Color temperature of light-emitting diode lighting matters for optimum growth and welfare of broiler chickens.

Light-emitting diode (LED) light bulbs are becoming more prevalent in broiler production as they are dimmable and more energy efficient than compact fluorescent lamps. Although there is some research on how spectrum of light can affect production, little has been conducted on how it may affect stress, and behavior. To determine how different spectrum of light produced by LED lights could affect production, stress and behavior we raised broilers under either 2700 K (WARM) or 5000 K (COOL) color temperature LED bulbs. To determine stress susceptibility bilateral asymmetry (ASYM, n=128), plasma c

Quantifying environmental modulation of arousal state in road tunnels: Implications for lighting, geometry, and safety design.

OBJECTIVE: Road tunnels pose safety risks through abrupt luminance transitions and visual monotony that induce arousal fluctuations, yet the joint effects of lighting and geometry remain unclear. This study aims to quantify these effects via an integrated framework linking environmental conditions to drivers' arousal states. METHODS: This study developed an integrated arousal-perception (IAP) framework to explain how tunnel environmental conditions modulate drivers' arousal states and associated safety risks. Four indicators (pupil area, heart rate, reaction time, and visual recognition dista

The privacy and safety paradox regarding technical compliance and employer enforcement of home office lighting requirements.

The rapid shift to remote work following the COVID-19 pandemic transformed private residential spaces into permanent workplaces, often without professional ergonomic oversight. While occupational lighting is strictly regulated by standards such as EN 12,464-1, these norms are legally unenforceable in private homes due to privacy regulations. This study addresses the "Privacy-Safety Paradox" by conducting a comparative legal analysis of employer responsibilities versus privacy rights in the EU (including France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Poland) and the USA. It presents a case series analys

Lighting in intensive care units: A systematic review of patient outcomes and directions for future research.

OBJECTIVES: Patients admitted to ICUs are frequently exposed to disrupted light-dark cycles due to limited daylight exposure and inappropriate electrical lighting in terms of intensity, duration, timing, and spectral distribution. Such disruptions can impair circadian entrainment, thereby negatively affecting patient outcomes. Consequently, lighting interventions have been proposed to optimise the ICU environment and patient outcomes, but guidance for ICU lighting design remains limited. This review aimed to synthesise research from the past 10 years, examining the impact of lighting condition

Evaluating Environmental Ward Performance: Insights From Acoustic, Lighting, and Temperature Monitoring in a Palliative Care Unit.

The physical environment of inpatient wards plays a critical role in supporting rest and care delivery. In palliative care, environmental conditions such as sound, lighting, and temperature directly influence patient comfort, circadian rhythms, and staff performance. However, few studies have quantitatively assessed these factors in functioning palliative care units (PCUs).ObjectivesTo evaluate the spatial and environmental performance of an acute PCU through sensor-based monitoring of acoustic exposure, light levels, and temperature.MethodA postoccupancy evaluation approach was employed to as

Toward adaptation-aware optimization of tunable multi-LED lighting: modeling illuminance-dependent hue-bin preference targets.

Adaptive spectral tuning of solid-state lighting requires perceptually grounded models of color preference that account for adaptation. This study quantifies how adaptation illuminance at three levels modulates preferred local chroma and hue shifts in four TM-30 hue bins (1: red, 4: yellow, 6: green, 12: blue) using ecologically valid, multi-object stimuli and a dual-lighting design that allowed independent modulation of object color appearance and adaptation illumination. Pooled observer ratings from 51 participants were modeled with bin-wise bivariate Gaussian functions in local chroma-hue s

Lighting up Ferroptosis Propagating via the Lung-Heart Axis Exacerbates Cardiovascular Disease Through in Situ Imaging.

Cigarette smoke (CS)-induced lung injury is a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs), with both diseases sharing a common pathogenesis that encompasses ferroptosis. Studies have shown that ferroptosis can propagate in a wave-like manner across cell populations; however, whether and how this propagation participates in the cross-organ communication between lung injury and ASCVDs remains unknown. Here we developed two near-infrared fluorescent probes, Cy-F-1 and Cy-F-2, with lung-targeting and plaque-targeting properties, respectively. Utilizing in vivo molecular fluore

Efficient 1,3-Propanediol production from lignocellulosic hydrolysate via g-C3N4-L. Reuteri lighting-driven biohybrid system.

