BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term autoimmune disorder that mostly affects the joints and leads to the destruction of cartilage. An RA model in non-human primates is especially useful because of their close phylogenetic relationship to humans in terms of cross-reactivity to compounds developed using modern drug technologies.
METHODS: We used a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model in Macaca fascicularis. CIA was induced by the immunization of chicken type II collagen. Swelling was measured as the longitudinal and transverse axes of 16 proximal interphalangeal joints.

Extragonadal teratomas have not been reported in nonhuman primates. A female cynomolgus monkey, a vehicle control in an exploratory toxicity study, was necropsied. Microscopic examination of an extragonadal mass in the animal's craniodorsal retroperitoneum revealed a teratoma. This is the first report of an extragonadal teratoma in a nonhuman primate.

Nonhuman primates have been a common animal model to evaluate experimentally induced malformations. Reports on spontaneous malformations are important in determining the background incidence of congenital anomalies in specific species and in evaluating experimental results. Here we report on a stillborn cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) with multiple congenital anomalies from the colony maintained at the Southwest National Primate Research Center at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, San Antonio, Texas. Physical findings included low birth weight, craniorachischisis, facial abnorma

A cynomolgus macaque presented with an ecchymotic and edematous left leg approximately 1 wk after a blood sample had been collected from the left femoral vein. Ecchymosis was noted in the femoral triangle, prepuce, and scrotum. The animal was not febrile or exhibiting signs of pain or distress. Duplex Doppler ultrasound imaging was used to evaluate the area. An arteriovenous fistula between the femoral artery and vein, accompanied by a pseudoaneurysm arising from the femoral artery, was identified. Various invasive and noninvasive treatment options for the pseudoaneurysm, including surgical re

BACKGROUND: Vestigial remnants of the mesonephric duct and paramesonephric duct are well-known developmental abnormalities of the human testis and epididymis.
METHODS AND RESULTS: During routine macroscopic and histological examination of four cynomolgus macaques, three different forms of testicular and epididymal appendages were observed, namely a unilateral appendix testis, a bilateral appendix epididymidis, and several vasa aberrantia. By histological and immunohistochemical examinations it could be demonstrated that both the appendix testis and the appendix epididymidis consisted of a cen

Olfactory ensheathing glial cells (OEGs) interact with a wide repertoire of cell types and support extension of olfactory axons (OAs) within the olfactory pathway. OEGs are thought to exclude OAs from contact with all other cells between the olfactory epithelium and the glomerulus of the olfactory bulb. These properties have lead to testing to determine whether OEGs support axonal growth following transplantation. The cellular interactions of transplanted OEGs will probably resemble those that occur within the normal pathway where interactions between OEGs and fibroblasts are prominent. No pre

We present here a systematic mapping of nAChR subunit mRNAs in Macaca mulatta brain. A fragment, from the transmembrane segments MIII to MIV of Macaca neuronal nAChR subunits was cloned, and shown to exhibit high identity (around 95%) to the corresponding human subunits. Then, specific oligodeoxynucleotides were synthesized for in situ hybridization experiments. Both alpha4 and beta2 mRNA signals were widely distributed in the brain, being stronger in the thalamus and in the dopaminergic cells of the mesencephalon. Most brain nuclei displayed both alpha4 and beta2 signals with the exception of

The neurovirulent properties of attenuated dengue-2 and yellow fever (YF) vaccines, dengue-2 (DEN-2) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses were studied in crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Number of central nervous system sites (as proportion affected) with neurovirulence (NV) lesions were compared. The results indicate that these monkeys reliably developed NV-lesion when inoculated with either JE or YF vaccine viruses (87%). NV-lesions occurred in a minority when inoculated with DEN-2 vaccine virus, were of minimal severity (9%), were probably biologically insignificant, and were of

