The effects of beta-endorphin(beta-End), an endogenous opioid, were tested in vitro on shape changes in polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Cell shape changes indicate alterations of the functional status of the cells. Within 2 min, beta-End but not the opioid alkaloid levorphanol or the antagonist, diprenorphine, induced a cell spreading. Subsequently, beta-End and levorphanol (10(-8) M), but not the dextrorotatory isomer, stimulated an elongation of the cells. Abscess imaging with leukocyte scintigraphy is described in a case report. Autologous leukocytes were separated from whole blood in a patient with localized inflammation in the perineal region and labeled with 99mTc, an ideal radionuclide for clinical examination with gamma camera. Scintigraphic investigations demonstrated a deep-lying anal abscess. The procedure may prove useful for detection of occult infections and may provide a new diagnostic approach in fever of unknown origin.

The effect of human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) on Chlamydia trachomatis was studied. Both trachoma (B/TW-5/OT) and lymphogranuloma venereum (L2/434/Bu) biotypes were rapidly inactivated by exposure to human PMNs. The phagocytic activity of polymorphonuclear leukocytes from 10 patients suffering from generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP) has been studied. It was shown by the modified method of agar cultures that in the peripheral blood of a healthy man, aged from 4 days to 40 years. The number of cell precursors of granulocytes and macrophages (CFU-C) varied from 0.05 to 6.38 in adults and from 0.2 to 2.9 in children per 105 nuclear cells. CFU-C content in the patients with infectious mononucleosis and acute leukemia was 0.5--14 and 0--0.3 per 105 nuclear cells, respectively.
