Solitary plasmacytoma of the chest wall. A case report.

Solitary plasmacytic lymphomas are rarely described in the lung. Generally, localized neoplasms develop into mediastinal or pulmonary lymphnodes and are hard to differentiate from other lung neoplasms. An involvement of the chest wall in multiple myeloma is not rare, and is generally associated with other skeletal localizations. A secreting solitary plasmacytoma of the ribs is rather uncommon: a personal review of the literature has showed, in the last ten years, only two cases of these tumors, secreting IgG lambda light chains. In this study we report a case of solitary plasmacytoma of the ch

Ectopic thymoma of the lung; a rare case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Ectopic thymoma is a rare neoplasm, which can be developed in various sites, with the lung being amongst the rarest. CASE PRESENTATION: In this paper, we present the case of a woman with a slow-growing ectopic thymoma, stemming from the visceral pleura of the upper lobe of the left lung anteriorly, extending into the left lung and the cardiac wall, invading the fatty tissue near the pericardium, notably without infiltrating the lung or cardiac parenchyma. The thymoma was successfully removed via thoracotomy. CONCLUSION: Ectopic thymoma is an uncommon neoplasm. To our knowledge,

The effect of N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine after oral administration to hamsters.

Oral administration of N-nitrosobis(2-oxopropyl)amine (BOP) in drinking water to Syrian golden hamsters for 90 days resulted in a high incidence of intra- and extrahepatic bile duct neoplasms. Only a few pancreatic neoplasms and no lung and kidney tumors developed, in contrast to results obtained after subcutaneous BOP administration.

An unusual case of peripartum pulmonary oedema.

A previously healthy woman in her early 20s presented in week 38 of pregnancy with a 2-week history of haemoptysis, positional dyspnoea and an examination suggestive of pulmonary oedema. A chest CT showed a left lower lobe lung mass invading through the inferior pulmonary vein into the left atrium and abutting the posterior mitral leaflet. Pulmonary oedema consequent on left inferior pulmonary vein occlusion was initially restricted to the left lower lobe, but progressed to involve the contralateral lung following extension of the mass to the mitral orifice, resulting in functional mitral sten

Anterior mediastinoscopy for evaluation of mediastinal metastases of cancer of the left lung.

In 20 of 62 patients (32%) with presumably operable cancer of the left lung, metastatic cancer in the anterior mediastinal lymph node was detected by left anterior mediastinoscopy without division or spreading of costal cartilage. Fourteen of 41 patients (33%) with left upper lobe and four of 19 (21%) with left lower lobe cancer had positive anterior mediastinal node biopsies. In a comparable group having cervical mediastinoscopy for cancer of the right lung, 39 of 103 (38%) had positive paratracheal or subcarinal lymph nodes. In both mediastinoscopy groups six of 45 squamous carcinomas (13%),

Preoperative imaging for metastasectomy.

For most solid neoplasms, medical imaging is a vital component of tumor staging and surveillance. Imaging strategies vary according to the type and grade of primary neoplasm, tumor stage at diagnosis, tumor markers, previous therapies, and patient symptoms. In this article, we address imaging of individual organs (lung, liver, adrenals) and outline imaging strategies for specific types of neoplasms.

p16 Deletion in sarcomatoid tumors of the lung and pleura.

CONTEXT: The diagnosis of sarcomatoid neoplasms of the lung and pleura can be challenging. Homozygous deletion of 9p21, the locus harboring the p16 gene, has been reported as the most common genetic alteration in malignant mesotheliomas that is of potential diagnostic and prognostic significance. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of 9p21 deletion by fluorescence in situ hybridization in the primary sarcomatoid neoplasms of the lung and pleura and to determine its potential diagnostic utility. DESIGN: Ninety-two sarcomatoid neoplasms of the lung and pleura (32 sarcomatoid mesotheliomas, 1

Primary pleuropulmonary synovial sarcoma with brain metastases in a paediatric patient: an unusual presentation.

Primary lung neoplasms are rare in children. The most common primary lung malignancies in children are pleuropulmonary blastoma and carcinoid tumour. Synovial sarcoma (SS) accounts for approximately 1% of all childhood malignancies. In absolute terms, the SS of the lungs and pleura are extremely rare and pose a diagnostic difficulty. Soft tissue sarcomas usually have a high potential for metastases, however, metastasis to the brain is rare, even in widely disseminated disease, and it has been described only in 3 case reports previously. Primary pleuropulmonary SS with brain metastases is even

[Mimics of lung cancer].

