Morphology-Controlled Green Synthesis of Magnetic Nanoparticles Using Extracts of 'Hairy' Roots: Environmental Application and Toxicity Evaluation.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were "green" synthesized from a FeCl3/FeSO4/CoCl2 mixture using ethanolic extracts of Artemisia tilesii Ledeb 'hairy' roots. The effect of chemical composition and reducing power of ethanolic extracts on the morphology, size destribution and other features of obtained MNPs was evaluated. Depending on the extract properties, nanosized magnetic materials of spherical (8-11 nm), nanorod-like (15-24 nm) and cubic (14-24 nm) shapes were obtained via self-assembly. Microspherical MNPs composed of nanoclusters were observed when using extract of the control root line in

[Preparation of magnetic bifunctional materials for exosome capture from serum and phosphopeptide enrichment].

As a clinical sample, serum is widely used in disease research due to the minimally invasive nature of its collection and easy accessibility. Exosomes in serum not only carry various bioactive substances such as proteins and nucleic acids but also participate in intercellular communication, which is closely associated with the development of multiple diseases. As one of the most critical post-translational modifications, protein phosphorylation dynamically regulates cellular signaling networks and participates in disease pathogenesis. However, due to the low abundance of exosomes in serum and

Investigation of Magnetic Electrodes in Conducting Polymeric Materials: Electrochemical Properties of a Fullerene[C60 ]-Pd Polymer and Iron Oxide Magnetic Nanocomposite.

A composite of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles and coordination fullerene polymer (C60 Pd3 )n is formed by chemical deposition of spherical polymer nanoparticles on iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles in benzene containing C60 and Pd(0) complex. The composition of the composite can be controlled by the amount of magnetite and concentration of polymerization precursors as well as the time of polymerization. The magnetic composite material Fe3 O4 -γFe2 O3 /(C60 Pd3 )n is used as a model system to investigate its deposition on a magnetic electrode and its electrochemical properties. The iron oxid

Raman microscopy allows to follow internalization, subcellular accumulation and fate of iron oxide nanoparticles in cells.

An important issue in the context of both potenial toxicity of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) and their medical applications is tracking of the internalization process of these nanomaterials into living cells, as well as their localization and fate within them. The typical methods used for this purpose are transmission electron microscopy, confocal fluorescence microscopy as well as light-scattering techniques including dark-field microscopy and flow cytometry. All the techniques mentioned have their advantages and disadvantages. Among the problems it is necessary to mention complicated sampl

Cr(VI) Adsorption on Engineered Iron Oxide Nanoparticles: Exploring Complexation Processes and Water Chemistry.

Surface-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles are promising adsorbents due to their large surface areas and ease of separation after contaminant removal. In this work, the affinity of Cr(VI) adsorption to 8 nm surface-functionalized superparamagnetic magnetite nanoparticles was determined for surface coatings with amine (trimethyloctadecylammonium bromide, CTAB) and carboxyl (stearic acid, SA) functional groups. Cr(VI) adsorbed more strongly to the CTAB-coated nanoparticles than to the SA-coated materials due to electrostatic interactions between positively charged CTAB and anionic Cr(VI) spec

Ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles for enhanced tumor penetration.

The intrinsic pathological characteristics of tumor microenvironments restrict the deep penetration of nanomedicines by passive diffusion. Magnetophoresis is a promising strategy to improve the tumor penetration of nanomedicines aided by the external magnetic propulsive force. However, the research thus far has been focused on large nanoparticles, while ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (<∼20 nm) exhibit better performance in many applications such as cancer diagnosis and treatment. Herein, we aim to determine and understand the penetration of ultrasmall Fe3O4 nanop

Large-scale production of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles by flame spray pyrolysis: In vitro biological evaluation for biomedical applications.

Despite the large number of synthesis methodologies described for superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), the search for their large-scale production for their widespread use in biomedical applications remains a mayor challenge. Flame Spray Pyrolysis (FSP) could be the solution to solve this limitation, since it allows the fabrication of metal oxide nanoparticles with high production yield and low manufacture costs. However, to our knowledge, to date such fabrication method has not been upgraded for biomedical purposes. Herein, SPIONs have been fabricated by FSP and their surface

Long term biotransformation and toxicity of dimercaptosuccinic acid-coated magnetic nanoparticles support their use in biomedical applications.

