LET dependence of yield ratios of radiation-induced intra- and interchromosomal aberrations in human lymphocytes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the LET dependence of various yield ratios of intra- and interchromosomal aberrations in order to quantify proximity effects for illegitimate rejoining of chromosome breaks. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Calculations are based on 13 human lymphocyte data sets obtained from in vitro irradiation experiments with various radiation qualities covering an LET range of 0.5 to 150keV/microm. A total of 93000 first-division metaphases was analysed for all categories of chromosome-type aberrations. RESULTS: No dose dependence was found for the various yield ratios of chromosomal aberr

Chromosomal aberrations induced in human lymphocytes by high-LET irradiation.

High linear energy transfer (LET) particles are more efficient than sparsely ionizing radiations in inducing chromosomal aberrations, in particular complex rearrangements. We analysed R-banded chromosome rearrangements in human lymphocytes irradiated with several ions having a wide range of LET (31.3-1435 keV/micron). The frequency of chromosome breaks unrejoined or inferred from observed rearrangements, and of complex rearrangements induced by a single particle, increased with the LET up to about 100-150 keV/micron and seemed to level off for higher LET values. Additional study was focused on

Surface spectroscopy of apatitic materials: limitations and concerns.

The use of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy for the study of biological materials has provided mixed results. The experimental difficulties associated with the application of this technique to the study of biological materials include the effects of ultra-high vacuum, x-ray exposure, surface charging, and, for insulating materials, the inherent lack of an intrinsic energy reference. Since most biological materials are insulators, the lack of an intrinsic energy reference complicates one's ability to draw direct comparisons between different studies. In this paper, the results from two differen

Extending Multi-Input Linear Correction to Energy Representation Theory: Accurate Solvation Free Energy Prediction Independent of Volume Information.

We extend the multi-input linear correction (MILC) framework to the energy representation (ER) theory to improve the accuracy and robustness of solvation free energy (SFE) predictions. While ER theory offers a computationally efficient route to SFE from solute-solvent pair interaction distributions, its standard functionals often suffer from systematic biases. Although the truncated hypernetted chain (tHNC) functional was developed to reduce these errors, it relies on an empirical truncation parameter that is temperature-dependent and difficult to define for mixed solvents. To overcome these l

Quantitative analysis of robustness-based versus LET-based optimization in intensity-modulated proton therapy for pediatric brain tumors.

PURPOSE: To perform a quantitative analysis of the trade-off between robustness-based and linear energy transfer (LET)-based optimization of intensity-modulated proton therapy for anatomically challenging pediatric brain tumor cases. METHODS: Three pediatric brain tumor patients were included in this study. Three plans were generated for each case based on: (1) nominal optimization, without considering uncertainties and LET; (2) robust optimization, including proton range and patient setup uncertainties; and (3) LET optimization, considering increasing LET in the target and reducing LET in no

The Appropriate Conditions for the Cell Sparing (FLASH) Effect Exist in Ultra-high Dose Rate Carbon Ion Irradiation.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Ultra-high dose rate irradiation (uHDR) (>40 Gy/s), commonly referred to as FLASH, has garnered attention in radiation therapy research due to its potential to mitigate damage to normal tissues while maintaining tumoricidal effects. Research on FLASH therapy using electron beams, X-rays, and proton beams has preceded studies using carbon ion beams. However, the clinical potential of FLASH carbon ion irradiation is increasingly being recognized, similar to other radiation modalities. This study aimed to evaluate the cell-sparing effect of carbon ion beams under normoxic conditio

Dose-averaged LET escalation with multi-ion therapy for head and neck cancers: a phase I study protocol for a prospective, open-label, single-arm, single-centre trial (MULTI-ION-HN-I).

INTRODUCTION: The standard treatment for unresectable head and neck cancer typically involves radiotherapy (RT) alone or chemoradiotherapy (chemo-RT). Non-squamous cell carcinomas exhibit relatively low radiosensitivity, limiting the efficacy of conventional photon RT. Carbon-ion (C-ion) RT, characterised by high linear energy transfer (LET) and high relative biological effectiveness (RBE), has shown promising outcomes in treating radioresistant head and neck cancers. However, local recurrences still occur, and further improvements in treatment outcomes are needed. To enhance the local control

Chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes exposed to a mixed beam of low energy neutrons and gamma radiation.

Cells exposed to thermal neutrons are simultaneously damaged by radiations with high and low linear energy transfer (LET). A question relevant for the assessment of risk of exposure to a mixed beam is whether the biological effect of both radiation types is additive or synergistic. The aim of the present investigation was to calculate whether the high and low LET components of a thermal neutron field interact when damaging cells. Human peripheral blood lymphocytes were exposed to neutrons from the HB11 beam at the Institute for Energy and Transport, Petten, Netherlands, in a 37 °C water phanto

Physical mechanisms of phonation onset: a linear stability analysis of an aeroelastic continuum model of phonation.

In an investigation of phonation onset, a linear stability analysis was performed on a two-dimensional, aeroelastic, continuum model of phonation. The model consisted of a vocal fold-shaped constriction situated in a rigid pipe coupled to a potential flow which separated at the superior edge of the vocal fold. The vocal fold constriction was modeled as a plane-strain linear elastic layer. The dominant eigenvalues and eigenmodes of the fluid-structure-interaction system were investigated as a function of glottal airflow. To investigate specific aerodynamic mechanisms of phonation onset, individ

Theoretical and experimental tests of a chromosomal fingerprint for densely ionizing radiation based on F ratios calculated from stable and unstable chromosome aberrations.

