Integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analysis reveals the role of root phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathway in the salt tolerance of perennial ryegrass.

Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) is a widely cultivated forage and turf grass species. Salt stress can severely damage the growth of grass plants. The genome-wide molecular mechanisms of salt tolerance have not been well understood in perennial grass species. In this study, the salt sensitive genotype P1 (PI265351, Chile) and the salt tolerant genotype P2 (PI368892, Algeria) of perennial ryegrass were subjected to 200 mM NaCl, and transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses were performed. A total of 5,728 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified through pairwise comparisons. Ant

Treatment with potassium bromide mitigates ataxia and reduces tremor in lambs with perennial ryegrass toxicosis.

Aims: To assess the use of potassium bromide (KBr) as a therapeutic intervention for perennial ryegrass toxicosis (PRGT) in lambs fed ryegrass seed containing lolitrem B. Methods: Male lambs aged 10-12 months (n = 43) were assigned to receive ryegrass seed containing lolitrem B, at a dose of 0.16 mg/kg/day (Groups 2, 3 and 4), or lucerne chaff and molasses (Groups 1 and 5). Lambs in Groups 2 and 3 were observed for clinical signs and gait changes until defined signs of PGRT were observed, when they were transferred, with lambs in Group 1, to the Testing phase of the trial. Lambs in Group 3 wer

Forage type influences milk yield and ruminal responses to wheat adaptation in late-lactation dairy cows.

The effects of different wheat adaptation strategies on ruminal fluid pH, dry matter intake (DMI) and energy-corrected milk (ECM) were measured in 28 late-lactation dairy cows. Cows were fed either perennial ryegrass (PRG) hay or alfalfa hay and had no previous wheat adaptation. Wheat was gradually substituted for forage in 3 even increments, over 6 or 11 d, until wheat made up 40% of DMI (∼8 kg of dry matter/cow per day). We found no differences in DMI between adaptation strategies (6 or 11 d) within forage type; however, cows fed alfalfa hay consumed more overall and produced more ECM. The r

Acute-onset high-morbidity primary photosensitisation in sheep associated with consumption of the Casbah and Mauro cultivars of the pasture legume Biserrula.

BACKGROUND: Primary photosensitisation (PS) subsequent to ingestion of the pasture legume Biserrula pelecinus L. (biserrula) has recently been confirmed in grazing livestock. Given the potential utility of this pasture species in challenging climates, a grazing trial was undertaken to examine if both varieties 'Casbah' and 'Mauro' were able to cause photosensitisation in livestock, and if this could be mitigated by grazing in winter, or in combination with other common pasture species. RESULTS: A controlled grazing trial was undertaken in winter in Australia with plots containing a dominant p

Evaluation of physical structure value in spring-harvested grass/clover silage and hay fed to heifers.

The physical structure value of conserved grass/clover forages of spring harvest was evaluated by assessing effects of harvest time, conservation method, iNDF/NDF ratio and NDF intake (NDFI) per kg BW on chewing activity and fecal particle size in dairy heifers. A mixed sward consisting of ryegrass (Lolium perenne), red clover (Trifolium pratense) and white clover (Trifolium repens) was harvested in 2009 on May 9 (early) and 25 (late), and both cuts were conserved as silage and hay. The early silage, early hay, late silage and late hay contained dry matter (DM) of 454, 842, 250 and 828 g/kg, a

Biochemical and Physiological Responses of Weeds to the Application of a Botanical Herbicide Based on Cinnamon Essential Oil.

The use of chemical herbicides induces negative impacts on the environment, animals, and human health. It also leads to the development of herbicide-resistant weeds. In this context, natural and efficacious herbicides are highly sought after. Essential oils are natural compounds with antibacterial, fungicidal, and phytotoxic properties. For this reason, we studied the post-emergence phytotoxic effect of cinnamon essential oil (cinnamon EO) from Cinnamomum cassia under greenhouse conditions, testing it against Trifolium incarnatum (T. incarnatum) and Lolium perenne (L. perenne). The content of

New Efficient Eco-Friendly Supported Catalysts for the Synthesis of Amides with Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Properties.

A new environmentally friendly approach for the synthesis of idrocilamide (1), a marketed myorelaxant and anti-inflammatory agent, is reported herein. The synthetic strategy involves a solvent-free aminolysis reaction catalyzed by zinc-containing species (ZnCl2 , montmorillonite K10 (MK10) impregnated with ZnCl2 or eco-catalysts). The latter have been prepared from the aerial parts of Lolium perenne L. plants grown on contaminated soils from northern France without and with thermal activation at 120 °C and supported on MK10 (Ecocat1 and Ecocat2, respectively). The best aminolysis catalysts in

Biogeographic differences in soil biota promote invasive grass response to nutrient addition relative to co-occurring species despite lack of belowground enemy release.

Multiple plant species invasions and increases in nutrient availability are pervasive drivers of global environmental change that often co-occur. Many plant invasion studies, however, focus on single-species or single-mechanism invasions, risking an oversimplification of a multifaceted process. Here, we test how biogeographic differences in soil biota, such as belowground enemy release, interact with increases in nutrient availability to influence invasive plant growth. We conducted a greenhouse experiment using three co-occurring invasive grasses and one native grass. We grew species in live

Ovine white-liver disease (OWLD). Botanical and chemical composition of pasture grass.

