Base-Stabilized Phosphinidene Boranes by Silylium-Ion Abstraction.

We report the preparation of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilized compounds containing P=B double bonds. The reaction of the highly functionalized phosphinoborane Mes*(SiMe3 )P-B(Cl)Cp* with Lewis bases allows access to base-stabilized phosphinidene boranes Mes*P=B(L)Cp* (L=4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), NHC) by Me3 SiCl elimination. The formation of these species is shown to proceed through transient borylphosphide anions generated by Me3 Si abstraction.

A cryosolution infrared study of the complexes of fluoroform with ammonia and pyridine: Evidence for a C-H...N pseudo blue-shifting hydrogen bond.

Mid-infrared spectra of mixed solutions in liquid xenon containing fluoroform and either ammonia or pyridine have been investigated at temperatures between 173 and 213 K. For both Lewis bases, a new band is found in the CH stretching region at a frequency approximately 5 cm(-1) higher than that of monomer fluoroform, which is assigned to a complex between fluoroform and the Lewis base. A detailed analysis of the nu1/2nu(4) Fermi resonance in the proton donor shows that the blue shifts observed for the complexes are not caused by a strengthening of the CH bond during the complexation, but are d

P(PhCH(2)NCH(2)CH(2))(3)N: an efficient lewis base catalyst for the synthesis of propargylic alcohols and Morita-Baylis-Hillman adducts via aldehyde alkynylation.

Proazaphosphatrane P(PhCH(2)NCH(2)CH(2))(3)N (1a) is an efficient catalyst for the addition of aryl trimethylsilyl alkynes to a variety of aromatic, aliphatic, and heterocyclic aldehydes in THF at room temperature. The reaction conditions are mild and employ a low catalyst loading (ca. 5 mol %). Only propargylic alcohols were isolated in good to excellent isolated yields when electron-rich, electron-neutral, heterocyclic, and aliphatic aldehydes were employed, whereas beta-branched Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) type adducts were isolated with electron-deficient aromatic aldehydes after conventio

Relativistic Effects on NMR Parameters of Halogen-Bonded Complexes.

Relativistic effects are found to be important for the estimation of NMR parameters in halogen-bonded complexes, mainly when they involve the heavier elements, iodine and astatine. A detailed study of 60 binary complexes formed between dihalogen molecules (XY with X, Y = F, Cl, Br, I and At) and four Lewis bases (NH3, H2O, PH3 and SH2) was carried out at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ/aug-cc-pVTZ-PP computational level to show the extent of these effects. The NMR parameters (shielding and nuclear quadrupolar coupling constants) were computed using the relativistic Hamiltonian ZORA and compared to the val

P(V)-bis(amidophenolate) ligand cooperation: stoichiometric CO-bond cleavage in aldehydes and ketones.

The cooperation between a geometrically constrained, highly electrophilic phosphorus(V) center, and an electronically rich tetradentate bis(amidophenolate) ligand enables the cleavage of the CO bond from typical aldehydes and ketones delivering iminio phosphoramidate species. The amphiphilic nature of these products, which is demonstrated through their reaction with typical Lewis acids and bases, enables their use as a mild source of silylium cations from silanes, allowing the selective reductive coupling of aldehydes to ethers under catalytic conditions.

Zirconium alkoxides in catalysis.

This paper presents recent advances in the reactions catalyzed by zirconium alkoxide. Catalytic asymmetric reactions with chiral zirconium catalysts and redox reactions are first discussed. The diverse characteristics of zirconium alkoxides as Lewis acids, Brönsted bases, and nucleophiles, are key for promoting these unique reactions. Our recent development of novel reactions, one-pot synthesis of trans-1.2-diol derivatives and trans-beta-cyanohydrins from olefins, is also described. These reactions cannot be produced using other metals.

Aluminum in Frustrated Lewis Pair Chemistry.

