BACKGROUND: Patients with indwelling devices in the intensive care unit (ICU) face a heightened risk of infections, particularly central-line associated blood stream infection (CLABSI). With the aim of enhancing ICU prevention strategies, this study assessed CLABSI incidence, key pathogens, and their resistence profiles.
METHOD: The retrospective study analyzed patients with central line catheter (CLC) from 2021 to 2023. Patients' demographic details, CLC site, ICU stay, and blood culture reports including resistance were analyzed.
RESULTS: Among 3,761 patients, CLABSI incidence rates were 6

A novel nonconjugative plasmid of 28,489 bp from a porcine linezolid-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolate was completely sequenced. This plasmid harbored a novel type of multiresistance gene cluster that comprised the resistance genes lnu(B), lsa(E), spw, aadE, aphA3, and two copies of erm(B), which account for resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, pleuromutilins, streptomycin, spectinomycin, and kanamycin/neomycin. Structural comparisons suggested that this plasmid might have developed from other enterococcal plasmids by insertion element (IS)-mediated interplasmid recombi

A novel ABC transporter gene, vga(C), was identified on the 14,365-bp multiresistance plasmid pKKS825 in a porcine methicillin (meticillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolate of sequence type 398. The vga(C) gene encodes a 523-amino-acid protein which confers resistance not only to streptogramin A antibiotics but also to lincosamides and pleuromutilins. Plasmid pKKS825 also carries the resistance genes aadD, tet(L), and dfrK, which may enable the coselection of vga(C) under selective pressure by kanamycin/neomycin, tetracyclines, and trimethoprim.

Staphylococcus pasteuri is a coagulase-negative, Gram positive organism which is emerging as an agent of nosocomial infections and a blood derivatives contaminant, though its role in causing human disease mostly remains controversial. Despite the paucity of isolates recovered, this bacterium has recently appeared to express resistance against several classes of antibiotic compounds, such as methicillin/oxacillin, macrolides, lincosamides, streptogramins, tetracyclines, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, fosfomycin, as well as quaternary ammonium compounds. Also, authors will discuss some essential

A quadriplex real-time polymerase chain reaction assay was developed for detecting pneumococci, penicillin susceptibility, and macrolide/lincosamide resistance. The assay was sensitive for all 4 targets (<10 copies) and correlated with antimicrobial susceptibilities in 172/180 isolates and 28/29 culture-positive clinical specimens. For 29 lytA-positive culture-negative specimens, the assay allowed interpretation of antimicrobial susceptibility.

Several gastrointestinal diseases show a sex imbalance, although the underlying (patho)physiological mechanisms behind this are not well understood. The gut microbiome may be involved in this process, forming a complex interaction with host immune system, sex hormones, medication and other environmental factors. Here we performed sex-specific analyses of fecal microbiota composition in 1135 individuals from a population-based cohort. The overall gut microbiome composition of females and males was significantly different (p = 0.001), with females showing a greater microbial diversity (p = 0.009

Forty-six Aeromonas spp. strains were isolated from fresh fish and investigated for their antimicrobial susceptibility, detection of Class 1 integrons by PCR, and arrangement of gene cassettes. Selected isolates were further characterized by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-PCR. Twenty isolates were found to carry Class 1 integrons. Amplification of the variable regions of the integrons revealed diverse bands ranging in size from 150 to 1,958 pb. Sequence analysis of the variable regions revealed the presence of several gene cassettes, such as adenylyl transferases (aadA2 and aa

Structurally unrelated antibiotics MLSB (macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B) compromised with clinically resistant pathogens because of the cross-resistance resulting from the structural modification of rRNA A2058. The structure-activity relationships of a novel 3-O-descladinose azithromycin chemotype conjugating with nucleobases were fully explored with the aid of engineered E. coli SQ110DTC and SQ110LPTD. The conjugates of macrolides with nucleobases, especially adenine, displayed antibacterial superiority over telithromycin, azithromycin and clindamycin against rRNA A2058/2059-mutated en

The Staphylococcus aureus small-colony variant (SCV) phenotype has been associated with relapsing and antibiotic-refractory infections. However, little is known about the activities of antibiotics on clinical SCVs. Here, we demonstrated that SCVs without detectable auxotrophies were at least as susceptible to most β-lactam and non-β-lactam antibiotics in vitro as their corresponding clonally identical strains with a normal phenotype. After prolonged incubation, a regrowth phenomenon has been observed in gradient diffusion inhibition zones irrespective of the strains' phenotype.