Lung cancer is a histologically, immunologically and therefore morphologically and functionally very heterogeneous group of neoplasms with the highest cancer mortality worldwide. Therefore, the range of diseases mimicking lung cancer is also very broad and includes congenital, infectious and inflammatory changes as well as other benign space-occupying lesions and other primary and secondary pulmonary neoplasms. The difficulty in radiology lies in the ability to diagnose lung cancer with a high degree of certainty. This must take the limits of the specific diagnosis, knowledge of the classical

Primary pulmonary lymphoproliferative neoplasms.

Pulmonary lymphoproliferative neoplasms are rare lung tumors and account for <1% of all lung tumors. Among them, primary pulmonary lymphomas (PPL) constitute the majority, which include Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) that comprise of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma, diffuse large B-cell lymphomas and other rare types of NHL and lymphomatoid granulomatosis. HL, which arises secondary to contiguous spread from the mediastinum, is the rarest type of PPL. Other entities described within the umbrella of pulmonary lymphoproliferative neoplasms include pleural lymphomas and posttransplant ly

SMARCB1/INI1-deficient intrathoracic neoplasm with rhabdoid/plasmacytoid cytomorphology in a patient with plasma cell myeloma: A case report.

SMARCB1 (INI1) is one of the switch/sucrose nonfermentable (SWI/SNF) complexes whose loss is associated with several tumors. SMARCB1 (INI1)-deficient intrathoracic neoplasms are extremely rare and known to be highly malignant and lethal. This report presents the case of a patient diagnosed with SMARCB1 (INI1)-deficient intrathoracic neoplasm during chemotherapy for plasma cell myeloma. A 77-year-old male patient complained of cough, bloody sputum, and fever with an enlarged right lung mass and pleural effusion. His cytological examination revealed undifferentiated epithelioid and rhabdoid/plas

Carcinogenic effect of N-bis(2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine by a single administration in rats.

The carcinogenic effect of a single intraperitoneal injection of N-bis)2-hydroxypropyl)nitrosamine (BHP) was studied in male Wistar rats. Lung tumors (adenomas and adenocarcinomas) had the highest incidence (100%). Fewer neoplasms were induced in the thyroid (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 36%), kidney (renal cell carcinomas, 8%), and the sigmoid colon (adenomas and adenocarcinomas, 9%). No pancreatic neoplasms were found.

Pulmonary Cystic Disease and Its Mimics.

Cystic diseases of the lung encompass a fairly broad variety of different diseases with causes including genetic abnormalities, smoking-related problems, developmental disorders, malignant neoplasms, and inflammatory processes. In addition, there are several diagnoses that closely resemble cystic lung disease, including cavitary diseases, cystic bronchiectasis, emphysema, and cystic changes in fibrosing interstitial lung disease. This article provides a review of cystic lung disease and its gross and histologic mimics.

A tricky and rare cause of pulmonary eosinophilia: myeloid/lymphoid neoplasm with eosinophilia and rearrangement of PDGFRA.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic lung diseases represent a heterogeneous group of disorders with prominent infiltrate of eosinophils in lung interstitium and alveolar spaces. Peripheral blood eosinophilia is often present. Infections, drugs, allergens, toxic agents have to be evaluated as possible causes of eosinophilic lung infiltrates. The category of myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and rearrangement of PDGFRA, PDGFRB, FGFR1 and PCM1-JAK2 represents an uncommon cause of eosinophilic lung infiltrate. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 70-year old man complaining of dry cough and

Adult-onset multifocal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in the bone marrow, lung, liver, and brain: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE), a rare form of vascular neoplasm, is typically seen in children. In this paper, we report a unique case of KHE replacing bone marrow tissue mimicking myeloproliferative neoplasm with additional involvement in the lung, liver, and brain in a 60-year-old Caucasian woman. The patient was initially seen in the hematology department for the chief complaint of epigastric pain and anemia. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed mild splenomegaly with iron deposition secondary to extramedullary hematopoiesis. Additional workup was inconclusive. Subseq

Sex-specific familial risks of urinary bladder cancer and associated neoplasms in Sweden.

Male gender and a family history of cancer are established risk factors for urinary bladder neoplasms. This study used the latest update of the Swedish Family-Cancer Database, which includes 42,255 bladder cancer patients, to investigate the sex-specific incidences and types of tumors in relatives of bladder cancer patients. Men with parents or siblings affected by lung cancer did not show an increased risk of bladder neoplasms. Among women, the familial association was restricted to daughters of women with lung cancer. Brothers showed higher risks than the sons of bladder cancer patients. Men