This review article describes the development of the use of aluminum compounds in the chemistry of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) over the last 14 years. It also discusses the synthesis, reactivity and catalytic applications of intermolecular, intramolecular and so-called hidden FLPs with phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon Lewis bases. The intrinsically higher acidity of aluminum compounds compared to their boron analogs opens up different reaction pathways. The results are presented in a more or less chronological order. It is shown that Al FLPs react with a variety of polar and non-polar substra

Value of combining activated brain FDG-PET and cardiac MIBG for the differential diagnosis of dementia: differentiation of dementia with Lewy bodies and Alzheimer disease when the diagnoses based on clinical and neuroimaging criteria are difficult.

Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most common cause of dementia. The diagnosis of DLB is particularly important because these patients show good response to cholinesterase inhibitors. Clinical and neuroimaging criteria for DLB have not been acceptable for predictive accuracy. We report a case of progressive dementia in which the differentiation of DLB and Alzheimer disease (AD) on the basis of clinical criteria alone was not possible. The patient was admitted to the hospital because he became worse after he had started treatment for severe AD. Both MRI and brain magnetic resonance

Dual-functional SiO2@Cr2O3-C18 sorbent combining Lewis acid-base and hydrophobic interactions for the selective SPE-LC-MS/MS determination of perfluoroalkyl carboxylates in protein-rich biological matrices.

BACKGROUND: The growing concern of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or "forever chemicals," with serious health implications across the globe necessitates the development of sophisticated analytical techniques for the sensitive analysis of these compounds in biological samples. However, the critical limitations of common SPE sorbents in terms of low selectivity, poor recoveries in biological samples containing high protein content, and high susceptibility to matrix effects in the form of ion suppression have hindered the analysis of these compounds. To overcome these problems, a new dual-func

Modulating the intrinsic reactivity of molecules through non-covalent interactions.

Non-covalent interactions unavoidably involve a certain disturbance of the electronic density of the interacting systems. Such perturbations are particularly strong when dealing with electron deficient systems such as boron, beryllium, magnesium (pre-p elements) or calcium (a pre-d element) derivatives. Indeed, these compounds have been shown to modify the intrinsic reactivity of the systems interacting with them. In the first part of this paper, we present an overview on (i) how electron deficient systems, acting as Lewis acids, modulate the intrinsic acidity of Lewis bases, explaining for in

Green chemistry strategies for CO2 valorization: Impact of substituents, solvents and catalysts on the cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides forming cyclic carbonates.

A theoretical study of the reaction forming a cyclic carbonate from the cycloaddition of CO2 with a typical substituted epoxide, was carried out using first principles methodologies. As epoxide, we considered trans 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-methoxy epoxyethane, exhibiting an optimal reactivity for cycloaddition with CO2. We found that this reaction exhibits a high energy barrier in the gas phase, thus requiring an activation method. We also investigated the role of various substituted epoxides (mono- and disubstituted) and solvent types, including nonpolar, polar protic, and polar aprotic solvents

The halogen(I) complex of astatine: a theoretical perspective on structural and bonding properties.

Halonium ions (X+) can interact with two Lewis bases to form linear 3c4e halogen-bonded halogen(I) complexes ([D⋯X⋯D]+), which have been found to be useful in organic synthesis and supramolecular chemistry. However, current research is limited to lighter halogens (F, Cl, Br, and I) and does not include the At element owing to the lack of stable isotopes for experimental studies. Herein, we explore the structural and bonding properties of an At-mediated 3c4e halogen(I) complex ([D⋯At⋯D]+) and the effects of various Lewis bases, substituents, and halogens using relativistic density functional th

Phosphorus-Nitrogen Heterocycles Derived from Chelating N-Donor Ligands: Historical Advances, Recent Highlights, and Outlook.

The exploration of phosphorus-nitrogen heterocycles derived from chelating N-donor ligands is an area of research that has lagged behind the development of similar heterocycles based on other main group elements, most notably boron. The fact that phosphorus and nitrogen are both group 15 elements and that their compounds are most commonly viewed as Lewis bases likely contributes to this observation. However, through judicious ligand design and creative use of phosphorus sources that render phosphorus as Lewis acidic and/or electron poor, a variety of heterocyclic architectures are possible. In

Borenium Ion Equivalents Stabilized by BICAAC and Their Implementation as Catalysts in Hydrosilylation of Carbonyls.