Current problems of antibiotic resistance in the Bacteroides fragilis group are reviewed. The original susceptibility (before 1976) of this group of strict anaerobic microorganisms to some beta-lactams, tetracyclines and lincosamides is presently severely damaged, and new mechanisms of resistance, such the enzymatic inactivation of chloramphenicol, seem to arise. Conjugative transfer of chromosomal resistance genes appears to be the main strategy for the spread of resistance and in various cases plasmids are involved. The origin of such resistance genes remains obscure. There is a possibility

Gram-positive catalase-negative cocci (GPCNCs) are significant components of the genital microbiota in sheep and goats. However, characterizing them can be difficult due to overlapping culture features and the limited information on their susceptibility to antibiotics. In this study, 97 foreskin and 13 vaginal swabs were investigated using a culturomic approach. Of 110 animals, 76 (69.09 %) hosted GPCNCs, including strains from Streptococcaceae (37, 33.64 %), Aerococcaceae (30, 27.27 %), Enterococcaceae (6, 5.45 %) and other minor species. With increasing antimicrobial resistance rates in live

Mycoplasmas are intrinsically resistant to antimicrobials targeting the cell wall (fosfomycin, glycopeptides, or β-lactam antibiotics) and to sulfonamides, first-generation quinolones, trimethoprim, polymixins, and rifampicin. The antibiotics most frequently used to control mycoplasmal infections in animals are macrolides and tetracyclines. Lincosamides, fluoroquinolones, pleuromutilins, phenicols, and aminoglycosides can also be active. Standardization of methods used for determination of susceptibility levels is difficult since no quality control strains are available and because of species-

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an important issue for both wildlife conservation and public health. The purpose of this study was to screen for AMR in fecal bacteria isolated from northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus), a species that is an ecologically and economically important natural resource in the southern United States. The antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of 45 Escherichia coli isolates, 20 Enterococcus faecalis isolates, and 10 Enterococcus faecium isolates were determined using the SensititerTM microbroth dilution minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) plate, AVIAN1F. The occurrence of antibiotic residues in the environment has received considerable attention because of their potential to select for bacterial resistance. The overuse of antibiotics in human medicine and animal production results in antibiotic residues entering the aquatic environment, but concentrations are currently not well determined. This study investigates the occurrence of antibiotics in groundwater in areas strongly related to agriculture and the antibiotic treatment of animals. A multiresidue method was validated according to EU Regulation 2021/808, to allow (semi-)quantitative analy

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify the molecular mechanism of macrolide resistance in the actinomycete Rhodococcus equi, a major equine pathogen and zoonotic agent causing opportunistic infections in people.
METHODS: Macrolide-resistant (n = 62) and macrolide-susceptible (n = 62) clinical isolates of R. equi from foals in the USA were studied. WGS of 18 macrolide-resistant and 6 macrolide-susceptible R. equi was performed. Representative sequences of all known macrolide resistance genes identified to date were used to search the genome assemblies for putative homologues.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major public health concern, especially with regard to bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Dentists are responsible for approximately 10% of all antibiotic prescriptions. In addition, there seems to be a lack of awareness of potential resistance toward antiseptics and biocides such as chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) or cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), which are commonly used in dental practice but also included in over-the-counter products. In comparison to the gut microbiome, only a small number of studies have investigated the impact of antibiotics on the

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance has rendered certain species of Mycobacterium difficult to treat clinically, particularly the nontuberculous Mycobacterium and Mycobacterium abscessus. While veterinary medicine and human medicine share many classes of antibiotics, there are several antibiotics which are uniquely licensed to veterinary medicine but not human medicine. It was, therefore, the aim of this study to examine the action of eight veterinary antibiotics to a population of multi- and pan-resistant M. abscessus, isolated from the sputum of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF).
METHODS:

BACKGROUND: Staphylococci are one of the most common pathogens in nasocomial and community-acquired infections. Methicillin-resistant staphylococci are known to be resistant against all beta-lactam antibiotics. Therefore, non-beta-lactam antibiotics such as macrolide and lincosamides can be used. Resistance to those antibiotics may lead to therapeutic failure. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B (MLSB ) resistance by using D-test in staphylococcal isolates from various clinical samples.
METHODS: Seventy-one methicillin-resi