In the present study, F ratios for both stable chromosome aberrations, i.e. ratios of translocations to pericentric inversions, and unstable aberrations, i.e. dicentrics and centric rings, were measured using fluorescence in situ hybridization. F ratios for stable aberrations measured after exposure to low (2.89 Gy 60Co gamma rays) and high-LET (0.25 Gy 56Fe ions; 1.25 Gy 56Fe ions; 3.0 Gy 12C ions) radiation were 6.5 +/- 1.5, 4.7 +/- 1.6, 9.3 +/- 2.5 and 10.4 +/- 3.0, respectively. F ratios for unstable aberrations measured after low (2.89 Gy 60Co gamma rays) and high-LET (0.25 Gy 56Fe ions;

Particle-induced chromosome aberrations and mutations: an overview.

Energy depositions by sparsely and densely ionizing radiation in the cellular DNA are responsible for deleterious radiobiological effects like the induction of chromosome aberrations or gene mutations. However, due to differences in the spatial pattern of energy deposition the action of densely ionizing radiation is quantitatively and qualitatively different from that of sparsely ionizing radiation. By the use of new molecular-biological techniques a deeper insight into the molecular events underlaying particle-induced genetic changes has been obtained. The present paper will attempt to give a

Development of a Resting Energy Expenditure Estimation in Patients Undergoing Targeted Temperature Management with a Surface Gel Pad Temperature Modulating Device.

Targeted temperature management (TTM) directly impacts energy expenditure via temperature modulation and shivering associated with temperature modulating devices. We hypothesized that resting energy expenditure (REE) can be accurately estimated utilizing data obtained from a surface gel pad temperature modulating device (TMD) and demographic factors. Baseline demographic data, along with concurrent temperature, sedation, and shivering data, and indirect calorimetry (IDC) were collected from patients undergoing TTM. The data from the IDC and temperature modulation device (TMD) were synchronized

Structure-dependent nanobubble dynamics in multi-nanoparticle systems.

HYPOTHESIS: The spatial distribution of nanoparticles is hypothesized to be a critical, tunable parameter governing nanobubble dynamics and interfacial heat transfer. We propose that multi-nanoparticle systems, unlike isolated particles that were the focus of prior studies, can leverage collective effects to lower the energy barrier for nucleation, modulate nanobubble growth, and delay structural failure, thereby offering a pathway to optimize thermal processes in nanomedicine and nanoscale energy transfer. SIMULATION METHOD: Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate this hy

Low-dose radiation exposure and carcinogenesis.

Absorption of energy from ionizing radiation by the genetic material in the cell leads to damage to DNA, which in turn leads to cell death, chromosome aberrations and gene mutations. While early or deterministic effects result from organ and tissue damage caused by cell killing, latter two are considered to be involved in the initial events that lead to the development of cancer. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated the dose-response relationships for cancer induction and quantitative evaluations of cancer risk following exposure to moderate to high doses of low-linear energy transfer rad

Molecular factors influencing drug transfer across the blood-brain barrier.

A recently reported approach to the prediction of blood-brain drug distribution uses the general linear free energy equation to correlate equilibrium blood-brain solute distributions (logBB) with five solute descriptors: R2 an excess molar refraction term; pi2H, solute dipolarity or polarizability; alpha2H and beta2H, the hydrogen bond acidity or basicity, and Vx, the solute McGowan volume. In this study we examine whether the model can be used to analyse kinetic transfer rates across the blood-brain barrier in the rat. The permeability (logPS) of the blood-brain barrier to a chemically divers

Signal-on electrochemiluminescence biosensor for hepatitis B virus DNA based on energy transfer between gold nanoclusters and magnetically Fe3O4@Ru@SiO2 probe.

Based on the well matching between the emission of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) and the absorption of ruthenium complex-doped magnetic silica nanoparticles (Fe3O4@Ru(bpy)32+@SiO2, simply as Fe3O4@Ru@SiO2), these two nanoparticles were employed as the energy donor and acceptor, respectively, to develop a signal-on electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ECL-RET) biosensor for the sensitive and selective detection of hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA (chosen as a model target). Two DNAs (H1 and H2) capable of hybridizing with the target DNA were designed and modified on the nanoparticles to f

DFT-Based Permutationally Invariant Polynomial Potentials Capture the Twists and Turns of C14H30.

Hydrocarbons are ubiquitous as fuels, solvents, lubricants, and as the principal components of plastics and fibers, yet our ability to predict their dynamical properties is limited to force-field mechanics. Here, we report two machine-learned potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the linear 44-atom hydrocarbon C14H30 using an extensive data set of roughly 250,000 density functional theory (DFT) (B3LYP) energies for a large variety of configurations, obtained using MM3 direct-dynamics calculations at 500, 1000, and 2500 K. Excitation Energy Transfer Supported Amplified Charge-Transfer Emission in an Anthracenedicarboxylate- and Bipyridophenazine-Based Coordination Complex.

A highly luminescent tetrameric zinc(II) complex, {[Zn4(adc)3(bpz)6(HCOO)2]·2H2O} (1; adc = 9,10-anthracenedicarboxylate and bpz = bipyridophenazine), was synthesized by a solvothermal technique and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The linear tetrameric units extend into three dimensions via π stacking of adc/bpz and bpz/bpz and multiple CH-π interactions. The compound shows strong red emission at 597 nm (λex = 480 nm), which is attributed to charge-transfer (CT) emission within an adc/bpz donor-acceptor pair. This is also supported by density functional theory computations.