Hydride abstraction from the borane adduct, (BICAAC) ⋅ BH3 afforded the hydride bridged dinuclear borenium ion equivalent complexes 1 and 2 that have been characterized by various spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques followed by the assessment of Lewis acidity using the Gutmann-Beckett method. The single crystal X-ray structure of complex 2 revealed the presence of discrete ions in the solid state. The complex (BICAAC) ⋅ BH2(OTf) (3), obtained from the reaction of (BICAAC) ⋅ BH3 with MeOTf, formed the corresponding boronium cations [(BICAAC) ⋅ BH2(L)]+(OTf)- on reaction with Lewis bases

Planar bismuth triamides: a tunable platform for main group Lewis acidity and polymerization catalysis.

Geometric deformation in main group compounds can be used to elicit unique properties including strong Lewis acidity. Here we report on a family of planar bismuth(iii) complexes (cf. typically pyramidal structure for such compounds), which show a geometric Lewis acidity that can be further tuned by varying the steric and electronic features of the triamide ligand employed. The structural dynamism of the planar bismuth complexes was probed in both the solid and solution phase, revealing at least three distinct modes of intermolecular association. A modified Gutmann-Beckett method was used to as

Heterolytic activation of H-H and H-OH bonds on Lewis acid-base site pairs at metal oxide surfaces: site structures, through-space interactions, and Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi scaling relations.

Scaling relations between activation barriers and thermodynamic properties in surface catalysis require that the binding centers that stabilize products can be accessed at transition states (TS). These requirements are not met, in general, in heterolytic H-X (X = H, OH) cleavage steps mediated by concerted interactions with Lewis acid-base pairs in oxides. Density functional theory shows that residual covalency precludes stabilization of Hδ+-Hδ- fragments at the TS at the optimal binding modes available in the product state (PS). The distances required by electron sharing at the TS are replace

σ-Holes and σ-lumps direct the Lewis basic and acidic interactions of noble metal nanoparticles: introducing regium bonds.

Using local DFT-based probes for electrostatic as well as charge transfer/polarization interactions, we are able to characterize Lewis basic and acidic sites on copper, silver and gold nanoparticles. The predictions obtained using the DFT-probes are compared to the interaction energies of the electron donating (CO, H2O, NH3 and H2S) and the electron accepting (BH3, BF3, HCl [H-down] and Na+) compounds. The probes include the local electron attachment energy [E(r)], the average local ionization energy [Ī(r)], and the electrostatic potential [V(r)] and are evaluated on isodensity surfaces locate

Quenched Lewis Acidity: Studies on the Medium Dependent Fluorescence of Zinc(II) Complexes.

Three new zinc(II) coordination units [Zn(1-3)] based on planar-directing tetradentate Schiff base-like ligands H2 (1-3) were synthesized. Their solid-state structures were investigated by single crystal X-ray diffraction, showing the tendency to overcome the square-planar coordination sphere by axial ligation. Affinity in solution towards axial ligation has been tested by extended spectroscopic studies, both in the absorption and emission mode. The electronic spectrum of the pyridine complex [Zn(1)(py)] has been characterized by MC-PDFT to validate the results of extended TD-DFT studies. Gree

Selective Trapping of In(III) Ions under σ-π* Bond Synergistic Effects by Modulating Lewis Basicity of Capture Sites on Nanofibers.

Effectively selective recovery and separation of indium from alternative resources are of great environmental and economic significance. Although adsorption plays a critical role in this process, the design of highly selective capture sites remains a great challenge. Inspired by molecular orbital theory and hard and soft acids and bases theory (HSAB), we recognize that the nonequivalent orbital hybridization of In(III) ions renders them susceptible to deformation, exhibiting softer Lewis acidity. Herein, the thioacetamide-modified nanofiber (TAANF), with the O═C─NH─C═S as the capture sites, wa
