Hyperventilation-induced human cerebral magnetic fields non-invasively monitored by multichannel 'direct current' magnetoencephalography.

Self-paced hyperventilation (HV) induces slow cerebral magnetic field changes which were monitored and mapped continuously over 15 min using 49-channel DC-coupled ('direct current') magnetoencephalography (DC-MEG) based on a modulation technique. In nine/nine healthy subjects HV caused an increase (range: 1.1-6.2 pT) of the mean global DC-MEG field strength which slowly decayed after HV termination (mean time constant: 2 min). The complex HV-related field patterns were distinctly different from mainly dipolar somatosensory evoked field maps (N20m) in four/four subjects. Thus, current sources i

Pineal-hypothalamic tract mediation of picotesla magnetic fields in the treatment of neurological disorders.

The objective of this study is analysis of the clinical efficacy of picotesla magnetic fields in the treatment of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis. The method utilized involved the exogenous application of physiologic, very weak magnetic fields to the brain by Sandyk, Anninos, Derpapas and Tsagas. The magnetic device produced a magnetic field ranging from about 5 x 10(-8) gauss to about 2.5 x 10(-7) gauss at frequencies of 2 to 7 Hertz. The wave form was sinusoidal and the device was positioned about the posterior portion of the corpus callosum most specifically to influenc

The effects of external picoTesla range magnetic fields on the EEG in Parkinson's disease.

We report a 68 year old man with a 7 year history of Parkinson's disease (PD) who obtained little benefit from treatment by dopaminergic and anticholinergic agents. During the six months prior to presentation, he experienced more rapid deterioration in symptoms including memory functions, increasing depression, and dystonia of the foot. External application of picoTesla range magnetic fields (MF) resulted in rapid attenuation of tremor and foot dystonia with improvements in gait, postural reflexes, mood, anxiety, cognitive, and autonomic functions. Plasma prolactin and luteinizing hormone (LH)

Resolution of longstanding symptoms of multiple sclerosis by application of picoTesla range magnetic fields.

Recent clinical reports have suggested that treatment with extremely weak magnetic fields (MF) in the picoTesla range is an efficacious modality for the symptomatic therapy in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) during the remission and exacerbation periods of the disease. The present communication concerns a 64 year old woman with a 22 year history of MS of the chronic-progressive type who presented with a longstanding history of ataxia of gait, weakness in the legs, difficulties with swallowing, loss of bladder control, blurred vision, diplopia, chronic fatigue, and cognitive impairment. Further observations on the unique efficacy of picoTesla range magnetic fields in Parkinson's disease.

External application of picoTesla range magnetic fields (MF) has been reported recently to be efficacious in the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) including those who manifest levodopa-related dyskinesias. In the present communication, we present four additional Parkinsonian patients who showed, within a brief period of time, marked improvement in motor symptoms after therapy with MF. Three of the patients had been maintained on antiParkinsonian medication during treatment with MF while the fourth patient had never received pharmacotherapy. Improvement with magnetic therapy w

Lack of acute effects of 20 mT, 50 Hz magnetic fields on murine haemopoiesis.

Some epidemiological studies have drawn attention to a possible association between exposure to extremely low-frequency (ELF) electromagnetic fields and the development of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in adults. At present there is no experimental evidence for such an association. We have investigated the acute effects of power frequency magnetic fields on haemopoiesis in CBA/H mice known to be susceptible to the induction of AML after exposure to ionizing radiation. Up to 19 days after exposure to 50 Hz fields at 20 mT for 7 days no significant effects on peripheral blood characteristics wer

Systemically delivered antibody-labeled magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are less toxic than plain nanoparticles when activated by alternating magnetic fields.

OBJECTIVE: Toxicity from off-target heating with magnetic hyperthermia (MHT) is generally assumed to be understood. MHT research focuses on development of more potent heating magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs), yet our understanding of factors that define biodistribution following systemic delivery remains limited. Preclinical development relies on mouse models, thus understanding off-target heating with MHT in mice provides critical knowledge for clinical development. METHODS: Eight-week old female nude mice received a single tail vein injection of bionized nanoferrite (BNF) MIONs or

Collective Motion and Programmable Self-Organization of Rotating Active Particles Manipulated by Magnetic Fields.

Rotating magnetic microparticles are classic active matter systems dominated by competing magnetic dipolar attraction and spin-induced hydrodynamic repulsion, whose collective behaviors under programmable magnetic field remain insufficiently characterized. This work builds a two-dimensional orthogonal Helmholtz coil experimental setup to investigate the collective motion and self-organization of magnetic microparticles. For single-component assemblies, the hexatic order parameter varies non-monotonically with driving frequency and particle area fraction; an intermediate frequency range (60-80

Anti-inflammatory activity of magnetic fields emitted by graphene devices on cultured human cells.

