A three-dimensional kinematic analysis of bipedal walking in a white-handed gibbon (Hylobates lar) on a horizontal pole and flat surface.

Gibbons, a type of lesser ape, are brachiators but also walk bipedally and without forelimb assistance, not only on the ground but also on tree branches. The arboreal bipedal walking strategy of the gibbons has been studied in previous studies in relation to two-dimensional (2D) kinematic analysis. However, because tree branches and the ground differ greatly in width, leading to a constrained foot contact point on the tree branches, gibbons must adjust their 3D joint motions of trunk and hindlimb on the tree branches. Furthermore, these motor adjustments could help minimize the center of mass

Rare but characteristic MRI Shoulder findings of chlamydia trachomatis-associated reactive arthritis.

Spondyloarthritis is an inflammatory disease characterised by tendon adhesions and sacroiliitis. Herein, we present a case of reactive arthritis (ReA) after Chlamydia infection. The condition was characterised by rotator cuff enthesitis accompanied by inflammation of the rotator cuff muscles and presence of contrast-enhanced lesions at several tendon attachments without pelvic sacroiliitis. Some studies have reported about shoulder joint involvement observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis. However, there are no reports on shoulder lesions

The arteries of the musculoskeletal system of siamangs, and a comparison with other hylobatids, greater apes, and humans.

Limited research on the gross anatomy of the blood vessels has been conducted on hylobatids, or lesser apes, so far. Here, we present a detailed study of the arteries of siamangs (Symphalangus) and compare our findings with data compiled from our previous studies as well as from the literature about other hylobatids, greater apes, and humans. In particular, a three-dimensional full-body computed tomography data set of a siamang neonate was analyzed in detail for this study, with notable findings in the head and neck, thorax, upper limb, abdomen and pelvis, and lower limb. Of the 62 arteries th

Exclusive Cerebellar and Leptomeningeal Metastases from Early Gastric Cancer 14 Months after Proximal Gastrectomy: An Autopsy Case Report.

We report a rare autopsy case in which the patient received gastrectomy after an endoscopic diagnosis of early gastric cancer, and had deteriorated due to exclusive metastatic cerebellar tumors identified 14 months after surgery. A 65-year-old male was diagnosed as having a 0-IIc-type early gastric cancer on the posterior wall of the upper stomach by gastrointestinal endoscopy in search of a cause of epigastralgia, and thus received proximal gastrectomy and pyloroplasty. Although the tumor was in the early stages and limited within the mucosal layer, adjuvant chemotherapy was started by using

Acute osteomyelitis--special cases with particularities related to specific locations.

In the clinical practice of paediatric orthopaedic surgery, there are a few cases of acute osteomyelitis which are not characterized by general and local infectious syndrome, making the diagnosis difficult and leading to severe complications. The specific locations, seldom affected, are the spine, pubis, ilium, ischium, sacrum and coccyx. Comparing with other regions, spinal osteomyelitis is less frequent (1:80). It affects not only children, sometimes aged under one year, but also adults of 40-50 years old. The infection may be located in the vertebral body or vertebral arch. Osteomyelitis of

Intravenous Tranexamic Acid Reduces Blood Loss and Transfusion Volume in Scoliosis Surgery for Spinal Muscular Atrophy: Results of a 20-Year Retrospective Analysis.

Intravenous tranexamic acid (TXA) has been administered to reduce intraoperative blood loss in scoliosis surgery. However, the therapeutic effect of TXA on spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) scoliosis surgery is not well demonstrated. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of intravenous TXA in SMA scoliosis surgery. From December 1993 to August 2020, 30 SMA patients who underwent scoliosis surgery (posterior fusion with fusion level of thoracic second or third to pelvis) were retrospectively enrolled and divided into the TXA group and non-TXA (control) group, with 15 patients in each g

CT-Based Evaluation of Volumetric Posterior Pelvic Bone Density with Implications for the Percutaneous Screw Fixation of the Sacroiliac Joint.

Background: Operative treatment of fragility fractures of the pelvis has become a gold standard. Preoperative planning, including the assessment of the pathway for iliosacral screws, is crucial. The anchorage of the screw depends on the bone quality. Some recent studies have concentrated on assessing bone mineral density (BMD) with the use of Hounsfield unit (HU) values obtained from CT scans. The aim of the present study is to determine the best sacral levels of S1-S3 on the pathway of iliosacral screws for sacroiliac joint fixation. Methods: Patients admitted to the Independent Public Health

Spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis in children.

Spondylolysis is a common problem found in 5% of the general population. The etiology is a combination of two factors: (1) hereditary predisposition resulting from a congenital deficiency of the sacrum and posterior structures and (2) developmental factors, such as trauma, posture, or certain repetitive activities, that may precipitate a stress fracture of the pars interarticularis in susceptible individuals. Although the lesion occurs during the growth years, few individuals develop symptoms during childhood and adolescence. For the occasional child who develops symptoms, the onset usually co

Morphology, Topography, and Composition of the Inferior Hypogastric Plexuses and Hypogastric Nerves: A Combined Anatomical, Histological and Immunohistochemical Study on 50 Human Cadavers.

A thorough understanding of pelvic autonomic anatomy is essential for contemporary neuroprotective surgical techniques, which strive to balance oncological radicality with the preservation of normal tissue function. Originally developed for prostatectomy and subsequently adapted for rectal resections and hysterectomy, these approaches underscore the critical importance of precise anatomical knowledge. Most research on true pelvis autonomic nerve plexuses published after 1990 emphasizes topography from a clinical perspective, aiming to map plexus organization to minimize iatrogenic injury and s

Oligosecretory myeloma with gastrointestinal tract involvement: an unusual presentation and literature review.

