A Preliminary Study of the Response of Microcyclosporella mali to Selected Essential Oils.

In Poland, the main causal agent of sooty blotch and flyspeck disease is the fungus Microcyclosporella mali J.Frank, Schroers et Crous, which is most commonly isolated from the spots found on apples. The aim of the paper was to study the effects of essential oils extracted from Greek oregano, thyme and costmary on M. mali. Analysis of the essential oils was conducted using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with a flame ionization detector (FID). The Greek oregano essential oil was classified to the carvacrol chemotype, while the thyme and costmary were classified to the thymol and t

Orthopoxvirus Seroprevalence and Infection Susceptibility in France, Bolivia, Laos, and Mali.

To determine a demographic overview of orthopoxvirus seroprevalence, we tested blood samples collected during 2003-2019 from France (n = 4,876), Bolivia (n = 601), Laos (n = 657), and Mali (n = 255) for neutralizing antibodies against vaccinia virus. In addition, we tested 4,448 of the 4,876 samples from France for neutralizing antibodies against cowpox virus. We confirmed extensive cross-immunity between the 2 viruses. Seroprevalence of antibodies was <1% in Bolivia, <5% in Laos, and 17.25% in Mali. In France, we found low prevalence of neutralizing antibodies in persons who were unvaccinated

Monitoring of the Sensitivity In Vivo of Plasmodium falciparum to Artemether-Lumefantrine in Mali.

In Mali, since 2007, artemether-lumefantrine has been the first choice against uncomplicated malaria. Despite its effectiveness, a rapid selection of markers of resistance to partner drugs has been documented. This work evaluated the treatment according to the World Health Organization's standard 28-day treatment method. The primary endpoint was the clinical and parasitological response corrected by a polymerase chain reaction. It was more than 99.9 percent, the proportion of patients with anemia significantly decrease compared to baseline (p < 0.001), and no serious events were recorded. Plas

Fleas and trypanosomes of peridomestic small mammals in sub-Saharan Mali.

BACKGROUND: Fleas are obligate blood-feeding ectoparasites and vectors of several bacterial zoonotic pathogens as well as trypanosomes that parasitize rodents and other small mammals. During investigations of tick- and rodent-borne diseases in Mali, West Africa, we included fleas and rodent-borne trypanosomes, both of which are poorly known in this country, but are attracting greater public health interest. METHODS: Small mammals were captured in 20 Malian villages from December 2007 to October 2011. Fleas were collected and identified to species, and thin blood smears were prepared, stained

Medicinal Plants Used in Mali for the Treatment of Malaria and Liver Diseases.

Today, ethno-pharmacology is a very important resource in order to discover new therapies for the current diseases. Moreover, another good justification for the ethno-pharmacological approach is to obtain new, effective, less expensive and simple therapies, limiting at the same time the cost of pharmaceutical research. Two major anti-malarial drugs widely used today, i.e. quinine and artemisinin, came respectively from Peruvian and Chinese ancestral treatments reported in the traditional medicines. In this contest, there is an urgent need for the discovery of new drugs, due to the critical epi

[Reference values of neonatal erythrocyte and leukocyte count in Bamako, Mali].

Reference values for blood cell count are not established at birth in Mali. This study aimed to determine reference values for erythrocyte and leukocyte at birth in Bamako. Blood was collected from the umbilical cord immediately following its clamping and studied for complete blood cell count in 481 newborns with a birth weight > 2500g, Apgar score ≤ 7 at 5 or 10 minutes, without abnormal hemoglobin mutations and whose mothers were willing in Bamako, Mali. Other than the median and mean values, 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles were calculated. The findings suggest that the normal reference values foll

The causes of hospital admission and death among children in Bamako, Mali.

The health burden and mortality caused by infections during childhood remain large in sub-Saharan Africa. We performed a review of the causes of hospitalization and death among children admitted to a pediatric teaching hospital in Bamako, Mali. Medical records of children admitted throughout 2000 were systematically sampled and abstracted for demographics, diagnosis, hospital course, and disposition. A sample of 1644 charts, from 5001 admitted children, were abstracted. The median age was 8 months. Half of the children had a febrile illness. All diagnoses were made clinically. The annual incid

Evaluation of case management in the integrated schistosomiasis-control programme in Mali.

