown if the venom of this species is typical of other Limacodidae. Here, we use single animal transcriptomics and venom proteomics to investigate the venom of an iconic limacodid, the North American saddleback caterpillar Acharia stimulea. We identified 65 venom

Evaluating Flight Performance of Mass-Reared and Irradiated Navel Orangeworm (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) for Sterile Insect Technique.

Navel orangeworm (Pyralidae: Amyelois transitella) is a key pest of almonds and pistachios in California. Moths directly infest nuts which leads to reduced crop yield and quality, and infestation can predispose nuts to fungal pathogens that produce aflatoxins. While several integrated pest management strategies have been developed for A. transitella, studies have recently been initiated to explore the use of sterile insect technique (SIT) as an additional control tool. Mass-rearing, sterilization, and transportation methods originally developed for Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera: Gelech

Notable plesiomorphies and notable specializations: head structure of the primitive "tongue moth" Acanthopteroctetes unifascia (Lepidoptera: Acanthopteroctetidae).

The Acanthopteroctetidae are one of the first-originated family-group lineages within "tongue moths" (Lepidoptera-Glossata). The purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive account (based on whole mount preparations, serial sections, and Scanning electron microscopy) of the cephalic structure of an adult exemplar of the family, to supplement the sparse available information. Notable plesiomorphies include the retention of frontal retractors of the narrow labrum, a high supraocular index linked to strong development of cranio-mandibular ad- and abductors, and perhaps the unusually short