A light-responsive biohybrid system was constructed by coupling graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) with Lactobacillus reuteri to enhance 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PDO) biosynthesis. Under simulated sunlight, the g-C3N4/L. reuteri biohybrid system achieved a 1,3-PDO titer of 11.3 g/L within 48 h in synthesis medium, representing a 66 % increase compared to dark controls (6.8 g/L). Characterization results confirmed strong interfacial coupling and efficient electron transfer between the photocatalyst and microbial cells. Notably, the light-driven biohybrid system increased the intracellular NADH/NAD+

An ipRGC-influenced/Non-Visual Spectral Occupant Model for lighting design, Part 2: Photobiological model implementation.

This paper pilots a method for the assessment of non-visual lighting effects based upon annual full-spectrum lighting calculations termed an ipRGC-influenced/Non-Visual Spectral Occupant Model (iNSOM). iNSOM calculates annualized melanopic irradiance, described in our previous paper, and derives seasonal and time-of-day metrics based on a collection of photobiological models from Postnova et al., Abeysuria et al. and Tekieh et al. to predict circadian dynamics, alertness and melatonin levels due to light exposure. Quantitative outputs of these metrics and novel spatial visualizations are then

Daylight and Electric Lighting in Primary and Secondary School Classrooms in the UK-An Observational Study.

Only a few recent studies report direct assessment or monitoring of light levels in the indoor learning environment, and no consensus exists on minimum exposures for children's health. For instance, myopia is a common progressive condition, with genetic and environmental risk factors. Reduced daylight exposure, electric lighting changes, increased near-work for school children, greater academic focus, and use of display screens and white boards may have important detrimental influences. Published assessment methods had varied limitations, such as incomplete compliance from participants wearing

Pulsed lighting for adults with Dyslexia: very limited impact, confined to individuals with severe reading deficits.

The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of pulsed lighting on the reading performance of young adults with dyslexia. A total of 42 participants were recruited, including individuals diagnosed with developmental dyslexia and adults without reported reading difficulties. The severity of each participant's reading deficit was assessed on a continuous scale using a reading impairment score, derived from four reading tests: an isolated-word reading test, a pseudoword reading test, and two reading fluency tests. The impairment score ranged from 0 (no impairment) to 4 (severe impairment acro

Ultra-low Ultraviolet Radiation in Office Lighting Can Moderate Seasonal Vitamin D Cycle: A Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation initiates vitamin D synthesis in the skin, making sun exposure a major source of vitamin D. We aimed to determine whether office lighting containing ultra-low levels of UV-B radiation could modify the winter decline in vitamin D status in the UK, while being safe and well tolerated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty commercial office desk lamps were modified with the addition of UV-B LEDs. Ten hospital office administrative staff received UV-modified lamps with UV-on, and 10 staff received identical placebo lamps with UV switched off, in a double-blin

White light-emitting diodes (LEDs) at domestic lighting levels and retinal injury in a rat model.

BACKGROUND: Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) deliver higher levels of blue light to the retina than do conventional domestic light sources. Chronic exposure to high-intensity light (2,000-10,000 lux) has previously been found to result in light-induced retinal injury, but chronic exposure to relatively low-intensity (750 lux) light has not been previously assessed with LEDs in a rodent model. OBJECTIVE: We examined LED-induced retinal neuronal cell damage in the Sprague-Dawley rat using functional, histological, and biochemical measurements. METHODS: We used blue LEDs (460 nm) and full-spectrum

Effect of dietary fat and environmental lighting on the phospholipid molecular species of rat photoreceptor membranes.

We have previously shown that retinas of albino rats adapt to bright cyclic light (500-800 lx) by lowering the levels of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) in their rod outer segment (ROS) phospholipids. In the present study, we addressed the role of dietary fat in this process. Pregnant rats were kept in 1 lx or 250 lx cyclic illuminance (12L:12D) and fed diets containing 10% (by weight) of either hydrogenated coconut oil (COC, no n-3 or n-6 fatty acids), linseed oil (LIN, n-3 and n-6 fatty acids), or safflower oil (SAF, only n-6 fatty acids), starting 4 days before delivery. Pups were weaned at

Effect of lighting treatment on the productivity, health, behavior and sexual maturity of heavy male turkeys.

1. Turkey poults (1620) were used to compare the effects of three lighting programmes on heavy strain males reared to 188 d: constant light (24L:0D, CON); increasing light (6L:18D at 7 d gradually increasing to 20L:4D by 63 d, INC); a pattern identical to INC followed by a decrease in daylength from 84 d to 10L:14D at 112 d (DID). 2. Lighting affected growth pattern but had no effect on body weight at 118 d or overall food to gain ratio. 3. Both INC and DID lighting reduced overall mortality in comparison to CON light primarily because of a reduction in the incidence of skeletal disease and sp
