There has been a recent surge of interest in the development of animal models of hyperacusis, a condition in which tolerance to sounds of moderate and high intensities is diminished. The reasons for this decreased tolerance are likely multifactorial, but some major factors that contribute to hyperacusis are increased loudness perception and heightened sensitivity and/or responsiveness to sound. Increased sound sensitivity is a symptom that sometimes develops in human subjects after acoustic insult and has recently been demonstrated in animals as evidenced by enhancement of the acoustic startle

The estimation of the maximum comfort loudness levels (MCL) by measurements of the electrically elicited stapedius reflex was examined in six experienced cochlear implant users supplied with the COMBI 40 implant system. The stapedius reflex was tested and loudness scaling was performed simultaneously using an up/down stimulation protocol close to the reflex threshold with automated recording of both test procedures. The electrical stapedius reflex threshold (ESRT) and loudness scaling were evaluated separately. Scaling at the reflex threshold ranged between normal and loud. The range of stimul

Nine hearing-impaired subjects with primarily high-frequency hearing loss (Group A) and 8 hearing-impaired subjects with hearing loss in both the high- and low-frequency regions (Group B) participated in the experiment. Subjects wore binaural programmable multimemory hearing aids and selected the preferred amount of insertion gain while they listened to discourse passages read by a male speaker (listen). Subjects also selected the preferred amount of gain while they listened to themselves as they were reading the same passages (read-aloud). Subjects' word-recognition performances and their sub

Three experiments examined the disruption of perceptual motor performance by intense noise bursts. Subjects aimed a rifle at a fixed target for 15-s periods separated by 15 s of rest. This cycle was repeated 30 times in each of two series separated by a 15-min rest, each series containing five noise bursts. The noise bursts disrupted aiming for 1-2 s, an effect that increased with sound pressure level for 110, 120, and 130 dB stimuli. There was no difference between stimuli with energy centered on 250 Hz as opposed to 800 Hz. The effect diminished over the five bursts within the first series (

Sound is a sensory stimulant ubiquitously found throughout our environment. Humans have evolved a system that effectively and automatically converts sound sensory inputs into emotions. Although different emotional responses to sounds with different frequency characteristics are empirically recognized, there is a paucity of studies addressing different emotional responses to these sounds and the underlying neural mechanisms. In this study, we examined effects of pure tone (PT) and white noise (WN) inputs at ordinary loudness levels on emotional responses. We found that WN stimuli produced more

Previous music interventions for epilepsy have reportedly associated favorable patient outcomes with exposure to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major (K. 448). Other songs have reportedly replicated this phenomenon, raising the possibility that music reportedly associated with favorable outcomes might contain similar properties. This exploratory study investigated this possibility, which could inform a conceptual foundation for prospective works and future hypotheses. Music was assigned to Group A (literature-reported favorable intervention outcomes) or Group B (literature-reported as not

Background: Tinnitus-the perception of sound despite the absence of an external source-can be a debilitating condition for which there are currently no pharmacological remedies. Our proof of concept study focused on the immediate effects of non-invasive electrical stimulation through the ear canal on loudness and tinnitus-induced distress. In addition, we aimed to identify variables that may affect the simulation outcomes. Methods: Sixty-six patients (29 women and 37 men, mean age 54.4 ± 10.4) with chronic tinnitus were recruited to the tertiary referral hospital between December 2019 and Dece

PURPOSE: This study aimed to further investigate the accompanying effect in speech motor control by examining how pitch, loudness, and formants (first formant [F1]) coadjust at the trial level when auditory feedback is simultaneously perturbed in any two of three acoustic dimensions. Additionally, the study also assessed whether shift direction predictability modulates these cross-dimensional responses.
METHOD: Forty-six native Mandarin speakers produced the sustained vowel /ɛ/ for 3 s while auditory feedback was shifted either unpredictably or predictably in single-shift conditions (pitch on

The sources of human exposure to low-frequency noise and its effects are reviewed. Low-frequency noise is common as background noise in urban environments, and as an emission from many artificial sources: road vehicles, aircraft, industrial machinery, artillery and mining explosions, and air movement machinery including wind turbines, compressors, and ventilation or air-conditioning units. The effects of low-frequency noise are of particular concern because of its pervasiveness due to numerous sources, efficient propagation, and reduced efficacy of many structures (dwellings, walls, and hearin

