Value of machine learning in predicting TAVI outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has become a commonly applied procedure for high-risk aortic valve stenosis patients. However, for some patients, this procedure does not result in the expected benefits. Previous studies indicated that it is difficult to predict the beneficial effects for specific patients. We aim to study the accuracy of various traditional machine learning (ML) algorithms in the prediction of TAVI outcomes. METHODS AND RESULTS: Clinical and laboratory data from 1,478 TAVI patients from a single centre were collected. The outcome measures were impro

Biomedical informatics and machine learning for clinical genomics.

While tens of thousands of pathogenic variants are used to inform the many clinical applications of genomics, there remains limited information on quantitative disease risk for the majority of variants used in clinical practice. At the same time, rising demand for genetic counselling has prompted a growing need for computational approaches that can help interpret genetic variation. Such tasks include predicting variant pathogenicity and identifying variants that are too common to be penetrant. To address these challenges, researchers are increasingly turning to integrative informatics approach

Chemical shifts in molecular solids by machine learning.

Due to their strong dependence on local atonic environments, NMR chemical shifts are among the most powerful tools for strucutre elucidation of powdered solids or amorphous materials. Unfortunately, using them for structure determination depends on the ability to calculate them, which  comes at the cost of high accuracy first-principles calculations. Machine learning has recently emerged as a way to overcome the need for quantum chemical calculations, but for chemical shifts in solids it is hindered by the chemical and combinatorial space spanned by molecular solids, the strong dependency of c

Noise-resilient training of machine learning interatomic potentials.

The accuracy of machine learning interatomic potentials suffers from reference data that contain numerical noise. Often originating from unconverged or inconsistent electronic-structure calculations, this noise is challenging to identify. Existing mitigation strategies, such as manual filtering or iterative refinement of outliers, require either substantial expert effort or multiple expensive retraining cycles, making them difficult to scale to large datasets. Here, we introduce a noise-resilient training method that automatically down-weighs noisy samples, without requiring additional referen

Advancing Patient-Centred AI With Adaptive Machine Learning.

Healthcare services and data ecosystems remain fragmented, inequitable and misaligned with patient, clinician and public health needs. Three pathways to patient-centred Artificial Intelligence (AI) have emerged to address this: data collaboration, Whole System Approaches and digital inclusion. Each has advanced the field. However, none delivers the continuous, participatory and outcome-grounded learning that equitable AI demands. The populations whose data drives AI learning must also be the populations who benefit from it. This principle has not been structurally embedded in any existing path

Cross-cancer survival prediction using machine learning models.

Among the many challenges faced by healthcare systems, cancer remains one of the most urgent. This makes the application of artificial intelligence a critical tool for enhancing early detection and optimizing treatment strategies, especially given the growing volume of patient data being collected. In this study, machine learning models trained on data for a specific type of cancer were employed to predict three-year survival after diagnosis for other cancer types. Two groups were considered: the most frequent cancers and those related to the digestive system. The data were extracted from the

Neuroscience-Inspired Deep Learning Brain-Machine Interface Decoder.

Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) aim to decode motor intentions from neural activity to enable direct control of external devices. However, most existing decoders rely on monolithic architectures that fail to capture the distinct neural representations of different joint movement directions, limiting their generalizability. In this work, we propose a Single-Direction CNN-LSTM decoder inspired by motor cortex encoding mechanisms, which separately models extension and flexion dynamics through parallel CNN-LSTM branches. Each branch extracts spatial-temporal features from neural spike data and pre

Uveal Melanoma Ground Truth Labeling in Machine Learning.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Uveal melanoma (UM) is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor among adults and has a high risk of metastasis. Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) tools have been developed to support the management of UM across different clinical tasks. The definition of ground truth, the reference standard that models use in training and development, greatly influences the performance and clinical relevance of the models. Currently, there is limited consensus regarding which ground truth methods are most appropriate for each clinical application. This review aims to eval

Machine learning reveals microbiome differences by periodontitis severity.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease driven by microbial dysbiosis, yet the microbial signatures associated with severity remain incompletely understood. This study investigated changes in subgingival microbial composition across clinically defined severity groups and evaluated the performance of microbiome-based machine-learning models for classifying periodontitis severity. Subgingival plaque samples from 84 patients were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Microbial diversity showed a modest decreasing trend with increasing severity, although differences were not statistical

Predicting Postpartum Depression Using Imbalance-Aware Machine Learning.

Postpartum depression (PPD) affects nearly one in five mothers, yet many cases remain undetected. This study demonstrates the value of a leakage-resistant, rigorously designed machine learning pipeline for early prediction using psychosocial data from 1,430 women during pregnancy. Concept-level feature harmonization addressed data artifacts, while repeated group-aware cross-validation, calibration, and recall-oriented thresholding ensured robust evaluation. Class imbalance was handled using weighting and SMOTE. Models showed strong performance (ROC-AUC: 0.762-0.801; PR-AUC: 0.400-0.490), with

Machine Learning Approaches for Mortality Prediction in ARDS.

Mortality prediction in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is critical for early triage and targeted treatment. In this study, we compared multiple machine learning models to predict 90-day all-cause mortality and 28-day hospital mortality in ARDS patients, with all models achieving good discrimination (AUC: 0.715-0.753 and 0.693-0.721, respectively). Among models, XGBoost achieved the most consistent balance of AUC, recall, and F1 score across both outcomes, making it the most clinically appropriate model where underpredicting high-risk patients brings significant consequences. Adaptive Segmentation of EEG for Machine Learning Applications.

OBJECTIVE: Electroencephalography (EEG) data is derived by sampling continuous neurological time series signals. In order to prepare EEG signals for machine learning, the signal must be divided into manageable segments. The current naive approach uses arbitrary fixed time slices, which may have limited biological relevance because brain states are not confined to fixed intervals. We investigate whether adaptive segmentation methods are beneficial for machine learning EEG analysis. APPROACH: We introduce a novel adaptive segmentation method, CTXSEG, that creates variable-length segments based

Automatic assessment of voice quality using machine learning.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and validate machine learning (ML) models for automated prediction of perceptual dysphonia severity, as indexed by the Grade (G) parameter of the GRBAS scale, using acoustic analyses of sustained vowels. The overarching goal was to enhance objectivity, reproducibility, and efficiency in clinical voice assessment. METHODS: A total of 524 sustained/a/samples were collected from three databases. The evaluations of all recordings by ten raters using the GRBAS scale, that achieved excellent interrater reliability (Krippendorff's α = 0.96), were modelled. For

Multimodal Machine Learning Approach for Diagnosing Atopic Dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent, chronic inflammatory skin disease with diverse clinical presentations, often overlapping with other dermatoses. Its diagnosis remains largely dependent on clinical expertise, leading to variability and limited diagnostic accuracy, particularly among general practitioners. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) model that integrates lesion image analysis and structured anamnesis to improve AD diagnosis. METHODS: This diagnostic study was conducted in two phases: Phase 1 used retrospective data from 2

A machine learning-derived dietary pattern for aging.

Diet is a modifiable determinant of aging. We develop and validate the Machine-learning YouTHful (MYTH) Diet, a dietary pattern associated with reduced aging-related mortality. Using data from 191,689 participants in the UK Biobank, we conducted a food-wide association analysis and identified 18 food groups significantly associated with aging-related mortality. A Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM) model was used to rank food importance, leading to the construction of a 10-component MYTH Diet score (range: 0-10). Higher MYTH scores were consistently associated with reduced aging-related
