Uncovering neural distinctions and commodities between two creativity subsets: A meta-analysis of fMRI studies in divergent thinking and insight using activation likelihood estimation.

The dual-process theory that two different systems of thought coexist in creative thinking has attracted considerable attention. In the field of creative thinking, divergent thinking (DT) is the ability to produce multiple solutions to open-ended problems in a short time. It is mainly considered an associative and fast process. Meanwhile, insight, the new and unexpected comprehension of close-ended problems, is frequently marked as a deliberate and time-consuming thinking process requiring concentrated effort. Previous research has been dedicated to revealing their separate neural mechanisms,

Marginal, conditional, and pseudo likelihood ratio approaches for biomarker combination to predict a binary disease outcome.

It is a common practice in public health research that multiple biomarkers are collected to diagnose or predict a disease outcome. A natural question is how to combine multiple biomarkers to improve the diagnostic accuracy. It has been shown by Neyman-Pearson lemma that the likelihood ratio statistic achieves the optimal AUC in theory. However, practical difficulty often lies in the estimation of the multivariate density functions. We propose three novel methods for the biomarker combination, with the idea of breaking down the joint densities to a series of univariate densities. The marginal l

Shared increased entropy of brain signals across patients with different mental illnesses: A coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Entropy is a measurement of brain signal complexity. Studies have found increased/decreased entropy of brain signals in psychiatric patients. There is no consistent conclusion regarding the relationship between the entropy of brain signals and mental illness. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to identify consistent abnormalities in the brain signal entropy in patients with different mental illnesses. We conducted a systematic search to collect resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) studies in patients with psychiatric disorders. This work identified 9 eligible rs-fMRI

Altered spontaneous brain activity in major depressive disorder: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Wide application of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in psychiatric research has revealed that major depressive disorder (MDD) manifest abnormal neural activities in several brain regions involving key resting state networks. However, inconsistent results have hampered our understanding of the exact neuropathology associated with MDD. Therefore, our aim was to conduct a meta-analysis to identify the consistent vulnerable brain regions of MDD in resting state, and to reveal the potential pathogenesis of MDD. METHODS: A systematic review analysis was conduc

Copula-based semiparametric regression method for bivariate data under general interval censoring.

This research is motivated by discovering and underpinning genetic causes for the progression of a bilateral eye disease, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), of which the primary outcomes, progression times to late-AMD, are bivariate and interval-censored due to intermittent assessment times. We propose a novel class of copula-based semiparametric transformation models for bivariate data under general interval censoring, which includes the case 1 interval censoring (current status data) and case 2 interval censoring. Specifically, the joint likelihood is modeled through a two-parameter Arc

Statistical analysis plan for management of hypertension and multiple risk factors to enhance cardiovascular health in Singapore: the SingHypertension pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular disease (O'Lone E, Viecelli AK, Craig JC, Tong A, Sautenet B, Herrington WG, et al., Am J Kidney Dis 76(1):109-20, 2020) remains the leading cause of death in Singapore. Uncontrolled hypertension confers the highest attributable risk of CVD and remains a significant public health issue with sub-optimal blood pressure (BP) control rates. The aim of the trial is to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a multicomponent intervention (MCI) versus usual care on lowering BP among adults with uncontrolled hypertension visiting primary care clinics in Singap

Occurrence of Brucella ceti in striped dolphins from Italian Seas.

Brucella ceti infections have been increasingly reported in cetaceans, although a very limited characterization of Mediterranean Brucella spp. isolates has been previously reported and relatively few data exist about brucellosis among cetaceans in Italy. To address this gap, we studied 8 cases of B. ceti infection in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded along the Italian coastline from 2012 to 2018, investigated thanks to the Italian surveillance activity on stranded cetaceans. We focused on cases of stranding in eastern and western Italian seas, occurred along the Apulia (N = 6),

Application of a likelihood ratio test based method for safety signal detection to left ventricular assist devices.

Effective post-market safety surveillance of medical devices is critical for public health. However, many current statistical methods for safety signal detection do not control for type I error when assessing multiple device and adverse event (AE) combinations. This can result in increased false signals, underscoring the need for more robust statistical methods. Moreover, the duration of medical device use can be an important factor to consider in safety surveillance. In this study, we adapted a likelihood ratio test (LRT) based method, which was initially developed and applied to drugs, to id

Gray matter atrophy in narcolepsy: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

The authors reviewed the literature on the use of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in narcolepsy magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies via the use of a meta-analysis of neuroimaging to identify concordant and specific structural deficits in patients with narcolepsy as compared with healthy subjects. We used PubMed to retrieve articles published between January 2000 and March 2014. The authors included all VBM research on narcolepsy and compared the findings of the studies by using gray matter volume (GMV) or gray matter concentration (GMC) to index differences in gray matter. Regression models for mixed Poisson and continuous longitudinal data.