Although iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) have been proposed for numerous biomedical applications, little is known about their biotransformation and long-term toxicity in the body. Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA)-coated magnetic nanoparticles have been proven efficient for in vivo drug delivery, but these results must nonetheless be sustained by comprehensive studies of long-term distribution, degradation and toxicity. We studied DMSA-coated magnetic nanoparticle effects in vitro on NCTC 1469 non-parenchymal hepatocytes, and analyzed their biodistribution and biotransformation in vivo in

Shape-Dependent Locomotion of DNA-Linked Magnetic Nanoparticle Films.

The shape-dependent aero- and hydro-dynamics found in nature have been adopted in a wide range of areas spanning from daily transportation to forefront biomedical research. Here, we report DNA-linked nanoparticle films exhibiting shape-dependent magnetic locomotion, controlled by DNA sequences. Fabricated through a DNA-directed layer-by-layer assembly of iron oxide and gold nanoparticles, the multifunctional films exhibit rotational and translational motions under magnetic fields, along with reversible shape morphing via DNA strand exchange reactions. Notably, the shape of the film significant

Core-shell polygalacturonate magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles: Synthesis, characterization, and functionalities.

This work aims to synthesize polygalacturonate-based magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (INP-polyGalA). The synthesis consists of the diffusion of both Fe2+ and Fe3+ at a molar ratio of 1:2 through polyGalA solution followed by the addition of an alkaline solution. To form individual nanoparticle materials, the polyGalA concentration needs to be below its overlapping concentration (C*). The synthesized materials (INP-polyGalA) contain about 45% of organic compound (polyGalA), and they have an average particle size ranging from 10 to 50 nm as estimated by several techniques (DLS, TEM and AFM) an

Carbon disulfide mediated self-assembly of Laccase and iron oxide nanoparticles on gold surfaces for biosensing applications.

A simple one-step methodology was explored to prepare enzyme-modified nanostructured electrodes for the development of biosensing interfaces. Magnetite type nanoparticles conjugated with Laccase were immobilized on gold surfaces. This approach relies on the reaction between carbon disulfide and amine groups of biomolecules to form dithiocarbamate (DTC) moieties, as well as on the strong affinity between sulfur species and metals. Special emphasis was given to demonstrate DTC formation in aqueous solution and further attachment to iron oxide nanoparticles and to gold electrodes. UV-visible spec

Trehalose-Functionalized Magnetic Affinity Probe Provides Biochemical Evidence of Nanoparticle Internalization in Mycobacteria.

We developed a magnetic affinity probe (MAP), consisting of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) functionalized with a photoaffinity labeling agent perfluorophenyl azide (PFPA), to characterize the internalization of nanoparticles by Mycobacterium smegmatis. Two MAPs were synthesized: a trehalose-functionalized MAP, PFPA-MNP-Tre, and an ethanol-functionalized MAP, PFPA-MNP-OH. Following incubation of MAP with bacteria, the samples were irradiated to trigger covalent bond formation between PFPA and bacterial proteins. The captured proteins were isolated by cleaving the disulfide bond in the

The surface coating of iron oxide nanoparticles drives their intracellular trafficking and degradation in endolysosomes differently depending on the cell type.

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) are potential theranostic tools that are biodegraded through different endocytic pathways. However, little is known about the endolysosomal network through which MNPs transit and the influence of the surface coating in this process. Here, we studied the intracellular transit of two MNPs with identical iron oxide core size but with two distinct coatings: 3-aminopropyl-trietoxysilane (APS) and dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA). Using endolysosomal markers and a high throughput analysis of the associated proteome, we tracked the MNPs intracellularly in two different mou

A guide to the design of magnetic particle imaging tracers for biomedical applications.

Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) is a novel and emerging non-invasive technique that promises to deliver high quality images, no radiation, high depth penetration and nearly no background from tissues. Signal intensity and spatial resolution in MPI are heavily dependent on the properties of tracers. Hence the selection of these nanoparticles for various applications in MPI must be carefully considered to achieve optimum results. In this review, we will provide an overview of the principle of MPI and the key criteria that are required for tracers in order to generate the best signals. Nanopartic