BACKGROUND: Inflammation plays a key role in various diseases such as pancreatitis, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Acute inflammation involves processes like vasodilation, increased vascular permeability, and leukocyte accumulation, which lead to cellular damage due to reactive oxygen species (ROS). Low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMFs) have shown potential in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. This study assesses the effectiveness of a new wearable device containing graphene quantum dots in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in Jurkat T cells stimulated by lipopo

Metallofullerenol alleviates alcoholic liver damage via ROS clearance under static magnetic and electric fields.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a common chronic redox disease caused by increased alcohol consumption. Abstinence is a major challenge for people with alcohol dependence, and approved drugs have limited efficacy. Therefore, this study aimed to explore a new treatment strategy for ALD using ferroferric oxide endohedral fullerenol (Fe3O4@C60(OH)n) in combination with static magnetic and electric fields (sBE). The primary hepatocytes of 8-9-week-old female BALB/c mice were used to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed combination treatment. A mouse chronic binge ethanol feeding model was establ

Acute and subchronic toxicity of 20  kHz and 60  kHz magnetic fields in rats.

Despite increasing use of intermediate frequency (IF) magnetic fields (MFs) in occupational and domestic settings, scientific evidence necessary for health risk assessments of IF MF is insufficient. Male and female Crl:CD(SD) rats (12 per sex per group) were exposed to 20 kHz, 0.20 mT(root mean square, rms) or 60 kHz, 0.10 mT(rms) sinusoidal MFs for 22 h day(-1) for 14 days (acute) or 13 weeks (subchronic). Estimating magnetic fields of homes near transmission lines in the California Power Line Study.

The California Power Line Study is a case-control study investigating the relation between residences near transmission lines and risk of childhood leukemia. It includes 5788 childhood leukemia cases and 5788 matched primary controls born between 1986 and 2007. We describe the methodology for estimating magnetic fields at study residences as well as for characterizing sources of uncertainty in these estimates. Birth residences of study subjects were geocoded and their distances to transmission lines were ascertained. 302 residences were deemed sufficiently close to transmission lines to have n

Pulsed extremely low-frequency magnetic fields stimulate microvesicle release from human monocytic leukaemia cells.

Microvesicles are released from cell surfaces constitutively during early apoptosis or upon activation with various stimuli including sublytic membrane attack complex (MAC). This study shows that an alternating current, pulsed, extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (0.3 μT at 10 Hz, 6V AC) induced transient plasma membrane damage that allowed calcium influx. This in turn caused a release of stimulated microvesicles (sMV). When extracellular calcium was chelated with EGTA, sMV biogenesis initiated by ELFMF was markedly reduced and the reduction was less than when the stimulation was the

Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields from the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices in healthy newborns.

Although brain development has been actively investigated in animals, maturation of the cerebral cortex in human newborns is still poorly understood. This study aimed at characterizing the cortical areas participating in tactile processing in human neonates. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields were recorded from 21 healthy full-term newborns during natural sleep. Altogether, four cortical areas were activated by tactile stimulation: the contra- and ipsilateral primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortices. The contralateral SI was activated first in all the newborns. This early acti

Alimentary hyperlipemia of rabbits is affected by exposure to low-intensity pulsed magnetic fields.

An experimental study was carried out in rabbits to investigate the effects of exposing rabbits to low-intensity pulsed magnetic fields (PMFs) on alimentary hyperlipemia. Thirty female white big ear rabbits were randomly divided into three groups. The normal group was fed with a standard chow diet and the other two groups (hyperlipid and magnetic) were fed with the chow diet supplemented with cholesterol, yolk powder and lard. The magnetic group was exposed to 15 Hz pulsed magnetic fields. After 8 weeks, levels of blood lipid and indices of hemorheology were examined. In addition, histomorphol

Power-frequency electric and magnetic fields in the light of Draper et al. 2005.

Power-frequency electric and magnetic fields are produced wherever electricity is used; exposure is ubiquitous. Epidemiologic studies find an association between children living in homes with the highest magnetic fields and childhood leukemia, but bias is a possible alternative to a causal explanation. A new study, Draper et al., looks at residence close to high-voltage power lines, one source of exposure to such fields, and its design avoids any obvious bias. It finds elevated childhood leukemia rates, but extending too far from the power lines to be straightforwardly compatible with the exis

Large granular lymphocytic (LGL) leukemia in rats exposed to intermittent 60 Hz magnetic fields.

An animal model for large granular lymphocytic (LGL) leukemia in male Fischer 344 rats was utilized to determine whether magnetic field exposure can be shown to influence the progression of leukemia. We previously reported that exposure to continuous 60 Hz, 1 mT magnetic fields did not significantly alter the clinical progression of LGL leukemia in young male rats following injection of spleen cells from donor leukemic rats. Results presented here extend those studies with the following objectives: (a) to replicate the previous study of continuous 60 Hz magnetic field exposures, but using fewe

The possible role of contact current in cancer risk associated with residential magnetic fields.

Residential electrical wiring safety practices in the US result in the possibility of a small voltage (up to a few tenths of a volt) on appliance surfaces with respect to water pipes or other grounded surfaces. This "open circuit voltage" (V(OC)) will cause "contact current" to flow in a person who touches the appliance and completes an electrical circuit to ground. This paper presents data suggesting that contact current due to V(OC) is an exposure that may explain the reported associations of residential magnetic fields with childhood leukemia. Our analysis is based on a computer model of a