In this article we develop flexible regression models in two respects to evaluate the influence of the covariate variables on the mixed Poisson and continuous responses and to evaluate how the correlation between Poisson response and continuous response changes over time. A scenario for dealing with regression models of mixed continuous and Poisson responses when the heterogeneous variance and correlation changing over time exist is proposed. Our general approach is first to jointly build marginal model and to check whether the variance and correlation change over time via likelihood ratio tes

Plague dynamics are driven by climate variation.

The bacterium Yersinia pestis causes bubonic plague. In Central Asia, where human plague is still reported regularly, the bacterium is common in natural populations of great gerbils. By using field data from 1949-1995 and previously undescribed statistical techniques, we show that Y. pestis prevalence in gerbils increases with warmer springs and wetter summers: A 1 degrees C increase in spring is predicted to lead to a >50% increase in prevalence. Climatic conditions favoring plague apparently existed in this region at the onset of the Black Death as well as when the most recent plague pandemi

Statistical methods for the blood beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test.

The blood beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT) is a modification of the standard lymphocyte proliferation test that is used to identify persons who may have chronic beryllium disease. A major problem in the interpretation of BeLPT test results is outlying data values among the replicate well counts (approximately 7%). A long-linear regression model is used to describe the expected well counts for each set of Be exposure conditions, and the variance of the well counts is proportional to the square of the expected count. Two outlier-resistant regression methods are used to estimate st

Targeted maximum likelihood estimation for psychological research: From causal identification to statistical inference.

Causal questions have long been central to psychological research, particularly in randomized experiments, while formal causal-inference methods are increasingly being applied to observational and quasi-experimental data. Common outcome-regression and propensity-score approaches can be sensitive to nuisance-model misspecification, whereas flexible machine learning alone does not ensure valid target-parameter estimation or inference. Targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE) addresses this estimation problem by combining outcome and treatment information through an efficient-influence-funct

Regression analysis of interval-censored competing risks data with missing causes of failure: A direct likelihood approach.

Regression analysis of interval-censored competing risks data is often required and plays an important role in many areas. For the situation, in addition to competing risk and interval censoring, another feature that makes the analysis difficult is that the failure cause may be unknown or missing. Most existing methods for addressing these challenges rely on two-stage estimation procedures, which could suffer efficiency loss and high computational cost. To overcome these, we propose a direct likelihood approach based on a mixture model framework. The proposed method accounts for both competing

Confidence Intervals for a Proportion Estimated From Pooled Samples Based on Firth's Corrected Score.

Interval estimation of a proportion estimated from testing of pooled samples has been studied by a variety of researchers, who have examined both exact and asymptotic methods. Recent work in point estimation has seen the use of Firth's correction to maximum likelihood estimation to reduce bias effectively. We consider the Firth-corrected score statistic, using either expected or observed information, as the first derivative function of a penalized likelihood and develop score-based confidence intervals wholly within this framework. We evaluate their performance, comparing them by information t

Shape-constrained semiparametric maximum likelihood for backward time under an accelerated failure time model.

We investigate semiparametric maximum likelihood inference for backward (current-duration, backward-recurrence) times arising in cross-sectional (prevalent-cohort) sampling under an accelerated failure time (AFT) model for the underlying forward lifetime. A key observation is that, after a suitable transformation, the baseline density of backward times is intrinsically monotone non-increasing. Exploiting this shape constraint yields a profile likelihood estimator for the regression parameter β together with a nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of the monotone density via the Gr

The Neural Blueprint of Novelty: A Meta-Analytic Dissection of Active and Passive Novelty Processing Networks.

BACKGROUND: Detecting novel environmental events is a fundamental survival mechanism, enabling organisms to identify and respond to salient changes. This function can operate in at least two broad modes, differing in task demands: active and passive novelty processing. Active processing involves explicitly recognizing novel or deviant stimuli and engaging goal-directed, top-down attentional control and memory-related systems. In contrast, passive processing is driven primarily by bottom-up attentional reorienting and does not necessarily require an explicit response or conscious evaluation. Th

Development of Dose-Response Models for the Ingestion Exposure Route and Stillbirth Outcome for Listeria monocytogenes.

Foodborne listeriosis can cause stillbirth in pregnant individuals, prompting numerous population-specific food safety guidelines. Dose-response models are employed in quantitative microbial risk assessments (QMRAs) to develop such guidelines; however, pregnant hosts are under-considered when developing dose-response models, and the few published dose-response models for pregnant hosts do not consider the biological plausibility of the model. Therefore, this study aims to develop biologically plausible dose-response models for pregnant hosts using infection and stillbirth as health outcomes. T
