[Geographic approach in malaria control in the central highlands of Madagascar].

Following the severe malaria outbreak in the central highlands in Madagascar in 1986, a vector control program by use DDT pm 75 house-spraying has been implemented to operate in areas located at altitudes between 1000 and 1500 m. Early treatment with chloroquine has also been incorporated in the control program. To detect areas at particular high risk for malaria outbreak the Geographic Information System (GIS) has been applied and tested. The study has shown that the system can be used in malaria surveillance in order to identify areas in which an intense distribution of Anopheles funestus ca

Epidemiological and diagnostic aspects of the outbreak of pneumonic plague in Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Plague is a re-emerging disease and pneumonic plague is the most feared clinical form. We describe a well-documented outbreak of pneumonic plague in Madagascar. METHODS: Field epidemiological data were collected. Biological tests (microscopy, culture of Yersinia pestis, F1 antigen ELISA and dipstick assays, IgG anti-F1 ELISA) were done on sputum, serum, or necropsy samples. The infection rate among 154 contacts was assessed by anti-F1 serological techniques. FINDINGS: The index case was a bubonic patient with a secondary lung infection, who contaminated a traditional healer and h

Recent emergence of new variants of Yersinia pestis in Madagascar.

Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, has been responsible for at least three pandemics. During the last pandemic, which started in Hong Kong in 1894, the microorganism colonized new, previously unscathed geographical areas where it has become well established. The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate the genetic stability of Y. pestis strains introduced into a new environment just under a century ago and to follow the epidemiology of any new genetic variant detected. In the present study, 187 strains of Y. pestis isolated between 1939 and 1996 from different regions of

Rift Valley fever epizootic in the central highlands of Madagascar.

Between February and April 1991, unusual numbers of bovine abortion around Antananarivo (central highlands, Madagascar) were reported by official veterinary services. Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus isolations were made from sixteen aborted foetuses and one dead calf in different foci. Using monoclonal antibodies, the isolated viruses were found to be different from the 1979 RVF strains isolated in Madagascar from mosquitoes and human laboratory infection, and closer to African RVF strains. In a bovine population--previously characterized by a negative or very low RVF antibody prevalence--a high

Schistosomiasis and Intestinal Helminthiases in a Remote Area of Central Madagascar.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis and intestinal helminthiases are significant public health issues that severely impact the development of children and adolescents in impoverished regions, such as the rural village of Soavinarivo in central Madagascar. These issues are often associated with deficient hygienic and sanitary conditions. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted in October 2017 on children aged 3-15 years. A total of 114 stool samples were collected and analysed using microscopy and molecular techniques to identify schistosomiasis and intestinal helminthiases. Descrip

Epidemiology of Malaria in Northern Madagascar as Exemplified by the Mampikony District.

UNLABELLED: Malaria is a parasitic disease caused by Plasmodium protozoa, which is a serious public health issue in Madagascar, an island country located off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Despite significant efforts to prevent the spread of communicable diseases, the country's epidemiological situation is worrying and has been deteriorating in recent years, mostly due to poverty and limited access to healthcare. The aim of the present study was to assess the prevalence rates of malaria in northern Madagascar, as exemplified by the Mampikony District, between 2023 and 2024, as well a

Colonization of Anopheles coustani, a neglected malaria vector in Madagascar.

Anopheles coustani has long been recognized as a secondary malaria vector in Africa. It has recently been involved in the transmission of both Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax in Madagascar. As most secondary malaria vectors, An. coustani mainly bites outdoors, which renders the control of this mosquito species difficult using classical malaria control measures, such as the use of bed nets or indoor residual spraying of insecticides. For a better understanding of the biology and vector competence of a vector species, it is useful to rear the species in the laboratory. The absence of a colony

Anthropological overview of kangaroo care in community settings in Madagascar.

The management of preterm births remains a major challenge in Madagascar, given the lack of equipped facilities in rural areas, and the absence of precise data concerning the incidence of such births. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the kangaroo method (skin-to-skin contact) for the management of preterm infants. In this article, we examine the conditions for success and the obstacles facing kangaroo care in community settings in Madagascar. We performed a qualitative research, collecting data from the districts of Antananarivo and Mahajanga in 2021. In total, 54 semi-structured

[Management of chromoblastomycosis, a challenge for limited-resource countries such as Madagascar].