The most important grass species on the ovine white-liver disease (OWLD) pastures (S) were Poa spp., Agropyron repens and Lolium perenne, while the control pastures (H), where lambs grew well, consisted of Poa spp., Festuca rubra and Agrostis tenuis. The soil was more acidic on the H pastures as compared with the S pastures. OWLD grass (S grass) contained marginal to deficient amounts of cobalt during the first 2 months of grazing. During 2 years out of 3, the average Co content was slightly lower in the S grass as compared with the content in the H grass. The lowest average grass Co was, howe

Motility of the reticulum and rumen of sheep given juice-extracted pasture.

1. Sheep were fed on different diets of juice-extracted herbage to determine what effect juice-extraction had on reticulo-rumen motility. 2. The frequency of A and B sequences of contraction of the reticulo-rumen were recorded during eating, rumination and inactivity for continuous periods of 24-72 h by using integrated electromyograms obtained from electrodes implanted in the musculature of the reticulum and cranial dorsal rumen. 3. Animals were fed on herbage in which approximately 200 g/kg drug matter had been removed in juice extracted from ryegrass (Lolium perenne), white clover (Trifoliu

Removal of chemical oxygen demand and dissolved nutrients by a sunken lawn infiltration system during intermittent storm events.

Urban surface water runoff typically contains high but varying amounts of organic matter and nutrients that require removal before reuse. Infiltration systems such as sunken lawns can improve water quality. However, there is currently insufficient information describing the treatment efficiency of lawn-based infiltration systems. In this study, novel sunken lawn infiltration systems (SLISs) were designed and their pollutant removal effectiveness was assessed. The results revealed that SLISs with Poa pratensis and Lolium perenne effectively removed most chemical oxygen demand (CODCr) and dissol

CRITICAL LEAF CONCENTRATIONS FOR DEFICIENCIES OF NITROGEN, POTASSIUM, PHOSPHORUS, SULPHUR, AND MAGNESIUM IN PERENNIAL RYEGRASS.

Critical leaf concentrations for deficiency of nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, sulphur, and magnesium were estimated for perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) grown in sand culture. The values associated with a 10% reduction in dry matter yield were as follows (all results expressed as g kg-1 DM except for the nitrate-nitrogen value which appears as μg-1 DM): Kjeldahl-nitrogen 32; nitrate-nitrogen 500; potassium 28; phosphorus 2.1; sulphur 1.8; and magnesium 0.7. A major difference between the critical leaf concentrations estimated in this study and the tentative values published elsewhere w

Assessing the suitability of alternative organic matter materials for peat replacement in standard artificial soil formulations.

Artificial soil has been used in regulatory ecotoxicology and in general chemical toxicity testing with soil organisms since 1984. Formulated standard artificial soil (SAS), consisting of 10% finely ground Sphagnum sp. peat, 20% kaolinite clay, 69% quartz sand, and 1% CaCO3, is often used for assessing the toxicity of chemicals to various terrestrial organisms, including earthworms, enchytraeids, collembola, and terrestrial plants. Recently, however, the use of peat in the SAS formulation has become less advisable due to peatland degradation. Therefore, toxicity studies have been conducted wit

The inhibitory potential of green manure return on the germination and seedling growth of Eleusine indica L.

Trifolium repens L. (white clover) and Lolium perenne L. (ryegrass) are green manures widely used in conservation tillage systems worldwide. Eleusine indica L. (goosegrass) is a globally recognized noxious weed. Herein, we investigated the effects of aqueous extracts, decomposed liquids, and different straw-to-soil ratios on the germination and growth of goosegrass. The results showed that high concentrations (≥ 30%) of aqueous extracts or decomposed liquids of both green manures significantly inhibited germination-related parameters of goosegrass. The strongest inhibitory effect was observed

Development of a female attractant for the click beetle pest Agriotes brevis.

BACKGROUND: Traps suitable for catching female Agriotes click beetles may provide better reconnaissance than pheromone-baited traps which catch only males, thereby contributing to more efficient crop protection. The basis for this study came from (i) observations of female Agriotes brevis (Candeze) aggregating beneath foliage of Medicago sativa (L.) and Lolium italicum (A. Br.) placed on plastic sheets on bare soil, and (ii) field tests demonstrating attraction of females to traps baited with foliage from these plants. The aim was to identify and field test volatile compounds from M. sativa an

Influence of level of concentrate allocation and fermentability of forage fiber on chewing behavior and production of dairy cows.

Nine midlactation dairy cows were offered one of three mixed silage rations with neutral detergent fiber (NDF) that was similar in concentration but different in fermentability. Differences in fermentability were achieved by substituting a high quality alfalfa silage for a low quality alfalfa silage and substituting a combination of ryegrass and timothy silages for a barley silage. In addition, concentrate was allocated at 0.30, 0.82, or 1.37 kg of dry matter/kg of dry matter intake (DMI) from the mixed silage ration. As expected, the NDF content of the mixed silage ration did not differ, alth