A woman in her 70s with vague gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms and unintentional weight loss was referred to endoscopy clinic for investigation and consideration of GI malignancy. CT of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis showed a suspicious mass in the oesophago-gastric junction with a lytic lesion on S1-S2 sacrum. A subsequent upper GI endoscopy revealed two raised, ulcerated tumours on the lesser curvature of the stomach. By the time an MRI of the whole spine was done which revealed multiple metastases involving thoracic, lumbar and sacral skeleton, she had developed leg weakness and paraesthesias

Vaginal development during 2nd gestational trimester: translational study in human female fetuses with disorders of the neural tube.

PURPOSE: One of the most common malformations of the central nervous system is related to embryonic neural tube alterations. We hypothesized that anencephaly affects the development of the vagina during the human second trimester of pregnancy. Our study compared the biometric parameters of the vagina in human female fetuses with neural tube defects. METHODS: In our study, 34 female fetuses were analyzed, 22 normal and 12 anencephalic, aged between 12 and 22 weeks post conception (WPC). After dissection of the pelvis and individualization of the genital tract, we evaluated the length and width

Jejunal obstruction due to rare internal hernia between skeletonized external iliac artery and vein as late complication of laparoscopic hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy-case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Internal herniation of small intestine in the lesser pelvis alongside iliac vasculature is a rare occurrence. Skeletonization of iliac vessels during pelvic lymph node dissection (LND), as part of surgical staging or treatment of patients with uterine, ovarian or urogenital cancer, is a strict prerequisite for orifice formation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old woman presented at the emergency department with complaints of constipation for the last 3 days and acute-onset abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting since few hours. She had a history of laparoscopic hysterectomy, bilateral

The anatomy of the male inferior hypogastric plexus: What should we know for nerve sparing surgery.

The aim of this study was to investigate the nerve supply to the structures in the male lesser pelvis and review its clinical relevance, especially during nerve sparing surgery. Three formalin-embalmed and 16 Thiel-embalmed male hemipelves were used. They were microdissected after repeated treatments with nitric acid diluted 1:10 with milliQ-water. The inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) is a fan-like structure lateral from the rectum on the fascia of the levator ani. Nerves emerging from the proximal, solid part of the plexus follow the internal iliacal vessels and reach the prostate from dorso

Insufficiency Fractures at Unusual Sites: A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: Insufficiency fractures (IFs) are a subtype of stress fractures commonly associated with osteoporosis and Vitamin D deficiency. These nontraumatic fractures often occur in the pelvis and spine, but the involvement of other unusual sites is also not very uncommon. Plain radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging scan are the most commonly used imaging modalities for the diagnosis of IF. CASE REPORT: We are presenting a series of five cases of IFs at unusual sites, along with a detailed literature review on this individual. A 50-year-old male patient with chronic kidney disease pr

[Is it necessary to use an isotopic diuretic renogram in grade II pyelocaliceal dilatations diagnosed with ultrasonography?].

PURPOSE: The increasing number of ultrasonographically detected asymptomatic, renal dilations have caused a lot of explorations to be performed in these patients. The Society of Fetal Urology proposed a four grades classification of echographic renal dilations and renographic studies are recommended in grades II to IV. However we have observed that grade II dilations don't evolve to obstruction. The aim of this work is to evaluate the obstruction rate in this group of patients, and the necessity or not of practising diuretic renography. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 42 children diagnosed o

Extrapulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM): clinicopathologic features in 22 cases.

We describe the lesions of extrapulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) affecting the lymph nodes of the mediastinum and retroperitoneum in 22 women (mean age +/- SD, 42.4+/-10.5 years). In most of these patients, the diagnosis of extrapulmonary LAM preceded that of pulmonary LAM, usually by 1 to 2 years. Eleven patients had distinct symptoms, including chylous pleural effusion and/or ascites, abdominal pain, and palpable abdominal masses. In the other 11 patients, the masses caused no symptoms. Well-circumscribed, encapsulated masses, measuring up to 20 cm in size, occurred in the mediastinu

Patterns of regional variation in the vertebral column of terrestrial salamanders.

Regional variation in the vertebral column of several species of salamanders (families Ambystomatidae, Salamandridae and Plethodontidae) is analyzed. Measurements of three dimensions, centrum length, prezygapophyseal width, and transverse process length, provide the data. Ontogenetic, interspecific, intergeneric and interfamilial patterns of positional variation are diagrammed and discussed. Distinctive patterns of variation characterize the families, genera, and to a lesser extent, the species. The patterns of ambystomatid salamanders are the most generalized, and probably reflect derivation

Rare gastroesophageal junction tumors or cysts of bronchial origin: A case report.

RATIONALE: Bronchogenic cysts (BCs) are rare congenital anomalies that often present without distinct clinical symptoms, complicating their diagnosis. However, as these cysts enlarge, they can cause symptoms due to compression of adjacent tissues and organs. In February 2024, a 32-year-old male was admitted to the Central Hospital of Suining City, Sichuan Province, China, with a preliminary diagnosis of a "gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor." A thorough pathological evaluation ultimately confirmed the diagnosis as a BC. The cyst was successfully excised through surgical intervention. PATIENT
