METHODS: Data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe were used to analyze 4,109 adults aged 65+ who experienced the onset of mobility limitations, of whom 2,018 recovered within 2 years. A reference group of 8,197 individuals had no mobility limitatio

Loneliness in Parkinson's disease: Subjective experience overshadows objective motor impairment.

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness is linked to poor life quality and health, but its relevance in Parkinson's disease (PD) is incompletely understood. The current study aimed to understand rates of loneliness and its determinants in PD. METHODS: Consecutive cross-sectional sampling resulted in 178 PD subjects (60 % men) across disease stages (86 % early-stage) with gold-standard diagnoses. Family member incarceration and loneliness among low-income U.S. veterans.

Exposure to incarceration can have significant ramifications for one's social relationships. However, the study of how the incarceration of a family member influences loneliness, including among specific segments of the population that experience elevated levels of loneliness, such as U.S. military veterans, has gone understudied. This study aimed to examine the relationship between family member incarceration and perceptions of loneliness among a sample of low-income U.S. military veterans. Data are from the National Veteran Homeless and Other Poverty Experiences Study-a national survey of lo

Australian homeless persons' experiences of social connectedness, isolation and loneliness.

Both loneliness and a lack of social integration are associated with serious physical and psychological health issues. One population highly susceptible to social isolation and loneliness are individuals who are homeless, who also experience high rates of mental disorder and relationship breakdown. Despite this, little research has explored how social networks, isolation and loneliness are experienced for those with a history of homelessness. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were used to get a nuanced understanding of how social networks and isolation are experienced and understood by indi

Portraits of loneliness: emerging themes among community-dwelling older adults.

With aging comes a multitude of possible losses, including loss of health, spouse, friends, or independence. These losses can place older adults at risk for isolation and loneliness. Loneliness is of significant concern in older adults, as it can negatively affect their quality of life. An interpretive phenomenological study was conducted to explore the meaning of loneliness in 12 older adults living in the community. Selected excerpts from the participants reveal several themes, as well as the importance of maintaining meaningful connections and relationships with others to alleviate feelings

Predictors of loneliness in U.S. adults over age sixty-five.

The purpose of this study was to examine sociodemographic and health-related risks for loneliness among older adults using Health and Retirement Study Data. Overall prevalence of loneliness was 19.3%. Marital status, self-report of health, number of chronic illnesses, gross motor impairment, fine motor impairment, and living alone were predictors of loneliness. Age, female gender, use of home care, and frequency of healthcare visits were not predictive. Loneliness is a prevalent problem for older adults in the United States with its own health-related risks. Future research of interventions ta

Exploring community connections: neighborhood amenities and loneliness among Chinese immigrants.

OBJECTIVE: Very little work has investigated built environment effects on loneliness. This study examined the relationship between neighborhood amenities and changes in loneliness among immigrants. METHODS: Person-level cohort data were obtained from first-generation Chinese immigrants (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; baseline October 2018 – January 2020 and follow-up 3 years later, N = 346). Loneliness was assessed using the 3-item UCLA Loneliness Scale. Amenity locations for grocery shopping, health care, places of worship, and leisure activity were crowd-sourced from the cohort. Loneliness around the world: patterns, predictors, and well-being implications.

Loneliness is increasingly recognized as a global public health concern, yet cross-national evidence remains limited. Using data from the 2023-2024 Gallup World Poll, this study provides a globally representative description of loneliness across 148 countries (N = 218,048). Over one in five adults reported feeling lonely, with prevalence highest in low-income countries and Sub-Saharan Africa. Multivariate analyses identified several predictors of lower loneliness, such as better health, higher education, larger household size, and employment, though their associations varied by context. Transportation barriers, loneliness, and depressive/anxiety symptoms in older adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Transportation is crucial to maintaining social engagement in later life. Lack of transportation is significantly associated with depressive/anxiety symptoms in older adults. In this study, we examined the extent to which loneliness mediates the relationship between transportation barriers and depressive/anxiety symptoms. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Using the 2023 National Health and Aging Trends Study (N = 7,547; age 65+), we defined transportation barriers as transportation problems that kept older adults from visiting family/friends, attending religious services

Loneliness and suicide mitigation for students using GPT3-enabled chatbots.

Mental health is a crisis for learners globally, and digital support is increasingly seen as a critical resource. Concurrently, Intelligent Social Agents receive exponentially more engagement than other conversational systems, but their use in digital therapy provision is nascent. A survey of 1006 student users of the Intelligent Social Agent, Replika, investigated participants' loneliness, perceived social support, use patterns, and beliefs about Replika. We found participants were more lonely than typical student populations but still perceived high social support. Many used Replika in multi

Adolescents' Experiences of Existential Loneliness Regarding Receiving and Providing Support.

Among adolescents, loneliness is common. One kind of loneliness, existential loneliness, is understood as a painful part of the human condition. During adolescence, existential loneliness has been shown to be challenging to navigate independently. Therefore, this study aimed to explore Swedish adolescents' experiences of existential loneliness regarding receiving and providing support. This study had an exploratory qualitative design based on focus group discussions (n = 9) comprising 30 Swedish adolescents (median age 18). The data was analysed inductively using thematic analysis. The adolesc

Perceptions of social rigidity predict loneliness across the Japanese population.

Loneliness is associated with mental and physical health problems and elevated suicide risk, and is increasingly widespread in modern societies. However, identifying the primary factors underlying loneliness remains a major public health challenge. Historically, loneliness was thought to result from a lack of high-quality social connections, but broader cultural factors (e.g. social norms) are increasingly recognized to also influence loneliness. Here, we used a large-scale survey (N = 4977) to assess to what degree the loneliness epidemic in Japan is associated with traditional measures of so

Young Adults' Experience of Loneliness in London's Most Deprived Areas.

Young adults (16-24 years old) are currently the loneliest group in Western countries. In particular, young adults of lower socio-economic status (SES) living in the most deprived areas are loneliest in the United Kingdom. This mixed-methods study explored the experience of loneliness among this under-explored demographic in London. Using a novel free association technique, the experience of loneliness was found to be characterized by: a sense of isolation, negative emotions and thoughts, coping and a positive orientation to aloneness. An exploration of these themes revealed that: one can feel