The metabolic fate of chronically administered caffeine was examined in monkeys. Caffeine and equal parts of citric acid were added to the drinking water of four female monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). The concentration was gradually increased over a 10-week period to 0.35 mg/ml for three of the monkeys. A monkey that was lactating, but had no infant, was exposed to caffeine in the drinking water at a concentration of 0.30 mg/ml. At these doses, administered for up to 50 weeks, there were no overt signs of toxicity as indicated by food and fluid consumption, body weight, or general condition of

The growth of the masseter muscle in eight infant, juvenile, and adolescent female rhesus monkeys (M. mulatta) was examined over a 2.5 year period using serial radiographic cephalometric techniques with the aid of radiopaque muscle markers. The radiopaque markers, which are composed of small pieces of root canal broach inserted into the muscle belly, make it possible to determine longitudinal masseter muscle growth as well as migration of the masseter muscle relative to the mandible. It was found that the masseter muscle increased in length by 64% during the total growth period, most of which

Longitudinal studies of the rhesus monkey reveal a syndrome of diabetes mellitus in those that become middle-aged and obese. The sequence of events in the development of the disease progresses from normoinsulinemia with normoglycemia through stages of hyperinsulinemia followed by below normal insulin levels with hyperglycemia and glycosuria. We believe the rhesus to be an excellent nonhuman primate model for maturity-onset diabetes in humans.

Exoerythrocytic (EE) schizonts of Plasmodium fragile were found in liver tissue acquired 7, 8, 9, and 10 days following inoculation of Macaca mulatta monkeys with sporozoites from Anopheles balabacensis balabacensis mosquitoes. There was little to distinguish the EE bodies of P. fragile from EE bodies of many of the other species of primate malaria.

Smallpox is believed not to occur naturally in species other than man. However, reports of several epizootics of an exanthematous disease, similar to smallpox, in wild monkeys have raised the question of a simian reservoir. If such a reservoir for smallpox exists, the eradication of this disease from the world would be a difficult or impossible task. Transmission of smallpox in Macaca irus has been studied to determine whether transmission occurs and if infection chains can be maintained by this species.Transmission was consistently accomplished by both contact and aerosol routes. In the conta

For a fuller understanding of the nerve supply to the muscles of the pelvic outlet in man, 4 pelvic-halves of crab-eating monkeys and 6 pelvic-halves of Japanese monkeys were minutely dissected. 1) The composition of the pudendal plexus tends to be limited to 2 segments, S1 and S2. 2) If we consider the origin of the nerves, the pudendal plexus is divided into 2, the first or medial and the second or lateral parts. From the first part arise the pelvic splanchnic nerves, the nerve to the iliopubocaudalis and the nerve to the ischiocaudalis. From the second part the dorsal nerve of the penis or

The Japanese macaque is an endemic species consisting of two subspecies: Macaca fuscata fuscata (MFF) and Macaca fuscata yakui (MFY). The MFY is indigenous to Yakushima Island and represents a subspecies of MFF that lives from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan. However, the differences in the skulls of the MFY and MFF are unknown, despite these subspecies having different skull sizes. The maxillary sinus (MS) indicates that the features of the frontal view reflect the transversal growth of the maxilla of the skull. In this study, we show the MS structures of the MFF (n = 9, 18 sides) and MFY

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is an important zoonotic parasite that is commonly found in non-human primates (NHPs). Consequently, there is the potential for transmission of this pathogen from NHPs to humans. However, molecular characterization of the isolates of Cryptosporidium from NHPs remains relatively poor. The aim of the present work was to (i) determine the prevalence; and (ii) perform a genetic characterization of the Cryptosporidium isolated from captive Macaca fascicularis and M. mulatta on Hainan Island in southern China.
METHODS: A total of 223 fresh fecal samples were collected fr

INTRODUCTION: Neutrophil migration is a hallmark of acute inflammation and represents a key component of the early innate immune response to bacterial infection. We previously demonstrated the ability to track neutrophil movement from bone marrow to blood and subsequently to tissues using 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) pulse labeling in healthy adult rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), observing a consistent pattern of neutrophil kinetics during homeostasis.
METHODS: In this study, we extend our analyses to investigate the kinetics of neutrophil movement during acute inflammatory responses usin