Peak pressure has been one of the key parameters of impulse noise used to assess the hazard to hearing. It is used in most international noise exposure limits. France uses an A-weighted energy limit. There is a rough correspondence between peak pressure and the hazard to hearing for a given type of impulse noise. However, when the effects of different types of impulses are compared, this correspondence breaks down. One of the alternate measures of impulse intensity is weighted energy. Weighted energy is appealing for a number of reasons. It does not depend on details of the pressure-time histo

Although it is well known that patients with mild head injury (MHI) are less able to endure intense light and sound stimuli than normal people, there are few psychophysical studies that have objectively measured this type of hyperaesthesia. In the present study, using a computerised rating scale technique, both the maximal and submaximal levels of reduced tolerance to light and sound were assessed for a wide range of stimuli. Three to six days after the trauma, 40 MHI patients were significantly less tolerant to stimuli of intensities over 71 dB and 500 lux levels than controls. These intensit

Distortion products ( DPs ) evoked by two-tone stimuli at frequencies F1 and F2 were measured in the ear-canal sound pressure of the alligator lizard. The largest sound pressures measured, other than those at F1 and F2, where at the cubic difference frequencies 2F1-F2 and 2F2-F1. All cubic DPs were greatly reduced by destruction of the basilar membrane, which suggests that its nonlinear properties are the source of the DPs . Measurements following acoustic overstimulation show a complex relationship between the magnitude of DPs and cochlear state, as assessed by measurements of cochlear potent

BACKGROUND: Brief acoustic tinnitus suppression following sound stimulation is being studied to better understand the mechanisms underlying tinnitus and short-term suppression of the tinnitus perception. In this context, several kinds of filtered or modulated stimuli have been investigated. However, little research was conducted regarding the effect of stimulation length for brief acoustic tinnitus suppression.
METHODS: The aim of the present study was to compare the extent of tinnitus suppression after a 20-minute and a 3-minute acoustic stimulation with an individual best stimulus. Three ex

PURPOSE: Tinnitus is defined as the perception of sounds in the absence of extrinsic sound stimuli. Sound therapy is an option for tinnitus rehabilitation, which aims to mitigate the functional and emotional effects of tinnitus. Several studies have reported that a longer duration of sound therapy may result in a greater tinnitus relief effect. However, the relationship between the daily hours of sound therapy and the tinnitus relief effect remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the tinnitus relief effect according to the time spent in daily performing sound therapy.
METHOD: Fifty-eight

Direct drive hearing devices, which deliver a signal directly to the middle ear by vibrating the tympanic membrane via a lens placed in contact with the umbo, are designed to provide an extension of audible bandwidth, but there are few studies of the effects of these devices on preference, speech intelligibility, and loudness. The current study is the first to compare aided speech understanding between narrow and extended bandwidth conditions for listeners with hearing loss while fitted with a direct drive hearing aid system. The study also explored the effect of bandwidth on loudness percepti

Introduction: Tinnitus is the phantom auditory perception of sound in the absence of an external or internal acoustic stimulus. The treatment is difficult due to multiple etiologies and great psychological influence. The purpose of this study was to determine alterations in auditory physiological and electrophysiological responses associated with temporary suppression of tinnitus induced by low-level laser (LLL) irradiation. Methods: This study was conducted on 20 subjects with subjective tinnitus. All subjects signed the informed consent form and satisfied all the study eligibility criteria.

Tinnitus is a phantom sound perception in the ears or head and can arise from many different medical disorders. Currently, there is no standard treatment for tinnitus that reliably reduces tinnitus. Individual patients reported that acupressure at various points around the ear can help to reduce tinnitus, which was investigated here. With this longitudinal observational study, we report a systematic evaluation of auricular acupressure on 39 tinnitus sufferers, combined with a self-help smartphone app. The participants were asked to report on tinnitus, stress, mood, neck, and jaw muscle tension

Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the absence of an external acoustic source, which often exerts a significant impact on the quality of life. Currently there is evidence that neuroplastic changes in both neural pathways are involved in the generation and maintaining of tinnitus. Neuromodulation has been suggested to interfere with these neuroplastic alterations. In this study we aimed to compare the effect of two upcoming forms of transcranial electrical neuromodulation: alternating current stimulation (tACS) and random noise stimulation (tRNS), both applied on the auditory cortex. A da