Currently, schistosomiasis control in Mali is mainly based on treatment with praziquantel (PZQ). The policy is to ensure (1). the treatment, every 3 years, of school-age children in all areas where the prevalence of haematuria (an indicator of Schistosoma haematobium infection) in this age-group is >30%, and (2). the sound management of all patients presenting with haematuria or (bloody) diarrhoea (an indicator of S. mansoni infection) at health centres. In the present study, the application of case management was evaluated by visiting 60 healthcare facilities in four geographical areas and in

[Predictive value of consultation reasons in the diagnosis of leprosy in Bamako (Mali)].

INTRODUCTION: One of the weak points in the strategy for eliminating leprosy is the poor quality of screening. To overcome this, the World Health Organization (WHO) encourages endemic countries to run campaigns for the elimination of leprosy by circulating educational messages and mobilizing the medical community for early screening of cases. The aim of our study was to identify the motives for consultation with high predictive value for the diagnosis of leprosy and to determine the late diagnosis factors and hence assist the staff on site to improve the results of their leprosy elimination ca

[Angiofibroma of the nasal fossae: apropos of 12 cases observed in Mali].

Over a period of 2 years, 12 cases of angiofibroma of the nasal fossae were observed in an otorhinolaryngology department in Bamako. The classical female sex bias attributed to this disorder which involved patients under 40 years of age in 10 cases was not found. Also in contrast with usual observations, the lesion was located in the septum in only one third of cases. In all cases management was performed on an outpatient basis and diagnosis was confirmed by histology. All patients underwent excision of polyps by the endonasal route under local anesthesia. In 2 patients with septal angiomas, e

Preliminary observations on helminth parasite populations of the dromedary in northern Mali.

An abattoir survey on gastrointestinal parasites of the dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) was carried out in March/April 1987 in northern Mali. Parasitological examination of the digestive tract contents of 11 dromedaries revealed that Haemonchus longistipes was the predominant parasite with a prevalence as high as 85.7%. The genera Impalaia, Trichostrongylus, Cooperia, and Oesophagostomum were also recovered, but with a lower level of infection and frequency. The larval stage of the canine cestode Echinococcus granulosus was recorded in a single instance.

Infant feeding in Mali, West Africa: variations in belief and practice.

Research conducted in Mali during 1982 and 1983 reveals a wide range of variation in both the growth and development of infants and infant feeding practices. Overall, growth patterns of the Malian children (N = 136) are similar to those reported for children in other West African urban or rural poor populations. However, the use of the averages of growth measures disguises the fact that some children are severely malnourished, while others are growing at or above the 50th percentile of NCHS standards. Socio-economic status, as an indicator of the family's financial ability to provide food and

Maintaining zebu Maure cattle in a tsetse infested area of Mali.

A study was initiated to evaluate two trypanocidal drugs, the prophylactic isometamidium chloride (Trypamidium) and the curative diminazene aceturate (Berenil) as to their potential for long-term maintenance of zebu cattle in a tsetse infested area of Mali. Trypamidium was administered quarterly and Berenil was administered only as animals were found to be positive for trypanosomes. During the 21-month study trypanosomiasis was the most frequently encountered disease in the cattle in the Berenil treatment group with an average of 5.5 reinfections. The predominant trypanosome species encountere

Prevalence of ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolated from blood cultures in Mali.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae is becoming a serious public health concern. This study sought to determine ESBL frequency in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from patients' blood cultures in two university teaching hospitals of Bamako, Mali. METHODOLOGY: During a three-month period, the presence of Enterobacteriaceae from blood cultures of patients admitted to the university teaching hospitals of Bamako was evaluated. The microbial identifications were initially performed with an API 20E gallery and VITEK2 locally in M

Ethnobotanical study of plants used against malaria in Sélingué subdistrict, Mali.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Plants have contributed to food security and disease treatments to rural populations in sub Saharan Africa for many centuries. These plants occupy a significant place in the treatment of diseases, such as malaria. In Mali, malaria is the leading cause of medical consultation and death. This infection is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and children under 5 years. The general aim of this research was to collect data on the knowledge of traditional health practitioners on malaria in the Sélingué area; particularly to document how traditional healers conce