INTRODUCTION: Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic fungal infection of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by dematiaceous fungi. CBM lesions are recalcitrant and extremely difficult to eradicate. We report three cases of CBM with difficulties in therapeutic management. OBSERVATION: Three men aged 36, 50 and 67 years, all farmers, presented for between three and ten years with hyperkeratotic, scaly plaques with black dots on the right thigh and left leg, respectively. For all patients, mycological examination showed fumagoid cells, all of which were pathognomonic for CBM. PCR identified

Misuse of Topical Corticosteroids for Cosmetic Purpose in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

This cross-sectional study was conducted in Antananarivo, Madagascar, from June to September 2012. We aim to evaluate the misuse of TC on the face for cosmetic purpose and the adverse effects due to its application. A questionnaire-based analysis was done among females who use topical corticosteroids on the face for cosmetic purpose. Of the 770 women questioned, 384 (49,8%) used topical corticosteroids for cosmetic purpose whose mean age was 38 years (range 16-73 years). Two hundred and sixty-one females (68%) used TC combined with handcrafted cosmetics, and 123 (32%) used TC alone. "Pandalao,

[Special features of humeral osteomyelitis in four children in Madagascar].

The purpose of this report is to describe the epidemiological and pathological features of humeral osteomyelitis based on four pediatric cases observed during the subacute and chronic stage over a 12-month period. All locations were encountered. The offending bacterium was always Staphylococcus aureus. All four patients presented involvement of both the shoulder and elbow. Spreading of infection was largely due to the adverse effect of traditional massage therapy performed on these young patients. The poor living conditions of these children accounted for the existence of multiple foci of infe

[Tinea capitis in Madagascar: a survey in a primary school in Antsirabe].

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis is a common infection among schoolchildren in developing countries. This condition is still under-reported in Madagascar. In order to assess the prevalence of Tinea capitis in Madagascar, we conducted a study in a primary school in Antsirabe, a town located in the country's high central territories. METHODS: Samples were taken from 210 children in the 4 school classes aged between 6 and 14 years. Only children with scaling lesions or with alopecia were sampled. No microsporic gray-patch ringworm was found in any of the children. Samples were obtained from a total of

[Persistence of an endemic circulation of the West Nile virus in Madagascar].

The wide geographic distribution of the West Nile virus and the increase in virulence observed since 1994 in the Mediterranean basin, central Europe and North America, with several outbreaks of lethal encephalitis, demonstrate the importance of regular surveillance of the epidemiological data regarding this virus in the world. The Institut Pasteur de Madagascar has shown between 1975 and 1990 that this arbovirus was most abundant in Madagascar, where it had an endemic circulation. There has been no further study since that time. In order to evaluate the level of circulation, the seroprevalence

A pug-nosed crocodyliform from the Late Cretaceous of Madagascar.

Although the image of crocodyliforms as 'unchanged living fossils' is naive, several morphological features of the group are thought to have varied only within narrow limits during the course of evolution. These include an elongate snout with an array of conical teeth, a dorsoventrally flattened skull and a posteriorly positioned jaw articulation, which provides a powerful bite force. Here we report an exquisitely preserved specimen of a new taxon from the Late Cretaceous of Madagascar that deviates profoundly from this Bauplan, possessing an extremely blunt snout, a tall, rounded skull, an an

[Juvenile recto-colonic polyposis. Apropos of a case in Madagascar].

The authors relate the first case of juvenile polyposis coli noticed in Madagascar. It is a sporadic case developing a serious clinic picture with an accidentally fatal end in a 7 years old Malagasy girl. They recall the principal epidemiological, anatomopathological, clinic and evolutive features which are typical of this polyposis. They wish that the way to medical progress will soon lead to better knowledge of the place of the intestinal polyposis in African countries.

[The large island--impressions of a medical parasitological trip to Madagascar].

The course of an investigation trip through Madagascar is sketched. It allowed to analyze the parasitological situation. It is explained with the sociological and economical facts and the unusual fauna of this island. The two biggest problems are Malaria tropica and schistosomatosis (bilharziasis). Further, Ancylostoma, Ascaris, taeniids, and Wuchereria occur. Plague is rare. Fasciola gigantica has been introduced since short time only. Introduction of other parasites must be feared. Sleeping illness and nagana are lacking, as well as rabies, yellow fever, Fasciola hepatica, Echinococcus granu
